Look for more toys from the films, as well as a special line focusing on the Clone Wars. But a pair of figures that were not shown but were announced are two different Imperial Dignitaries. Each figure will be unique, but they will "share parts." Presumably this means they will have bases that interact. Stay tuned for more from Pawtucket....

Pair Programming

Pair Programming 10/29/2003 12:12 AM

I've spent a few hours over the last two days pair programming with Adrian. We're working on a pretty huge project at the moment, and we've just started work on the coding phase, overlapping the design phase. I had tried pair programming a few times before with some success, but this time in particular the benefits of the approach were crystal clear. In total, we've defined 4 database tables, a number of functions and a simple class. Working separately we would almost certainly have created more lines of code. However...

  • The code we have produced is free of bugs. That's a pretty bold claim to make, but every line has been extensively discussed, tested and looked over by two pairs of eyes.
  • The naming conventions for both the Python code and the SQL are consistent and well thought out. We're both happy with them, we both understand why the names have been chosen and we both know the naming style well enough to continue it throughout the project.
  • The coding style itself is ultra-clean and approved by both of us. We have a preference now for everything from quoting styles to whether or not a docstring should finish in a full-stop (it shouldn't). We also know enough to keep these standards going for the rest of the project.
  • We learnt stuff from each other. KDE shortcuts, new features in Python 2.3, neat ways of laying out SQL statements, Python functional programming idioms.
  • We started coding, or at least started discussing the code, at the time we had scheduled for the start. There was no procrastination.
  • At no point did either of us check our email or check any blogs. productivity++!
  • We both know the code that we have written inside out and back to front.

Altogether they have been highly productive and successful sessions. Our plan now is to pair program the system core, then work separately on the additional modules that don't have major dependencies on each other. There are only two of us developers working on the project so pair programming the whole thing isn't really practical, but the benefits of working together the core modules are obvious.

One last thing: it was a lot of fun!

How I use FeedDemon to Receive Podcasts

How I use FeedDemon to Receive Podcasts 03/24/2005 06:17 PM

A couple of months ago I posted about how I use FeedDemon, and since it was a fairly popular post I thought I'd share with you how I use FeedDemon 1.5 to receive podcasts and sync them with my iPod.

In his article Payloads for RSS, Dave Winer talked about how RSS enclosures were intended to be downloaded while your computer is inactive (such as in the middle of the night). FeedDemon certainly supports this idea by enabling you to schedule your downloads, but I have to confess that I rarely use this feature anymore. I download only a handful of new podcasts every day, so I just let each download start right away. And although FeedDemon enables you to automatically download enclosures for specific feeds, I seldom use this feature since there aren't many feeds whose podcasts I always want to hear (in fact, I believe I only have automatic downloads enabled for my IT Conversations feed).

Instead, when there's a podcast I might want to listen to, I simply cick the enclosure icon to add it to my FeedStation download queue. I also make use of the fact that I can drag-and-drop a media link onto FeedStation to add it to the download queue. Chances are that most FeedDemon users don't know about that feature, but it's extremely handy - I regularly find myself drag-and-dropping MP3 links from Firefox onto FeedStation (note that this works from IE as well).

I generally add podcasts to my download queue throughout the day, and I have FeedDemon configured to automatically copy the downloaded podcasts to my iPod (although in the past I used this feature to copy downloads to my Creative Nomad as well). I then take my iPod with me the next morning, so that I can listen to the new podcasts after I drop off my kids at school.

Run Around NYC So You Might Have The
Chance To Buy A Pair Of Sneakers?
05/12/2004 05:24 AM
While it doesn't sound quite as fun as PacManhattan, Nike seems to be getting into the spirit of real world/wireless games by coming up with an advertising campaign that will send SMS text messages to mobile phones telling them where they can find a particular poster. When they arrive at the post, they're told to submit the special code on the poster back to Nike. Players get points for both the number of posters they find and the speed with which they get to them. If they "win" they get a chance to "pre-buy" a pair of new Nike sneakers. Winners get the chance to buy something? Doesn't seem like much of a win to me, but maybe I'm just holding out for those smarter sneakers. Also, to be honest, this game doesn't sound like much fun. It sounds sort of like a mobile version of "fetch." They tell you where to go, you go, and you retrieve a code and send it back to them. Where's the challenge?
