Internet Voting: The Modern Poll Tax?

Internet Voting: The Modern Poll Tax? 01/19/2004 01:44 AM
An interesting question is being raised as we get closer and closer to offering some kind of internet voting mechanism. Does internet voting unfairly benefit those on the "have" side of the digital divide? If so, how can you ever offer internet voting, when it's always going to be easier for some people than others? I think the argument may be going too far. Already, there are some people who have cars and some who don't. Those without are going to have more difficulty getting to a polling place, but people don't complain about that. Even in cases where everyone does have a car - some are nearer than others to a polling place. You can't necessarily guarantee completely equal simplicity in getting to a polling place. The issue shouldn't be one of making it equally difficult for everyone to vote - but making it as easy as possible for everyone to vote.

AP - The Pentagon is standing by an Internet voting system it developed for U.S. citizens overseas despite an independent analysis that said it was so vulnerable to attacks that it should be scrapped.

Internet Voting System Fundamentally
Flawed
01/22/2004 03:07 AM
A new internet voting system designed to let overseas US military personnel cast their absentee ballots online was heavily criticized in a report today, suggesting that it's nowhere near secure, and nothing can be done to make it secure, until some fundamental aspects of the internet are changed. The report describes a number of fairly basic ways that the system could be attacked, and the integrity of votes could be jeopardized. The folks backing the system brushed off the criticism by saying, more or less, "thanks, but we don't care - we've got other experts who say it's just dandy, and we'll pick the experts we like better." Of course, when it comes to security, it's nice when you can make your critics happy too. You don't really have the option of just picking the folks who support what you'd like to believe.

Voting for George W. Bush is like

In Oaxaca, as in most of the places that I've visited in and out of the U.S., it was nearly impossible to find someone who admits to favoring George W. Bush.  Yet the guy won 51% of the popular vote.  Even here in Massachusetts fully 37 percent of voters supposedly chose Bush.  Perhaps voting for Bush is like being a consumer of online porn.  Statistics show that it is popular but nobody will admit to doing it.
