This is
god-damn gorgeous. The KT401 Tape Timer is an aluminum kitchen timer.
If you can't figure out how to use it, that's between you and your
case worker. The site Kikkerland is only offering them in sets of six,
but I bet you could find them elsewhere.

Hits of backwards masking
Hits of backwards masking
03/25/2005 11:22 AMDavid Pescovitz:
An
article
this week in the Salt Lake Tribune about backwards masking in rock
music linked to Jeff Millner's classic "Stairway to Heaven: Backwards"
site. Jeff has added a few more recent tunes to the satanic jukebox of
sin, including Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time":
Play forward: "With you I lose my mind give me a
si..."
Reverse play: "Sleep with me, I'm not too young."
and the devious "Pokemon Rap":
Play forward: "Gotta catch 'em all, gotta catch 'em all
(yo), Gotta catch 'em all, gotta catch 'em all (yeah)"
Reverse play: "I love satan, I love satan. I love satan, I love
satan."
My all-time favorite though is Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust."
As kids, MTV.com writer
Gil Kaufman and I played the song backwards for my
dad to prove that the rumors were true about a hidden suggestion to
"smoke marijuana." My dad shrugged and said he thought is sounded more
like "go to California."

LA Times online unclenches from
paid-subscriber-only silliness
07/30/2004 02:11 PMIn recent months, the
Los Angeles Times has taken a hell of a
lot of heat from bloggers, media critics, and even some of its own
writers over a constipated web content management policy that locked
up all "Calendar" section listings to paid subscribers only.
They've finally reversed that policy. This is groovy, because links
just want to be free, man. Link
Update: A number of BB readers who are
non-LAT-subscribers have written in to say that the "unclenched"
content is "re-clenched," and that they can't access without paid
subscription. Others have written in to say that registration, but not
paid subscription, is still required. This could be a temporary tech
glitch, but I'm still confused, and so are the rest of the LAT's
online readers, so AFAIK it's still broken. Why do some publications
insist on getting in the way of readers who just want to read basic
content like this? I'll be looking for that new Koreatown
barbecue/karaoke hotspot on their mercifully reg- and sub-free
competitor LA.com.

Sharp's Kitchen Composters
Sharp's Kitchen Composters
09/13/2004 02:15 PM
Sharp has announced a pair of kitchen composters,
the NP-40CX-S and the NP-20CX-S, both of which use a special microbe
blend to reduce the volume of organic waste by up to 92% in just 24
hours. There's not much difference between the two units beyond
capacity (and wheels, I guess), and Sharp claims that the "Composting
Bio Mix" will only have need to be replaced about twice a year.
I don't know if Sharp plans to release these units outside of
Japan, but I would love to play around with one if they do. It would
be especially nifty if you could use the rendered waste as mulch or
something like that. Until then, I guess we'll just have to do it the
New York way - letting our plants die and then buying some more.

Two geek in the kitchen stories
Two geek in the kitchen stories
09/14/2004 12:46 PMOne of my first tasks last night was prepping the shrimp for a dish we
do called "Javanese Fried Rice." Around the kitchen though, everyone
refers to it as, "Javi." I mixed the shrimp in the marinade, and then
Ben told me to cover it, label it, and put it in the walk-in. With my
black marker I wrote, "Java Shrimp, 9/13."
Later in the evening, as dessert orders were coming in, a ticket
printed out that said:
Single scoop!Toffee chips
Erin grabbed the toffee chips off the shelf and handed them to me to
put on the scoop of vanilla ice cream. It took me more than a moment
to realize that what I'd read wasn't "bang Toffee chips" (geek speak
for "no toffee chips") but rather a request to add toffee chips to a
dish that didn't usually come with them.
I have a lot to learn. Or maybe it's unlearn.

How to rip from vinyl or tape
09/15/2004 11:44 AMSo, you have five hundred tapes and albums of the Beatles, Led
Zeppelin, and the like, and want then on your computer? Well, you
could spend hundreds of dollars replacing music you already paid for
once with CDs. Or, instead of paying twenty bucks per album, you could
spend twenty cents per album to convert your tapes and vinyl to CD and
rip those. Read more for how. Also, the instructions below will
allow you to defeat any copy protection. Period. Just substitute
"cheap CD walkman" for "stereo." Caution- doing this in the United
Statesor other parts of the world may be a felony. Those in less
corrupt, more civilized parts of the world need not fear. Or
alternately, you can make CDs of your own band.
