CMP Blocks Google News Because Their
Lawyers Want Fewer Visitors

CMP Blocks Google News Because Their
Lawyers Want Fewer Visitors
06/24/2004 06:03 PM
Sometimes it's worth repeating the mantra that lawyers understand the law, and not business. Just because a lawyer tells your business it can do something, it doesn't necessarily make sense to actually do it. It makes absolutely no sense, for instance, that CMP has apparently decided to ban all incoming links from Google News, just because they excerpt a couple sentences (and maybe an image). They are actively turning away traffic, and this is a business that is based on advertising. Perhaps this is just a mistake, but if it's not, it's a stupid policy that is going to cost CMP plenty of visitors (read: ad revenue) because some lawyers made a bad decision. Do they really think this will somehow bring them more visitors who will go to their front page instead? It won't. It will bring them many fewer visitors, because they've just cut off their most directed channel of traffic.

For the 5th time in three years, Chinese ISP proxy servers are caching the web and leaving the cache open on third level wildcard subdomains. Over the last few years many sites have started banning Chinese visitors for this reason. The latest round is the first time exposure to the phenomena by many green webmasters.

China Blocks Wikipedia

China Blocks Wikipedia 06/14/2004 11:50 AM
The Chinese internet censors are at it again. While past articles looking at China's often complet ely arbitrary internet censorship policies, it looks like the Chinese government is fed up with the idea that politically neutral content might be available online. They've now start blocking Wikipedia, the popular community-built online encyclopedia that is careful to enforce a policy that entries remain politically neutral. In fact, prior to this, the article claims that the Chinese Wikipedia site was used as an example of internet openness in China. Not any more.

China Blocks Keyword Search, Denies All

China Blocks Keyword Search, Denies All 09/14/2002 10:11 PM
New Scientist: Google keywords knock Chinese surfers offline. "If you enter one of these keywords, such as the Chinese president's name, you loose all IP connectivity for five minutes," said Ben Edelman. "I suspect they may have had this system in the wings all along." (Thanks, S. Anand!) NYTimes: China Seems to Refine Bid to Restrict Web Access. "Users searching for information on Falun Gong, the outlawed spiritual movement, turned up many references through Google. But exploring those references proved impossible, and users' Internet browsers often ceased to operate properly once an unauthorized reference had been clicked on." According to the New Scientist, "the Chinese government refutes denying access to Google and has suggested that surfers could be suffering normal network problems." "It is quite normal with some internet sites that sometimes you can access them, and sometimes you can't," says an official from the Chinese government's information department. "The ministry has received no information about Google being blocked, and we have received no information about a block being lifted."...
