11/18/2003 01:23 AM A new policy set in place by the administration of
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva aims to move its systems
from expensive Microsoft
products to a Linux -based
platform in order to cut computer costs. Sergio Amadeu, head of
Brazil's National Information
Technology Institute , also hopes that the move to open source
will help ease the digital divide in his country:
[He] argues that the gap between the needy and
the wealthy will only deepen unless the poor have easy access to the
technology that the rich have at their fingertips, especially in
developing countries like Brazil.
IBM has entered into an agreement with the Brazilian government
to explore the move to open source.

Schtoom is a open source VoIP project in Python. This could
be huge!
Vercotti: (Michael Palin) Well,
I had been running a successful escort agency - high class, no really,
high class girls... we didn't have any of that . That was right out.
And I decided. (phone rings on desk) Excuse me. (he answers it)
Hello... no, not now... shtoom... shtoom... right... yes we'll have
the watch ready for you at midnight... the watch... the
Chinese watch... yes, right oh, bye bye... Mother.
Shtoom is a open-source, cross-platform VoIP softphone, implemented
in Python. As well as the basic phone, the package also includes a
number of other applications -
- shtoom - the end-user phone
- shtam - a simple answering machine/voicemail application
- shmessage - an announcement server
Shtoom should work on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. It ships with
user interfaces for Qt/KDE, Gtk/GNOME, Tk and a command line. There
will hopefully be native user interfaces for Windows and the Mac soon,
until then, the Tk interface works on those platforms.
Shtoom has audio support on Linux using OSS or ALSA, and on all
other platforms using the PortAudio library. Native sound drivers for
Mac/Windows are planned (the Mac interface should be done soon --
volunteers to help with an interface from Python to Windows
DirectSound libraries are more than welcome!)
Shtoom requires Python
2.3.3 and Twisted
1.1.1 or greater.
Availability:
Shtoom 0.2 is now available. You can get it from the Sourceforge Fil
es page. Or, for the brave, you can get source via subversion. Anonymous
checkouts should get svn://divmod.org/svn/S
htoom/trunk/shtoom, while folks with developer access should
use svn+ssh://divmod.o
rg/svn/Shtoom/trunk/shtoom.

Face Value: Hedy Lamarr's Ready for Her
Close-Up
05/03/2004 06:04 PMLegendary beauty Hedy Lamarr invented frequency hopping; a film may
show her intellectual side: Lamarr and George Antheil developed many
of the fundamental ideas for frequency hopping spread-spectrum
technology that is the foundation of much of modern data and voice
wireless communication. Their patents were kept secret until 1985,
delaying recognition. A foundation is helping to fund "Face Value," a
screenplay about these broader aspects of Lamarr's life beyond her
screen talent. Lamarr received a Pioneer Award in 1997 from the
Electronic Frontier Foundation while Antheil was recognized
posthumously. The Associated Press reported that the actress, then in
her mid-80s, said on learning of the award, "It's about time." Her son
apparently traveled to accept on her behalf; she died in 2000. In an
uncredited article about her written around 1997, this prescient quote
appears: "I should probably sell my life story to Ted Turner," says
the film goddess-inventor-patriot, "because it's unbelievable.". Dave
Hughes successfully lobbied for Antheil and Lamarr's nomination for
that Pioneer Award. He is a technical adviser for the screenplay about
her life. (Hughes himself will receive West Point's Distinguished
Graduate award in late May, a signal honor by his alma mater. And
someone should, in fact, schedule a movie to be made about his life,
too.)...

09/06/2004 12:50 PMCyberTAN is one of the largest SOHO networking manufacturers in
Taiwan. Chih-Kan Wang, vice president of the company’s Digital Home
and Advanced Technology Center, shared his thoughts on the company’s
status and future business prospects with DigiTimes. The company
currently has four business units, including two older units that made
up the company’s original core. These comprise the router business
unit, which produces broadband routers, access points and other CPE
(customer premise equipment) items, and the wireless client unit,
producing PCMCIA cards, mini-PCI cards and USB dongles.
CyberTAN has since created two new units: the Digital Home unit, which
so far has been producing wireless modules for digital television and
wireless DVD players but will soon add several more products to the
line-up, and the Telecom unit, which produces ADSL routers, IADs
(integrated access devices) and VoIP devices. CyberTAN’s primary focus
is on the SOHO market, said Wang.
Wang also explained that CyberTAN is having difficulty filling
positions in its research and development departments since the
company is continuously expanding its requirements for all these four
areas.

My
March
21 entry about upcoming.org turned out to be an odd juxtaposition
because, on the same day, a new events database called
EVDB was announced and shown at PC
Forum. It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so

others:

The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style,
Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds
promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public.

04/05/2005 11:50 AM IBM Adopts
Open Development Internally: "Following on the success of its
Eclipse open-source development platform, IBM has quietly been using a
form of open-source development internally to create technology the
company will sell commercially.
IBM calls its model Community Source, which it defines as a
collaborative, internal, open-source-style environment for developing
and testing new technology.
Danny Sabbah, vice president of strategy and technology for the IBM
Software Group, in Armonk, N.Y., said IBM is using its Community
Source model across 100 projects and 2,000 developers in the company.
These projects span the IBM Software Group, Systems Group, Research
and Global Services, he said."
Very interesting. I'd like to learn more about that. What parts of the
so called open source development process have they built into the
Community Source model? I've found that most developers have different
definitions of the open source development process (via
