the offer by about $450 million – or $26 per share versus $24.50 in
its first offer. To date, Verizon has not changed its offer, which
still stands at $6.7 million or $20.75 per share.
Infoworld: Reviewing Open Source CMS
Infoworld: Reviewing Open Source CMS
01/15/2003 11:50 AMOpen-source CMSes (content management systems)—such as PHP-Nuke
(www.phpnuke.org), eZ Publish (www.ez.no) and Bricolage
(www.bricolage.cc)—provide a compelling third option, one that can be
flexible and relatively inexpensive without requiring companies to
build their own CMS from the ground up.
Of course, an open-source CMS solution can present its own challenges.
As we've seen before with open-source software, the flip side of great
flexibility is often challenging complexity. While it's true that open
source enables companies to cross off licensing-fee line items from
their project budgets, a portion of these savings must be redirected
to development expertise, be it outsourced or in-house.

Reviewing the Yahoo 360 launch, after
the fact
04/02/2005 07:28 AM
Th
e launch of Yahoo 360 seems so long ago, but it was just six days.
How did it go? This screed nails it.
Invite-only, exclusive, two-tier marketing of beta services, a
tradition started by Google (as far as anyone knows) don't work. It
only worked for Gmail because there was great anticipation, the idea
was new (the method of marketing, that is), and you could use Gmail to
communicate with people who didn't use Gmail.
Everything about Yahoo 360
is for members only, and in the first few hours of its life in the
blogosphere, most people couldn't get in. Now, after it's
launched, there's no way to see anything other than a ghost town.
Maybe that's all there is, maybe not. But for a service like this, the
appearance of being a ghost town is just as bad as actually being one.
All this fuss for a service that most people thought was a poor
cousin to Flickr that Yahoo bought just before rolling out 360.
It's a disaster epic on the scale of The Towering Inferno
or The Poseidon
Adventure. They did everything wrong, and worked really hard at
it.
Moral of the story, big companies don't have
mojo, they can't, and it's not fair to make that the issue. They can,
however, make the trains run on time, and at that Yahoo does quite
well. But they should leave the innovation to small, nimble, motivated
devteams with nothing to lose and no corporate hierarchy to please.
Hire a business school prof to do a case study for you. It's never
worked differently in Silicon Valley, yet this is a lesson Silicon
Valley keeps relearning. The next revolution isn't on stage at
Esther's or SXSW or even Etech -- those were the last
revolutions.

Motorola A845 High-Speed Handset

Motitopia's Russell Beattie just spent a week with
Motorola's A845, one of the first two phones to support AT&T
Wireless's high-speed 3G wireless service (UMTS/WCDMA), and posted a
really interesting article about his experience, somewhere between
product review and reflection on the strengths and shortcomings on
modern day phone OSes, push email, wireless broadband, and the future
of useful handsets. Or at least I think that's what it's about. There
isn't a single picture.

Rumor: Nextel Working With Motorola on
"Service Master" Bluetooth Phone
Rumor: Nextel Working With Motorola on
"Service Master" Bluetooth Phone
08/20/2004 06:20 AMOne of our more reliable tipsters had this little nugget to drop.
Take it for what it's worth:
I was talking to guy in a
waiting room while we were both getting our cars serviced. Turns out
he is some sort of higher up corporate level Nextel employee and he's
impressed that my dad's business is on Nextel.
So I said to the guy, "When are you gonna finally get on the
Bluetooth bandwagon?"
He told me they have a Bluetooth phone in the pipeline they are
calling the "Service Master" that they developed with Motorola
(surprise). Basically he said the only reason they are coming out with
it is that Stanley Steamer, ChemLawn, and a few other companies
comprising some 30,000 accounts demanded the bluetooth technology from
Nextel and that's a big chunk of their business so they decided to
keep them happy.
He didn't give a time frame for the release of the phone but
indicated that the named businesses would be the first to get
them.
Sprint, Nextel to Merge
Sprint, Nextel to Merge
12/19/2004 03:18 PM Sprint and Nextel announced their $40 billion merger of equals:
Sprint's CDMA technology has been a block to offer push-to-talk (PTT)
services that Nextel has made great profits on. Nextel has no
migration plan for next-generation data services, although they've
been testing approaches that aren't integrated with their iDEN voice
technology. Sprint has already committed to spending billions on 3G
high-speed voice and data systems. In seemingly unrelated news a few
days ago, Cingular dropped its challenge to the FCC proposal that
would allow Nextel to reorganize its scattered chunks of frequency,
giving them new contiguous spectrum in exchange for paying for the
cost of moving the public-safety incumbents to Nextel-vacated
frequencies. It's a multi-billion-dollar deal that the FCC offered,
and Verizon Wireless and Cingular Wireless now no longer oppose it,
and one would expect Sprint and Nextel to accept the deal, although
Nextel wants to pay substantially less. The new Sprint Nextel is at a
rough parity with the subscriber base of Cingular-post-AT&T
Wireless acquisition and Verizon Wireless (all on their lonesome).
Sprint Nextel will have 35 million subscribers, Cingular 47 million,
and Verizon Wireless 42 million. T-Mobile becomes a distant fourth
(about 16 million subscribers) with no data upgrade plan in sight.
This didn't elude the Wall Street Journal, which filed this report in
which T-Mobile notes that worldwide they have about 70 million cell
phone users which allows them to compete on scale for handsets and
network components....
