Clié to get Wi-Fi Memory Stick 11/14/2003 01:48 PM

Hagiwara Sys-Com has developed a memory stick wireless LAN card for Sony Clié handhelds: The card only works on Cliés running Palm OS 5.0 or 5.1. Those Clies already have the option of using a compact flash Wi-Fi card but apparently people are lining up to get the stick--MobilePlanet is taking preorders to begin shipping product Dec. 1....

2gb_memorystick.jpg imageSony is finally getting around to releasing their 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo (High-Speed) cards. They announced these things back in September of 2004, and have kicked the release date back twice. The "(High-Speed)" in the name indicates the cards have a transfer rate of 80Mbps (10MB/sec), which is far more than you'll ever need for anything practical. Sony really needs to do something about this Memory Stick naming scheme, because it's getting to be like Street Fighter games. I needn't remind you this stick is PSP compatible.

I can't tell you how many people have flipped out when I recommended it to them, then backed off when they discovered it only has 128MB of memory built-in (although this KURO-SHOT has even less, at 64MB). I want to see the KEY020 that's half the size with 1GB of memory built-in.

Dial [fn] for Exposé

Dial [fn] for Exposé 12/11/2003 04:58 PM
I've just--on the advice of Mac-pal Duncan--remapped Exposé to the [fn] key instead of [f9]. This is just the next step in my logical progression towards an Exposé-driven life. I started out a "hider", hiding everything but the active app in an effort to reduce on-screen app clutter. Enter Exposé... I mapped all four screen corners to All Windows Exposé view. My multi-button optical mouse's thumb button does the same. And I've become pretty efficient at reaching across the keyboard to [f9] for action. Moving that to [fn] brings things closer to home (row).

My favourite hint on selecting apps with Exposé is to use the Exposé key or button both to spread app thumbnails across the desktop and to select the one I'm interested in rather than Exposé button > click, Exposé button > click.

Eclipse TD Lulét Mini Speaker
System
06/03/2004 10:20 AM

307_sub_img.jpg imageAlthough suggested to me as an iPod solution, there's absolutely nothing keeping you from using the Eclipse TD Lulét speaker systems for anything from home theater to gaming -- in fact, they're designed to be easily mountable anywhere, like most other small speakers. If you do want to use the Lulét system with an iPod or other portable player, though, the accompanying amplifier will make sure you've got enough wattage to push either the 2.1 (or the 5.1 system, although using that with a portable player might be a waste of 3 perfectly good channels). The 307 Lulét line isn't their only setup, either, if you're looking for something with a little more punch than mini-system gear. (Thanks, Tim!)

Sony Hi-MD Memory Card Reader

Sony Hi-MD Memory Card Reader 08/10/2004 09:26 PM

himd_memory imageSony makes an interesting attempt at pushing their new Hi-MD format (for "High Capacity MiniDisc"), which for those of you that don't know, has a 1 gigabyte capacity. It's called the "MCMD-R1," and for good reason. What reason that is, I do not know. The aptly named device, or whatever, attaches to a Hi-MD recorder via a USB cable. Pushing the "copy" button, images will be copied from a memory card to the Hi-MD disc. An interesting idea, but I personally find the numerous drawbacks to be...drawbacky. First of all, it apparently only does images. You can't connect even it to a PC's USB port - this makes the sub $80 device quite expensive. Also, the reader does support nearly every media under the sun, but it can only read from one card at a time.

If I were Sony, I'd instead make this into a CD drive. You could press the button, and it would copy the disc's contents onto a Hi-MD. But this is on the very fringes of legality as we know it. Oh well.

EDGE PC Card

Brian Jepson reviews the Sony Ericsson EDGE card to the nth degree, including configuration advice and photos: This in-depth, multi-page review at Jiwire (our content partner) tells the results of Brian's real-world testing of EDGE service over AT&T Wireless's network in several cities, provides an explanation of how EDGE works (and why performance might vary), and is fully illustrated with screen captures and photos. Brian also provides the information you need to use the card with Mac OS X and Linux, which aren't directly supported by Sony Ericsson. A small download, a few code changes, recompile, and voila! You've got high-speed cell data on unsupported computers. While $80 a month may seem high for a consumer-level price, for business people who need ubiquitous data access, EDGE is really the fastest best option when it works. By January 2005, Verizon Wireless will have its 1xEvDO in potentially dozens of cities, while AT&T Wireless should have debuted UMTS in four or five towns....
