The battle of 64-bit computer chips between chipmakers Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will be remarkably similar to the 32-bit chip wars of the past between the two, with Intel as the putative Goliath and AMD as David, gambling on knocking off the giant with a small but potentially lethal 64-bit slingshot.

How many privileges do you have on your
work computer?
05/25/2004 07:05 AM

Do you work for an organization which has such tight controls on what you can do with your PC that you almost have to ask permission to stick a disk into the machine. Some companies go overboard in locking down computers to completely the opposite where you can configure your system without restraint. What happens when Windows refuses to run a program because it requires administrative privileges. John Undell has a great right up on the trust we are given or have with our computer setups. Work-Life Balance Tilting Too Much
Towards Work

Work-Life Balance Tilting Too Much
Towards Work
11/14/2003 02:51 PM
One of the downsides to the fact that people can work whenever they want is that it's sometimes hard for people to stop working. According to a study done in Europe, many overly stressed out workers are asking their bosses to cut their hours and salary just to gain back some control over their lives. Meanwhile, many bosses in IT are increasingly worried that their staff is going to burn out. Of course, a lot of that could be solved if companies hired more people, but they still seem hesitant to do so.

When we see a headline about weapons of mass destruction, we immediately think of Islamic terrorists launching chemical, biological or nuclear weapons. But another type of weapon will become equally dangerous and much more available within the next decade: an artificially intelligent computer virus. Dan Ronco explores this emerging threat in PeaceMaker, his new scifi thriller, released August 1, 2004 by Winterwolf Publishing. Complimentary copies are available to qualified individuals. Is It Fair To Ban Computer Use For Those
Arrested For Computer Crimes?
12/04/2003 02:37 AM
It seems like it's pretty common for anyone arrested for any sort of computer related crime to be "banned" from using computers for a certain period of time. Now, however, some are questioning that ban because computers have become such a necessary part of life for so many people. Security Focus is running an article talking about the case of someone accused of hacking into numerous company networks and defacing some websites. While his trial has not occurred yet, he's been banned from using computers since he was indicted three years ago. His lawyer is now arguing that this violates his constitutional rights, saying that it goes to far in violating his right to free speech.
