Is It Fair To Ban Computer Use For Those
Arrested For Computer Crimes?
12/04/2003 02:37 AM
It seems like it's pretty common for anyone arrested for any sort of computer related crime to be "banned" from using computers for a certain period of time. Now, however, some are questioning that ban because computers have become such a necessary part of life for so many people. Security Focus is running an article talking about the case of someone accused of hacking into numerous company networks and defacing some websites. While his trial has not occurred yet, he's been banned from using computers since he was indicted three years ago. His lawyer is now arguing that this violates his constitutional rights, saying that it goes to far in violating his right to free speech.

Volunteers Needed Urgently: Help ALA
Stop the FCC's Unlawful

Volunteers Needed Urgently: Help ALA
Stop the FCC's Unlawful
03/19/2005 02:53 AM
"Many of you already know about ALA's involvement (with other library associations) in challenging the FCC's 'Broadcast Flag' rule, a rule that will prevent librarians from being able to distribute or make available copies of broadcast television programs on the internet. It will also require you to purchase new electronic equipment that your library now uses to read or manipulate digital television signals (such as DVD players, recorders, TiVos, appropriately equipped computers, etc.) if that equipment is not Flag-compliant and your library does not already own a digital TV tuner.

We have filed an appeal to the federal Court of Appeals in Washington, DC, arguing that the FCC had no authority to promulgate the Broadcast Flag rule. The validity of the Broadcast Flag is now pending before that court.

This week, the court issued a very important order requiring us to submit evidence proving that we have 'standing' to sue the FCC. In order to provide the court with the evidence it needs--and to defeat the Broadcast Flag, which will sharply limit how libraries might be able to use broadcast materials, perhaps in ways we might not yet have even conceived--we need your help.

We are looking for members of our organization that might be willing to submit an affidavit explaining how the Broadcast Flag harms them. The process will be simple, straightforward, and not very time-consuming. The lawyers representing us in the case will assist in drafting the document; you'll just have to help provide the facts of what it will say.

If you can answer 'yes' to the following questions and would be willing to help us protect the First Amendment rights of librarians, and the rights we fought so hard to obtain in the TEACH Act, then please contact us as soon as possible:

  1. Are you a current member of the American Library Association?
    -and-

  2. Do you do any of the following?

    1. Archive television broadcasts for use by library patrons or other educational or research purposes?

    2. Use portions of television broadcasts in distance learning courses, or make broadcast portions available to teachers at your institution for this purpose?

    3. Make portions of television broadcasts available via your library's or your school's website for any educational, research, or
      commentary reasons?

    4. Record television broadcasts at your library for any other type of educational purpose?

    5. Have equipment that you use to archive, record, or manipulate copies of television broadcasts that you would replace if it no longer allowed you to archive, record, or manipulate the television broadcast in the same way you do today.

We look forward to hearing from you to help in this important issue!

For further information, go to http://www.ala.org/ala/washoff/WOissues/copyrightb /broadcastflag/broadcastflag.htm."

If you can help or if you can help your local library get involved (they may not understand the issues and you could educate them), please act now! These are incredibly important issues, not just for libraries, but for the average person, who the courts are apparently leaving out of the equation entirely.

The Local Installation Source Tool is a wizard to help manage your Local Installation Source (LIS) on computers running Microsoft Office 2003. The LIS Tool allows you to enable or disable LIS, and to move the MsoCache folder to a new volume. This download is intended for use by customers and network administrators with LIS issues who contact Microsoft Product Support Services. Local Installation Source is a Setup feature. When a user installs Microsoft Office 2003 from a CD or a compressed CD image on the network, Setup copies any required installation files to a hidden folder on the local computer. Microsoft Windows Installer uses this local installation source to install Office, and the local source remains available for repairing, reinstalling or updating Office later on. Users can install features on demand or run Setup in maintenance mode to add new features without their original media.

Cyber Yugoslavia

Cyber Yugoslavia 12/31/2003 06:11 PM

Check any current map, count all the countries there and you'll come up one short every time; Cyber Yugoslavia doesn't exist in the real world, yet, but according to its founders, is a real country nonetheless.

This is Cyber Yugoslavia. Home of Cyber Yugoslavs. We lost our country in 1991 and became citizens of Atlantis. Since  September 9, 1999 this is our home. We don't have a physical land, but we do have nationality, and we are giving  CY citizenships and CY passports. Because this is Atlantis, we are allowing double and triple citizenships. If you feel Yugoslav, you are welcome to apply for CY citizenship, regardless of your current nationality and citizenship, and you will be accepted. Please read our Constitution for the details. If you are just curious, you are welcome to visit us as tourists.

This land will grow as our citizens wish. Neither faster, nor slower. Neither more, nor less. So, this site will always be under construction. For a solid country to grow, even a virtual one, it takes some time.

When we have five million citizens, we plan to apply to the UN for member status. When this happens, we will ask 20 square meters of land anywhere on Earth to be our country. On this land, we'll keep our server.

Many who spend a lot of time online feel more connected to other people online than to their own family or neighbors, so there might be good reasons for someone to become a "citizen" of a cyber community. In today's Breakpoint Commentary. Chuck Colson says that virtual communities are severely lacking because...

...social networks based on shared interests, like the Internet, do not require us to think about more than ourselves. On the contrary, in cyberspace, it’s easy to forget that anyone else—any real people—really exists.

In the online world, there is no need to be neighborly, hospitable, or generous—not just because you can’t be held accountable, but because it is not possible. The “community” is not physically held together, and the mode of interaction precludes acts of meaningful self-denial. The practice of virtues like self-denial shapes character and builds friendships—friendships that, in turn, hold us morally accountable. It just can’t happen in cyberspace.

Interesting food for thought.

Gibson: Cyber-Claus

Gibson: Cyber-Claus 12/26/2004 04:44 PM
Xeni Jardin: On William Gibson's blog, a holiday-themed short which was originally published as "Cyber-Claus", in The Washington Post Book World in 1991. Snip:
In the night of 12/24/07, though sensors woven through the very fabric of the house had thus far registered a complete absence of sentient bio-activity, I found myself abruptly summoned from a rare, genuine and expensively induced examples of that most priceless of states, sleep.

Even as I hurriedly dressed, I knew that dozens of telepresent armed-response drones would already be sweeping in from the District, skimming mere inches above the chill surface of the Potomac. Vicious tri-lobed aeroforms that they were, they resembled nothing more than the Martian war machines of George Pal’s 1953 epic, “The War of the Worlds”.

And while, from somewhere far above, now, came that sound, that persistent clatter, as though gunships disgorged whole platoons of iron-shod mercenaries, I could only wonder: who? Was it my estranged wife, Lady Betty-Jayne Motel-6 Hyatt, Chief Eco-Trustee of the Free Duchy of Wyoming? Or was it Cleatus “Mainframe” Sinyard himself, President of the United States and Perpetual Chairman of the Concerned Smart People’s Northern Hemisphere CoProsperity Sphere?

Time To Take Down Some Cyber Criminals

Time To Take Down Some Cyber Criminals 06/08/2004 08:17 PM
Writer Bruce Sterling gave the keynote address at a security conference and said that it's time that law enforcement realized that online scams are no longer the result of bored teenagers, but the majority are for-pr ofit enterprises run by organized crime operations. He says that law enforcement still doesn't take online crime seriously enough, and that's letting these online criminals take over. His solution is to get prosecutors who will take down online criminals and make an example of them. In other words, someone needs to take charge and clean up cyberspace.
