08/16/2004 10:46 AM
Writer-director M Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, Signs) may face legal action over accusations that his latest project, The Village, was plagiarized from a children's book. The source in question: "Running Out of Time" by Margaret Peterson Haddix, published by Simon and Schuster in 1995. While the matter of plagiarism is open to debate, evidently the movie's suck factor is not. Last week, one blogger/culture crit pal was so distressed at the stinker he'd paid two digits to see in a Manhattan theater that he text-messaged me halfway through -- "OMG THIS IS THE WORST MOVIE EVER." He was not alone in this assessment. L ink (via MeFi, which includes a handy list of other films accused of plagiarism in recent years)

How Bad Is Plagiarism At Universities?

How Bad Is Plagiarism At Universities? 06/30/2004 09:07 PM
When you have students suing universities when caught plagiarizing you know that plagiarism isn't always frowned upon by students. However, despite the scary language used in this article, the numbers really don't seem that ridiculous. About twenty-five percent of students admit to plagiarizing at some point or another (though, the article describes this as "cheating his or her way through degrees"). Meanwhile, 97% say they know its cheating, but 17% still think it's okay anyway. Now, it's obviously cheating, but to be honest, these numbers don't see all that high or surprising. There are always going to be students who cheat at one point or another. While the article includes anecdotal stories about students who have copied material repeatedly, the study doesn't actually address how many students chronically cheat, and how many have just done it on occasion. I'm not defending those who do it, but the article uses language that would make you think that no one ever writes their own work any more, and the numbers in the study simply don't support that.

Getting Through College, Thanks To
Plagiarism

Getting Through College, Thanks To
Plagiarism
11/13/2003 05:25 AM
There have been plenty of stories about college kids cheating by buying or just cutting and pasting complete assignments for their classes, but this BBC piece includes a quote from someone claiming that she basically did that on every paper she's turned in throughout college, and is now using the same cut-and-paste method to finish up her dissertation. Clearly, that's an outlier example, but it does show how far people will go. The article includes lots of quotes from people who complain about the dumbing down of our education system that has allowed this to happen, but I'm not sure that's the case. Kids have always cheated in school. This just makes the process easier. Of course, what they don't mention is that the real punishment is already being handed out to these kids. They're attending (and in many cases paying quite a bit) four years of college and not learning a damn thing, because all they're doing is cutting and pasting.

Is plagiarism at universities out of control? Academic Plagiarism is a growing problem in the university world and is not just making headlines in the United States anymore. While some professors are morally opposed, the growing popularity of professors forcing students to submit works ahead of time to companies like Turnitin may be an indicator of of this growing problem. With more and more employers complaining about the writing skills of new hires, are we just cheating ourselves in the end?

Cory Doctorow: Nate Kushner was sitting around one night when he started to get IMs from a college student who was looking to commission a term-paper on Hinduism that was due in the morning. She'd seen something about Hinduism in Nate's AIM profile and so she offered him $75 to write the paper. He wrote a silly little paper, strung her along, pranked her, and then published the whole thing along with her real name on his blog:
Laura K. Pahl: lets talk about it then

Nate Kushner: As long as you understand that plagiarism is not going to free you from the painful cycle of death and rebirth any quicker.

Laura K. Pahl: ok

Laura K. Pahl: so can u help me

Nate Kushner: I think I can. It is my duty, as we are all children in the arms of Chivas.

A twelve-year-old kid, looking to make sure he's one of the least-well-liked kids in his classroom among the cheaters, has written up a hack that would let teachers run student papers against a Google check to catch plagiarism. Of course, in testing out the program, his teacher discovered that the program caught the very same 12-year-old who wrote the program in a bit of internet plagiarism himself. Guess he should have tested the program at home first on his own work.

Wrongly Accused Of Being A Trojan

Wrongly Accused Of Being A Trojan 09/08/2004 02:29 PM
Following all those stories about people being wrongly accused of being spammers and put on blacklists, here's a story of McAfee wrongly accusing an ISP setup program as being a trojan. Because of this, anyone using McAfee and ISPWizard found themselves unable to connect to their ISP lately. Even worse, McAfee has been incredibly slow to respond to the issue, though, following the initial news report, they promised to release an update today, a week after the problem first surfaced. McAfee says the reason it happened was that the connection software was very similar to known trojans. As the battle against zombie machines continues, it's likely that more legitimate programs are going to get blocked. It wouldn't be surprising if trojan developers even try to make their programs look increasingly similar to legitimate programs for exactly this reason. All this is really doing is setting up an ongoing escalation battle. At some point, people are going to realize that simply matching application signatures isn't the best way to prevent malicious files. While it's been talked about, it would be nice to see more hybrid approaches that go closer to the root of the problem, rather than the reactive solutions that are popular today.
