Oregon Pedometer with Alarm

Oregon Pedometer with Alarm 09/24/2004 11:46 PM

ipedometer_with_panic_alar.jpg imageThe girls over at Shiny Shiny point out this great new gizmo from Oregon, a pedometer with a built-in panic alarm. If next you're out jogging and can't outpace that Olympic-sprinter-cum-homo-mugger, a push of the panic button will cause an ear-piercing 120dB alarm to blare forth, hopefully scaring the attacker away before you do permanent damage to your taut, muscular ears.

Mobile phone with pedometer built in? 04/07/2005 06:10 PM

Lisa (skinny), Alex (husky), Sammy (skinny), and I (still trying to get down to 180 for flying the R22 helicopter) were walking today around Harvard Square and wondering why pedometers weren't built into cell phones.  A Web search upon returning home revealed just one such phone and it was available only in Japan back in 2003(http://walking.about.co m/b/a/036931.htm).  As our nation gets fatter and we don't even have to get off the couch to answer the phone, wouldn't this be a natural addition to the one electronic gadget that almost everyone carries?

Oregon Gets Biggest Hotspot

Oregon Gets Biggest Hotspot 02/10/2004 02:40 AM
It's always worrisome to qualify networks as the "biggest" but in this case I'd bet that eastern Oregon really does have the biggest hotspot in the country: Yesterday, Boardman and Hermiston, Ore. turned on a 600-square-mile hotspot. The network came about through a public/private initiative and was built by EZ Wireless. The network will be used by the Morrow County Emergency Management and Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program, the police force, and citizens. Initially, it will cover 600 square miles which includes four counties and seven cities, some in Washington. The second phase, which should be complete this summer, will add another seven cities. The press release isn't online and any news organizations in the area either don't post the stories online or require subscriptions from visitors wanting to read the stories online....

Oregon Mall Goes Wireless

Oregon Mall Goes Wireless 02/18/2004 01:17 PM
Cedar Hills Crossing, a mall in Beaverton, Ore., is now covered by Wi-Fi: Access is free to visitors and the network is co-sponsored by Personal Telco. Without interesting applications for visitors, I'm not sure how useful this network will be. I don't often carry my laptop with me when I'm shopping. There is a restaurant here that's covered, however. Plus, this would be a good place for customers to use services that let them scan bar codes and compare products and prices. Best Buy, Borders, and Office Depot are in this mall so those stores might be able to think up some useful applications for the network. The University Village and Bellevue Square malls in the Seattle area, both somewhat upscale places, have full coverage with Cometa. But they also have individual coverage (free and fee) in individual properties throughout. It's unclear whether those two malls have seen any change in visitors or usage -- they haven't discussed it, and they may not even be able to track it....

No on 36: Help save Oregon marriages

No on 36: Help save Oregon marriages 09/20/2004 02:33 AM

Plenty has been written about the mastery of language in use by conservative think tanks these days and I'm reminded of it every time I turn on the news or watch a discussion show featuring conservative guests. I used to discount the importance of language and framing of issues as overly simplistic, but this really is the death of liberals right now. It's in the liberal nature to tell both sides of the story and/or go for a nuanced discussion of issues, but people don't have time or energy to keep those kinds of things straight on hundreds of subjects in the news. I'm constantly impressed by conservatives that can gain traction with somewhat crazy ideas, but do it using such simple language that leaves little room for interpretation.

One instance that is driving it home for me is seeing signs for prop 36 in Oregon. Proposition 36 is the vote on a change to the State Constitution, to clear up the ambiguous language that says "anyone over 18 can marry..." so that is says "A man and a woman over 18 can marry..." I hear the issue is currently polling at around 50%-50%, which surprises me because I thought gay marriage had zero chance of survival in the wild, but looking at the signs it's clear that the No side's language isn't helping them, while the Yes side is killing it.

The No on 36 folks have these complicated signs that say "no on constitutional amendment 36" and although the NO and 36 are the biggest things on it, it still requires them to push a negative with a screaming NO on it. The color is drab and you can't read the words "constitutional ammendment" from a car. The Yes folks have a great distilled message, with multiple colors. It says "One Man. One Woman. Yes on 36." It's simple, concise, and gets the point across without the need for a five-syllable word.

So here's the thing: why don't liberals champion the power slogan? Why can't liberals drop the "yeah, but..." from everything they want to say? Conservatives never feel the need to spell out the specifics, or the drawbacks, or the exceptions, while liberals are almost happy to do it. It obscures the message when you have to add "yeah, but..." to everything you say.

Here's my suggestion for the No on prop 36 folks: Go simple. Your new slogan is "Support Marriages. Support Families. No on 36." That's it. You don't have to explain these are new marriages or expanded definitions of family, just go with short, emotional slogans. People love marriage. People love family. A no vote on 36 means thousands of marriages don't have to be dissolved.

Just as a conservative might repeat the phrase "Progress in Iraq" over and over, you could easily spin gay marriage as a way to encourage more marriages, help create more happy families, and help spread love instead of hate. And when your opponents try to point out "but! but! you're going to ruin civilization!" you can ask they why they hate the institution of marriage, why they want to deny love, and why they want to break up families.

And you can't argue with that on a 2 foot-by-3 foot sign at 60mph.

Eugene, Oregon, Wants Downtown Wi-Fi

Eugene, Oregon, Wants Downtown Wi-Fi 03/27/2005 06:15 PM

The city's daily newspaper urges Wi-Fi rollout: I grew up in Eugene. This is a fairly conservative paper in a pretty liberal town. And there's no sock-puppet talk here. Just a concern about keeping Eugene, a kind of island in the middle of the state with a large liberal-arts university, on track to keep the economy humming. They don't suggest city-wide Wi-Fi, but downtown Wi-Fi for free, which is a good starting place to understand usage.

Eugene's downtown used to be cited by city planners because in the 1960s, they converted from a street-based downtown to a pedestrian-only one. Streets were paved over. Remarkably, shoppers and businesses slowly fled downtown into surrounding areas and the Valley River Center Mall a few miles away on the other side of the Willamette River. A few years ago, the pedestrian mall was ripped out and life has slowly returned to downtown.

alarm! alarm!

alarm! alarm! 01/11/2004 10:13 AM

I was woken up this morning (before 7 am) to the horrible screeching of the building's fire alarm (yes, the building's not my apartment's). It's a pretty bad way to wake up. I was about to go down and see what was happening when it stopped. This has been a problem once before in the past. Needless to say, I couldn't go back to sleep, and it took me a while to get the sound out of my head and to quell a rising headache. Then I got to work, write a bit, etc.

A few minutes back I was right "in the zone" and the alarm went off again. Damn. I went down. "They are fixing it". Right. Then it stopped.

About 10 minutes ago it started up again and they are stopping it and starting it intermittently as they try to fix it. It's impossible to concentrate. If this keeps up, I'll go for a walk. And hopefully they'll get it fixed for the rest of the day at least, so I can get some work done!

Ah, the wonders of technology.

mp100_blue-thumb.JPG imageOregon Scientific is taking a stab at the "World's Smallest MP3 Player" title, but considering they don't throw a quarter or a finger or something into the picture Tech-Digest has (which can be added to the pictures on their barely-functional site for a total of... one) doesn't really tell us much. What we do know, though, is that the £90 (~$165) MP100 player has only 128MB of flash memory, so you pretty much wrinkle your nose at it, too, no matter how tiny it is.

There are other players being launched, too, including the MP130 with an SD/MMC expansion slot. (See, a little expansion never hurt no one.) And the MP140, not out for a few months, is listed as having a "transparent display." Barring marketing gobbledegook, that could be pretty interesting, considering that MP140 is only 6.6mm thick.
