TomTom GO 300 and 700

TomTom GO 300 and 700 03/17/2005 03:52 AM

tomtomgo_700.jpg imageThere are two new models of TomTom GO GPS systems on the table, both of which appear to be fairly well-featured. The "700" and "300" follow suit of previous TomTom GO models, but the "700" eliminates the SD slot and adds an integrated 2.5GB hard drive as well as Bluetooth functionality. Hell, it even has an RF remote control now. The 300, on the other hand, remains with the SD slot and lacks Bluetooth and remote control. No word on price yet, but I'm pretty sure it is still cheaper to buy a road atlas.

CTIA: New TomTom GO 300 and 700 with Bluetooth [ChaitGear]

Update: David from ChaitGear qualifies:

Just to clarify, the TomTom GO 300 >does< have BT built in, but only usable for GPRS comms for the PLUS data service -- whereas the GO 700 has the full handsfree tech. Actually, the entire 2005 range has support for the PLUS service (as they're all BT based): TomTom GO 700, TomTom GO 500, TomTom GO 300, TomTom MOBILE 5, TomTom NAVIGATOR 5 and TomTom RIDER.

Navigator #1 01/09/2004 09:53 PM
My Garmin 2610 GPS navigator arrived this afternoon, on time, from CompuPlus, a cheapie online merchant. But I had to help my son with his homework when all I wanted to do was play with my new toy. Damn homework! The unit seems smaller than I remember it from my friend's car. But such is the illusion of consumerism. The installation instructions are mediocre. The software installed pretty easily despite that, although I'm not sure that my registration went through. I got a mysterious error code. But the mapping software seems to be unlocked, so I'm proceeding. When you turn...

Navigator #2 01/09/2004 09:53 PM
Off on a 1.5 hour trip tomorrow with the new Garmin GPS navigator. Part one takes me 20 miles away to Halley's place; I've never been in that neighborhood and it sounds like it's a bit tricky to find. Then it's on to Portsmouth, with Halley and Jackson, to a Dean meeting. So, this should be a good test. I'm having trouble with the UI for requesting routes. When I do a text search for an address, three times out of three it's told me that it doesn't exist, although if I use the map zoomed in all the way,...

Apple's Knowledge Navigator revisited

Apple's Knowledge Navigator revisited 10/28/2003 11:06 PM
knowledge navigator During my session at BloggerCon I referred to Apple's famous Knowledge Navigator concept video. I first saw that video in 1988. Today I tracked down a copy and watched it again. It stands the test of time rather well! Certain elements of that vision are now routine -- for example, Google found me the video and WiFi delivered it to a PowerBook which, when equipped with its iSight camera, bears a family resemblance to the Dynabook-like talking computer featured in the video. Other aspects are still far out of reach, especially the conversational interface based on deep understanding of natural language. ...

Waterfield Bags launched a SleeveCase designed specifically for the Mac Mini within weeks of the official Apple announcement. In its default configuration as I received it, the SleeveCase is merely what it claims to be, a case into which a Mac Mini will fit. However, Waterfield offers a configuration with a detachable shoulder strap. (read the review) This makes it very comparable to the eM2 bag we reviewed a few weeks ago...

Review: DVD Studio Pro 3

Review: DVD Studio Pro 3 07/09/2004 08:31 PM
“The attraction to Apple’s DVD Studio Pro for me is threefold: ease of use, flexibility and power,” David Nagel writes for Digital Producer magazine. “These three factors came together in one tight, highly intuitive package known as DVD Studio Pro 2 last year, when, for the first time, we gave the program our rare Must Buy recommendation (a first for any DVD authoring system). Now, at version 3, it’s even more powerful, flexible and intuitive than ever.” [Jul 9]

Filemaker Pro 7 Review

Filemaker Pro 7 Review 04/18/2004 09:51 AM

FileMaker Pro 7 review by PC Magazine: Here an interesting review of the new FileMaker Pro 7.

Compared with Microsoft Access, FileMaker retains a distinctive edge in usability. Granted, Access has the advantage when it comes to implementing larger-scale applications that have heftier programmatic needs. But Version 7 extends FileMaker's appeal farther into the midrange database space.

I played with this app once, and, true to its Mac roots, it was intuitive and anything and just as easy to use.

I was encouraged to find a few ODBC drivers as well, but if you're going to remove the interface, what's the point? (Maybe not fair — I think there's a legitimate use for data creation and administration via the client app, and publishing to the world via the Web, but that's just me. Use the app to manage to content, then just FTP it up to your server.)
