Da Vinci Notebooks. Day-by-day Da Vinci - read the pages of Leonardo Da Vinci's Notebooks by RSS, one at a time. (Matt Webb via LibrarianInBlack) [Synesthesia]

The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci

Day-by-day Da Vinci. Read the pages of the Notebooks by RSS, one at a time. (Credits.)

I want to read the Notebooks, but there are 1,565 pages and I have too much else to read.

At a page a day it would take a little over four years, but be manageable.

Fortunately Project Gutenberg (who make freely available online out-of-copyright books) has created a text version of the Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci. You can download it. It lacks the illustrations of the original, but it's Good Enough.

Using this site, I can read one page a day using my RSS News Reader. Find an RSS News Reader. I started at page 1 on May 30th, 2004. I'm now on page 10. You can either read along with me, or start reading at page 1 today.

Subscribe to one of the following two feeds (copy and paste the URL into your Reader):

¨ Start reading today (starts at page 1): http ://interconnected.org/home/more/davinci/2004-06-08.rss
¨ Read with me (starts at page 10): http ://interconnected.org/home/more/davinci/2004-05-30.rss

Whichever feed you choose, the fifteen most recent pages are shown (so you can get a little behind and still catch up).

To see what you're getting yourself into, read page 1 now, or a random page.

Also read the translator's original preface and the V olume I table of contents.

Da Vinci coupe

Da Vinci coupe 07/03/2004 01:40 PM
homeToday's New York Times has a feature about how Italian scientists built a working model of "L'automobile di Leonard da Vinci," a self-propelled vehicle powered by a motor made of coiled springs. Pushing the machine backwards or turning the wheels counterclockwise would wind up the motors like a toy car that you pull back and then release. The car has no seats and was designed as a special effects prop for a theatrical production. It's currently on display at the Institute and Museum for the History of Science in Florence.
"While a scale model of the Da Vinci-mobile has been observed... to move, change direction, start and stop - thus proving that the design works - the full-size model weighing hundreds of pounds is seen, even by its own builders, as too hazardous to set loose on an unsuspecting public."

Rebuilt Da Vinci Self-Propelled Wagon

Rebuilt Da Vinci Self-Propelled Wagon 07/03/2004 11:36 AM

italy.184.jpg imageThe Times has a great article about a modern-day recreation of a design by Leonardo Da Vinci -- a three-wheeled wagon that may not only have been the world's first self-propelled vehicle, but possibly one of the first computers. Powered by a wound spring, tensed by pushing the wagon backwards, the range of the device -- which has been rebuilt for the Leonardo museum and library in Vinci, Italy -- was only about 40 yards. Not enough for a trip to the trip to the store, but enough, perhaps, to move a prop across a stage by itself.
