Sony PSP Video from Tokyo Game Show

Sony PSP Video from Tokyo Game Show 09/27/2004 10:49 AM

tgs_psp_video.jpg imageSo something happened to me while I was watching this video of the Sony PSP from the Tokyo Game Show. I think it was in the middle of the Darkstalkers game that I realized that all my worries about battery life, size, and durability were sort of moot, because I want to play portable games that look like that right now. I'm not ready to call it the next portable platform winner, but if they can eke more than the rumored 2-3 hours of play time out of that battery they've got a very good shot at stealing the majority market from Nintendo.

weird_toy.jpg imageContuing coverage of the Tokyo International Gift Show, ITmedia today brings images and explanations of some various gifts that react to humans. There's too many explain here, but I found the most depressing to be the "Little Nod" from Bandai (pictured at right). The basic concept is similar to a magic 8-ball, except that you get positive and negative response. There is apparently a 70% chance of the former, and 30% chance of the latter; the doll will nod for affirmative and shake its head for negative.

Sony PSP Handheld Entertainment System

Sony PSP Handheld Entertainment System 03/29/2005 02:21 AM

Since both Nintendo and Sony announced new handheld consoles well over a year ago, gamers have been anticipating both new systems. The DS arrived to great fanfare in late 2004. Now it's Sony's turn.

The PSP is much more than a gaming console. It plays videos, MP3s, and stores photos among other things. And the screen... it's big. Do the big screen and extra features along with the higher price tag add up?

It's console-level gaming in the palm of your hand. With headphones you can have a great game almost anywhere, with no meaningful diminishment in quality or graphics from the fact that you are using a handheld. If you're fairly tech literate, finding torrents of your favorite shows, or ripping your own DVDs (beware the DMCA) to play on the PSP is a no brainer, and the MP3 functions are just icing on the cake.

Sounds promising. Dig in to Ben Kuchera's review for the full scoop on Sony's latest and greatest.

Nintendo And Sony Gear Up To Fight It
Out Over Handheld Gaming
05/06/2004 12:55 PM
It must be fun to speculate when there's nothing much to go on. Wired News is talking about the upcoming battle between Nintendo and Sony for their next generation handheld gaming systems. The problem is that the details of both systems aren't expected until next week at E3. So, for the time being, we're left with speculation based on the little bits of info they've released and their expected target markets. Many people are already declaring Sony the winner, despite the fact that Nintendo has a lot more experience in this market (98% marketshare right now). The real question is whether or not that's defining the market too narrowly. If you define it as a segment of the overall video gaming market, then obviously Sony has a pretty good track record as well. Also, as the article points out, Sony's plan to go after the young adult market may be a lot more lucrative. Of course, there's a reason that we actually wait until the market speaks before declaring a winner, so idle predictions based on speculation might not be worth much.
