Two new wireless Pocket PCs from Asus

Two new wireless Pocket PCs from Asus 11/18/2003 12:42 PM
A couple of new Pocket PC from Asus, the MyPal A716, which will have built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, and the MyPal A8100 (pictured at right), a Pocket PC Phone. Besides the WiFi and Bluetooth, the A716 will have a 400MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, and both SD and CompactFlash memory card slots. We're more excited about the A8100, though, which with its fold down keypad looks a bit like Sony Ericsson's new P900 smartphone. No word on when either of these might hit American shores. Read...

D-Link Wireless Pocket Router/AP

D-Link Wireless Pocket Router/AP 08/13/2004 12:19 PM

D-Link-DWL-G730AP.jpg imageFollowing Apple and SMC's lead, D-Link is releasing a travel-sized Wi-Fi access point, the "Wireless Pocket Router/AP." Among other tricks, the D-Link DWL-G730AP can receive power over USB, sort of an odd twist that would mean your handy pocket router all the sudden would tie your laptop back into the wall (unless you brought two laptops, natch). Looks decent, all-in-all, and much more attractive than the SMC (and dare I say the AirPort Express?)

Expect it in mid-September for around $100.

Pocket PC to have Bluetooth, too
11/03/2003 12:18 PM
Dell is confirming that they will be putting Bluetooth into the next version of their wireless Axim X3i Pocket PC which is due out next year (the current version only has built-in 802.11b WiFi, though that isn't anything to complain about). They originally were going to put it in there (the Bluetooth logo even appears on its antenna), but took it out to keep costs down. Read...

Brighthand review of HP's h4155 wireless
Pocket PC
11/02/2003 03:15 PM
Brighthand review of the new iPAQ h4155 Pocket PC from Hewlett Packard. The h4155 (which has a 400MHz processor, 64MB of RAM, and both Bluetooth and WiFi built-in) has largely been overshadowed by some of the other handhelds that have come out recently, like Palm's Tungsten T3 and Dell's Axim X3i, but if Brighthand's enthusiasm is any indication, this one is not worth overlooking:They said it couldn't be done. That creating a pocketable, multimedia-capable handheld with a magnificent color screen, fast processor and, heaven forbid, two forms of wireless was an impossibility -- a contradiction of terms, so to speak. Well, it seems that no one informed HP of this apparent conundrum. Its new iPAQ h4155 Pocket PC does just that, and it may well be the best looking device on the market to boot.By the way (and we know it's pointlessly confusing), but the h4155 is also known as...

Blogging : Gateways For Paedophiles?

Blogging : Gateways For Paedophiles? 02/01/2005 09:40 PM
A recently published paper has brought much needed light to a rather ugly element of the internet : child abuse. The paper looks at a generation of youths brought up with online weblogs and the potentially serious risks posed to them; it points to worryingly little being done to minimize the risks via sensible education and advice. The paper is based on research done by Dr Rachel O'Connell at the Cyberspace Research Unit, part of the University of Central Lancashire.

Dr O'Connell said that blogs could give paedophiles a simple way of tracking the movements of young children. She expressed especial concern at the rise of moblogs (Mobile Blogs) where users send photos from camera phones straight to their blog. Dr O'Connell said that Moblogs are "a paedophile's dream because you have children uploading pictures, giving out details of their everyday life because it's an online journal." The Protection of Children and Prevention of Sexual Offences Bill, currently before the Scottish Parliament, is attempting to address some of the problems raised.

It's important to understand that the paper isn't so much saying that blogs are a bad thing; rather, it's highlighting that due to the lack of guidance as to what content might be appropriate (i.e. recollections on a days trip to Wales) and what might not be (i.e. plans for the next week along side your mobile phone number) blogging poses a serious risk to naive youths. Dr O'Connell said that on most Blogging sites, there was "absolutely no internet safety information or guidance whatsoever".
