04/12/2005 04:33 PMDavid Pescovitz:
BB pal Alberto Gaitán says that the latest rev of HAL (Hybrid
Assistive Limb), a mobile suit gundam of sorts, "looks like a pain to
dress into, but it sure would go far into making the otherwise-able
more fully-abled. I think it's exciting for gimps (and I say that with
all due
pride)." From New Scientist:
(Click image for diagram of HAL 3.) Two control systems interact
to help the wearer stand, walk and climb stairs. A "bio-cybernic"
system uses bioelectric sensors attached to the skin on the legs to
monitor signals transmitted from the brain to the muscles. It can do
this because when someone intends to stand or walk, the nerve signal
to the muscles generates a detectable electric current on the skin's
surface. These currents are picked up by the sensors and sent to the
computer, which translates the nerve signals into signals of its own
for controlling electric motors at the hips and knees of the
exoskeleton. It takes a fraction of a second for the motors to respond
accordingly, and in fact they respond fractionally faster to the
original signal from the brain than the wearer's muscles do...
"It's like riding on a robot, rather than wearing one," says
(University of Tsukuba researcher Yoshiyuki) Sankai.

ReplayTV suit ends. About a year and a half ago, the EFF along
with five plantiffs (including Craig from Craigslist.org) brought
about a suit against Hollywood studios in order to defend their rights
to continue using ReplayTV, after the same companies sued ReplayTV...
[PVRblog]
Wow! Bummer. I've been waiting years for a precedent case to
establish fair use rights with TV shows and recorded movies.
Now we're back to square one.
But a giant thanks goes out to Craig Newmark and the EFF.
MLB Online Hit With Patent Suit
MLB Online Hit With Patent Suit
09/09/2004 06:33 PMNot sure what the deal is today with companies who have been using
bizarre interpretations of intellectual property to their advantage
suddenly getting hit with intellectual property lawsuits. First, we
had the
RIAA
get sued for patent infringement and now
MLB Online is
getting sued for patent infringement over some patents concerning
the real-time display of game information online. Not surprisingly,
it's a small patent hoarding company rather than a company that is
actually doing any innovating. Of course, MLB.com doesn't exactly
have a sparkling record when it comes to intellectual property
freedom. You may recall that they wanted to stop all other sites from
reporting in-game data (facts) because they seemed to believe
they
owned all the rights to in-game data. Of course, you can't
copyright facts. Once again, though, this lawsuit is unlikely to make
MLB.com realize some of the problems with the way intellectual
property is dealt with these days.

SCO suit digs into copyright
SCO suit digs into copyright
12/08/2003 01:06 PM
The open source legal battle launched by the SCO
group earlier this year returned to the public eye once more with
an exchange between SCO's CEO and the leading advocate for
intellectual property reform.
Darl McBride published
the first of a promised series of open letters , which describe
SCO's position on intellectual property. McBride argues that the
general public license (
GPL )is essentially unconstitutional. This
widely-read article then elicited a response from Stanford University law
professor Lawrence Lessig , who
replied that GPL is within the constitutional framework of
intellectual property ownership.

SCO Suit Against DaimlerChrysler Tossed
07/21/2004 04:25 PMContinuing the ongoing farce that is SCO's legal strategy and (they
bizarrely seem to believe) business model,
John points us to
the latest over at Groklaw noting that it sounds like
pret
ty much the entire case against DaimlerChrysler has been
dismissed. You may recall that SCO made a
big
stink about how they were going to start suing companies, despite
the lack of any real evidence that they have any IP claims on Linux,
with AutoZone and DaimlerChrysler being the initial targets. It
appears that strategy has gone down the drain now as well. If this
doesn't convince companies to ignore baseless threats from SCO, I
don't know what will.
