Banning the Bible to Get Out the Vote

Banning the Bible to Get Out the Vote

Banning the Bible to Get Out the Vote 09/24/2004 12:04 PM

There have been some rumors floating around lately about an RNC ad that is being sent to people living in the Bible Belt about how 'liberals' want to "ban the Bible" (what that really means, I don't know, but there you have it). It ain't a rumor folks, this is U.S. Presidential Campaign 2004, at its finest.

This is a GrokNews Entry: (what is grok?)

Why IP banning is useless

Why IP banning is useless 02/10/2004 02:38 PM

Many proposals for eliminating comment spam are focused on banning or throttling comments from the IP address of the spammer. This is fundamentally flawed because it assumes IP addresses are both unique and hard to come by.

Banning an IP address can have severe consequences. Many ISPs (including AOL) and companies use a proxy server that makes it appear as if all users are coming from a single (or a handful) if IP addresses. By blocking an IP address, you might be preventing a substantial portion of AOL users from commenting. Depending on your point of view, eliminating AOL may not be a great loss; however the same thing would happen to millions of users behind other proxy servers.

The other problem is that IP addresses are very easy to get or fake for spammers who care about such things. There are hundreds of thousands of open proxies that will let anyone direct Web traffic through them. When I’m using an open proxy, my IP address is effectively masked. And I can use simple software to switch to a different open proxy (and thus a different IP address) every few minutes. So my spamming activity isn’t tied to a specific IP address.

Hypothetically speaking, if the problem of open proxies were to disappear overnight, there are two other mechanisms that provide a limitless set of IP addresses to spammers: dialup and spoofing.

Most dialup ISPs provide a different IP address each time you dial in. If a spammer were to find that their IP address had been banned, they could simply disconnect and redial. It would be trivial to automate the process of dialing in, spamming, disconnecting, and dialing back in.

IP addresses are easy to fake as well. The design principles of TCP/IP allows the sender of a packet to specify its IP address. The message will still be routed to its destination using the fake origin address. Return packets would be mis-routed, however, because TCP/IP would send responses to the true location of the IP address rather than where it actually came from. This means that IP spoofing is ineffective in situations where you need to interact with a remote server, but very effective in a one-way conversation. I can’t retrieve a Web page using a spoofed IP address because I need to make the request and then have the server send me the page. But I can send requests all day long if I don’t care about the response.

Posting a comment (or TrackBack) doesn’t require interaction. I can send a comment in a POST or GET message and not worry about the response if I don’t care about receiving acknowledgment that it was successful.

Banning By Keyword?

Banning By Keyword? 08/09/2004 03:09 PM
It's well known that China blocks out certain websites, but their latest move to stop people from accessing content the government considers harmful is to have certain local search engines ban keywords. Apparently, popular Chinese search engine Baidu has a list of about 40,000 banned keywords. It's not entirely clear what happens if someone does search on a banned keyword (0 search results? told you've searched on banned words? immediately told to report to the local prison?), but with so many banned keywords there must be an awful lot of collateral damage in terms of perfectly reasonable websites that can't be found. Of course, it's been clear for a while that the Chinese government really isn't too concerned with "false positives" in their efforts to ban anything they consider to be "harmful" online.

Banning Emailed Executables

Banning Emailed Executables 11/14/2003 05:14 PM
The latest tactic in stopping emailed virus attacks is to stop letting a mail server pass on emailed executables. MIT is apparently rejecting all such messages. Of course, the virus writers will quickly figure out a social engineering trick around this, and will try to get people to download the executable from somewhere else. Besides, there certainly are cases where it does make sense to email an executable, and suddenly people are going to need to figure out a way around that block.

Parents Banning Children From The Web

Parents Banning Children From The Web 04/14/2004 02:26 PM
Parents are still struggling to figure out how to let their children on the internet without putting them at risk. A new study says that some parents (8%) have resorted to banning the internet completely. This seems likely to guarantee that the kids run over to their friends' homes to access the internet instead - without any supervision. Nearly 40% of parents aren't worried at all, with another 30% saying that they only allow their kids online with supervision - which sounds like the smart way to teach kids how to be responsible online. 40% also use tools to protect their kids, though the study doesn't suggest how (in)effective these tools are.

RSS abuse and Slashdot IP banning

RSS abuse and Slashdot IP banning 05/12/2004 03:50 PM

I've had a number of people ask me about t his blog entry, whose title suggests that FeedDemon was banned from Slashdot. If you read the entire entry you'll find out that the subject is misleading - it's really about how Slashdot tries to protect itself from people who make too many requests on their feed.

Given the un necessary bandwidth consumption caused by some RSS readers, Slashdot certainly has every right to try to protect themselves from RSS abuse. The problem is that they ban based on IP address - which obviously causes problems for those behind a proxy server that shares a single IP address with dozens of other users. In all fairness, though, I'm not sure of a better solution to Slashdot's valid concerns.

Anyway...since some who read the aforementioned article thought it might be due to a problem in FeedDemon, I just wanted to make it clear that this will happen regardless of which RSS reader you use if you're behind an IP-sharing proxy. As I pointed out in an earlier post, FeedDemon employs a number of techniques to keep bandwidth consumption to a minimum - which not only keeps it 'Net-friendly, but also makes it extremely fast since it doesn't waste time performing unnecessary updates.

The BNP (British National Party) is the main racist political group in the UK. Whilst the party tries to present itself as a moderate voice for white Britons, its leader has convictions for inciting race hatred, and the party has numerous links to various White Supremacist groups in Europe and America. Its main political programme is the "resettlement of non-whites to their lands of ethnic origin", and members must be "of British or closely kindred native European stock".

For the past nine months, much of the attention of the IT world has been drawn to the SCO v. IBM case. Having started out as a case about breach of contract, it is now about all three key areas of intellectual property law: copyright law (was code illegally copied from Unix into Linux?), patent law (did SCO violate IBM's patents?), and trademark law (who owns 'UNIX'?).

Universities banning servers, harming

Universities banning servers, harming
education
05/20/2004 01:05 AM
My cow-orker Jason Schulz is at the DC EDUCAUSE conference, talking about the ways that universities can use computer networks to improve or detract form the educational experience. Some of the current higher-ed thinking is abysmal:
Penn State now has an absolute ban on any student running a server in a residential dorm. Period. The only possible exception is if you swear to only use it for "educational" purposes and get written permission from a faculty member and get approval from the Vice Provost.

So this is part of Penn State's solution to copyright infringement: Take away computing tools from students. As Ed Felten pointed out in our later panel discussion, this is a very dangerous approach for educational institutions to take. Computer science students often learn best through hands-on experimentation and tinkering with technology, and as Jamie Boyle noted in his plenary talk, unplanned experimentation often bears the biggest educational fruit. To paraphrase: "How many times do we learn more from the book next to the book we originally went to find on the shelf, or from the article after the article we looked up in the journal?" Hence, restricting access to content and technology out of fear for infringment can have a very real and direct impact on the ability of students to learn. [Note: Both Yahoo! and Google began as "unauthorized" Stanford student experiments with servers -- should those had been banned as well?]

'Secularism is one of the great successes of the Republic,' Chirac said in an address to the nation. 'It is a crucial element of social peace and national cohesion. We cannot let it weaken.' Chirac said he would push for a law to be enacted in time for the school year that begins next autumn. Islamic head scarves, Jewish skullcaps and large crucifixes would fall under the ban.

Some jackass analyst at Gartner is advising employers to ban iPods and other personal storage tech from the workplace to prevent leakage of s33kr1ts from within the corporate hive. Likely successor recommendation: decapitating all outgoing employees.
"Portable storage products can bypass perimeter defences like firewalls and antivirus at the mailserver, and introduce malware such as Trojans or viruses onto company networks."

Devices mentioned include "disk-based MP3 players, such as Apple's iPod, and digital cameras with smart media cards, memory sticks, compact flash and other memory media"...

"Businesses must ensure that the right procedures and technologies are adopted to securely manage the use of portable storage devices like USB keychain drives. This will help to limit damage from malicious code, loss of proprietary information or intellectual property, and consequent lawsuits and loss of reputation," the report stated.
