The Song Remains the Same

The Song Remains the Same 08/20/2004 12:17 PM
In an August memo typed from his hospital bed, Steve Jobs -- Apple's chief executive, patriarch and media impresario--let his employees know he would be out for a month to recover from surgery to remove a rare form of pancreatic cancer. Patients with this type of cancer, called an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor, have a 90% survival rate, especially if treated early. Apple says Jobs is due back in September.

A Jobs-less Apple is tough to imagine. The Monday after the memo was made public, shares fell 2%, the Nasdaq was flat. With his silver beard, round specs and trademark black mock turtleneck, Jobs personifies Apple and its brand:hip, independent and gleefully geeky. He drives its design and marketing prowess and is chief credit-taker for the iPod's wild success. (Name another product to hit $1 billion in three years.)

"Apple is nothing without him," says Jobs cohort and Frog Design founder Hartmut Esslinger.

The board of directors says a secret succession plan is in place should Jobs ever be unable to run Apple. "We're not avoiding the subject. Succession is clearly part of our ongoing discussions," says Apple director Millard (Mickey)Drexler, also chairman of J. Crew.

Depression and The Beauty that Remains

Depression and The Beauty that Remains 01/23/2004 06:33 PM
Over the last several days, there has been an extraordinary bloom of sweet commentary pursuant to my last three posts regarding the departure of Spalding Gray. Your eloquence, humor, and, above all, your honesty are proof to me that he is alive and, indeed, becoming more so in your hearts. You are his witnesses. What you've said here is all the evidence one needs that Spalding planted something beautiful, if a little goofy, in this world that will continue to blossom even without his being here to tend it. I am particularly grateful to the many who've openly discussed their own battles with depression, the most insidious enemy there can be. Fighting clinical depression is an inevitably lonely struggle. What could be less conducive to compassion than a disease that make you whine? Laymen and loved ones tell you to get a grip. They make you feel ashamed to be sick. Even if they're more enlightened about the disease, they can't help but harbor a secret, naturally human, belief that you are suffering a failure of will rather than biochemistry. Meanwhile, the doctors consider little but the neuro-soup and turn you into a shambling medical experiment, testing pharmaceutical nostrums on you that are as blunt as the mind is subtle, though just as unpredictable. Meanwhile, your cold world trudges on. It remains, despite all visible signs of well-being - wonderful spouse, great kids, well-located house, whatever - a purgatory of uselessness, barren of joy and meaning. Love, incoming or out-going, becomes something you think, not feel. I am very grateful that this has provided a forum where some of you feel free to speak of this affliction, which is too often suffered in a terrible silence. I am also very grateful for the personal tales you've told about your encounters with him, real and virtual, and how he affected your lives. Your comments are ample evidence that he was a good teacher. I fear that his children, and in particular his marvelous young sons, Forrest and Theo, will remember little of who he really was and what he really did. Worse, I suspect that much of what will remain as the memory of their father will be shadowed by who he became after depression closed its ghostly fist around his light. To the goal that they might re-remember him for them through our tales, I want to make a little book of your comments following the last three posts and give it to them. If any of you object to being included, and I hope none of you will, please let me know. They are better than the flowers one might send otherwise....

Artificial Intelligence Remains Elusive

Artificial Intelligence Remains Elusive 05/02/2004 05:49 AM
Artificial Intelligence Remains Elusive by Fred Reed of The Washington Times
http://washingtontimes.com/technology/20040421-092316-6983r.htm
Whatever happened to artificial intelligence? There was a time, a couple of decades ago, when computers were expected soon to be able to behave intelligently -- to talk to people in English, answer questions, and make complex decisions. What people really had in mind was an artificial human. HAL, the computer in the movie '2001: A Space Odyssey,' comes to mind. It didn't happen. Today, although computers have advanced phenomenally in power, we see them doing very little that reasonably could be called intelligent. We still can't talk to computers about the meaning of art or why Rome fell. Why? ... First, it's harder than many thought it would be. ... Another reason for the apparent lack of machine intelligence is that, if you know how a computer does something, it no longer seems intelligent. ... An example of what might be regarded as intelligent behavior is automated translation of language. This is done by Google, for example. ... Finally, the use in connection with computers of words such as 'memory,' 'language' and 'logic' raised expectations of potential human likeness that weren't supported by reality."
