Cory Doctorow: With the hockey labor dispute leaving an on-air void where televised hockey used to sit, G4TechTV is broadcasting virtual hockey games played using video-game engines:

All 1,230 regular season games originally slated for the 2004-2005 NHL season will be played, with results of each video game match-up available to fans who tune-in daily to "Sweat." Up-to-the-minute scores, stats, teams and player profiles will be online at www.g4techtv.com.

Toy Poodles and The Real Thing

Toy Poodles and The Real Thing 05/21/2004 02:24 PM
I cannot imagine why anyone would write this dog of an article called Writing Scalable Applications with PHP. There's no real discussion of scalability at all; the article talks very superficially about database connectivity. Why bother writing? For lame bragging rights perhaps? My respect for Linux Journal continues to drop.

In contrast, George Schlossnagle writes a really good article on Scaling Oracle and PHP. Congratulations to Oracle for continuing to support PHP. And George, you the man!

The only thing I would have liked included in George's article was a more thorough discussion of Oracle's Shared Servers (formerly MTS). Unlike George, I have found it a good connection pooling solution when properly tuned, definitely better than PHP persistent connections.

Coke's music downloads: the real thing? 12/08/2003 04:47 PM
Coca-Cola is launching a digital music download service in the UK:
Coca-Cola will become the first high-profile consumer brand to get involved directly in the music business, launching what it claims will be the largest collection of tracks yet available. (...) The site, MyCokeMusic.com, will launch in January next year offering a catalogue of over 250,000 new and recent hits from more than 8,500 artists with all four major record labels represented.

It also promises back catalogue hits from established artists, although some major acts such as The Beatles have yet to allow their songs to be sold digitally. Given the ongoing controversy over the apparent conflict between its claim it would not market its drinks to under-12s and its sponsorship of the chart, Coca-Cola today made it clear only those over 18 would be able to buy music through the site. It plans to back the launch with a year-long campaign to promote legal music downloads, including promotions on its cans and bottles to win free tracks.

Video Game Sports Taking Over For The
Real Thing
09/27/2004 03:20 AM
Every year when big sporting events come, you always see news organizations run the various teams through a sports game simulator to see what the game predicts will happen. They do it every year with the Superbowl and the World Series among others. Well, now that there's a labor battle in the hockey world, it appears that G4techTV (which hasn't really recovered since buying, and then ditching TechTV) has decided it will start playing the games virtually and posting the scores and stats to their website along with videos from the virtual games. Parent company Comcast claims they'll feature video highlights from the games on their Sportsnet Channel as well (as if anyone watches it). Of course, there's no indication if anyone will actually care. Apparently, G4 hasn't decided which video hockey game they'll be using, so it may just depend on which one coughs up enough dough to sponsor the event.

Guardian's videogame bl0g

Guardian's videogame bl0g 08/02/2004 06:38 AM
The Guardian has started a games-blog, just in time to respond to the hysteria in the fishwrap Daily Mail about "killer games" that "inspire real world violence."
Yesterday the Daily Mail invited readers to visit its online chatroom and respond to a typically ferocious anti-videogame rant, which took up two pages of the newspaper. Strangely, by 5pm the same evening, the 'should violent videogames be banned?' thread had been removed 'pending review', much to the confusion of those who were involved in what seemed to be a lively and mostly intelligent discussion. Could the reason perhaps have been that general opinion was very much against the proposition? Not to be silenced, however, visitors have started the thread again, and it's worth a look – in stark contrast to the paper itself, you should find some in-depth, well-considered and informed responses to a tragic incident. Unless it's all been removed for 'review' again...

Sadly, it appears the 'Streamline' doesn't have the horsepower to do those cool 3D Sega fishing games from the Dreamcast era, so for now it's 16-bit quality reeling (if you can get a hold of one).

AK Rocker Videogame Seat

AK Rocker Videogame Seat 09/13/2004 07:22 AM

rocker_sear.jpg imageI had to share Fun Furde's incredulous attitude about this AK Rocker chair. Does anyone really need to use XtreMe Rocking Chairz in the "sand, snow or dirt?" It looks comfortable enough, I guess, but it would be sort of embarrassing to have one of these sitting around in your nice living room. They're cheap enough, at around $80 (or less on eBay, it seems), to consider getting a couple to play Gran Turismo 4 when it hits the streets.

Clearly, though, they should have called them "Rockaro" seats.

Hi, we were hoping that BoingBoing readers would be perfect for a research project we at the Institute for the Future are starting. We're creating a history of video games, not just with input from experts (we'll use some of course) but primarily using a lot of real players' experiences with the role of video games in their lives. Since we're a non-profit a lot of our work goes public; this history map and the future forecasts we create from it will go on our web site when we're done. Thanks!

The joy of hockey

The joy of hockey 02/01/2005 09:15 PM
I've never met a sport I didn't like, and recently I was introduced -- albeit very late in my sporting career -- to hockey. Oh hockey, where have you been my whole life? After only three days of wobbling around the rink (read: local pond) I am addicted and ready to check and slap shot with abandon! Soon I shall begin a proper training regiment to prepare myself for the ladies hockey games that occur weekly at my landlord's pond/rink. Bobby Orr, watch out! Update: I hadn't realized my mom posted some photos of our hockey action as well (since she's the one that took them all). Here's a shot of me scoring on my dad. Amazing! He must not have been trying very hard...

Ernest Miller says, "Washington State's ban on the sale (to minors) of violent videogames depicting violence against 'law enforcement officers' was held unconstitutional yesterday on First Amendment grounds. The 15-page decision is here: [PD F]. My favorite quote from the decision:
Would a game built around The Simpsons or the Looney Tunes characters be "realistic" enough to trigger the Act? Is the level of conflict represented in spoofs like the Dukes of Hazard sufficiently "aggressive?" Do the Roman centurions of Age of Empires, the enemy officers depicted in Splinter Cell, or the conquering forces of Freedom Fighters qualify as "public law enforcement officers?"

A Brief Primer On Ice Hockey

A Brief Primer On Ice Hockey 05/24/2004 06:50 PM
The sport of hockey has been the long neglected stepchild of North American team competition. While many have watched the Red Wings on TV, or possibly been to one or two games, hockey is still relatively unknown to most people south of the Canadian border. This is unfortunate , as hockey could be considered the most fast paced and intelligent sports played today.

FBI Worried About Evil Videogame
Millionaire Terrorist Threat
05/10/2004 05:39 PM
Oh that FBI. They sure can raid high schools to stop file sharing, but when it comes to tracking down terrorist threats, it appears that they're a little confused by reality. LawMeme points us to a story about how the FBI was especially worried about "reclusive but evil millionaire" Don Emilio Fulci who supposedly "had formed a terrorist group that was planning chemical attacks against London and Washington, D.C.." The threat was considered so great that it was listed in their daily "threat matrix" and FBI director Robert Mueller was briefed. Apparently, it took a bored Whitehouse staffer to do some research on Google and figure out that this "evil" millionaire was actually just a character in a video game. Of course, I just did a Google search on the name and not much turns up other than the US News article linked here. Yahoo's search, however, turns up an FAQ for the video game.

Zero-g Robotics on an Air Hockey Table 05/28/2004 03:48 PM
Wei-Min Shen and other researchers from the USC Polymorphic Robotics Lab have been looking for a way to simulate zero-g robotics so they can develop autonomous robots that can assemble orbiting solar power stations and do other useful work in space. Their solution? Small robots called "pucks" that hover on a conventional air-hockey table. A new Nature article summarizes their work. The USC PRL website offers video of the puck robots at work including pucks assembling scale girders (MPEG), docking with each other (MPEG), and autonomously navigating (MPEG).
