Second Life As The Virtual Campus

Second Life As The Virtual Campus 09/24/2004 09:47 AM
While some professors don't like students using the internet or chatting during class, it looks like a few are going in the opposite direction -- using the virtual game environment Second Life as a virtual classroom. The article discusses a professor who uses it in a "Games for the Web" class, which makes sense, obviously. However, another professor using it, teaches an urban planning class. Of course, Second Life creator Linden Labs is perfectly thrilled to give out free accounts to students in the belief that many will become subscribers at the end of the class.

I'm going to be on Your Mac Life tonight, to talk about Just A Geek, my iBook woes (and what looks like a very positive resolution to said woes), and some other geeky goodness.

Details on the show, like how you can listen and stuff, are in the link above.

As I did last time I was on the radio, I'll probably update this entry with a running critique of my performance.

(a) kicking ass; and (b) kicking my ass. Regular Lockergnome operations were suspended last week while we did a little spring cleaning. Turns out, there's more dust under the couch than previously anticipated. That, and we've decided to go out and buy new pieces of furniture. Oh, yes... and it's not spring. I've been so caught up in the maze of my personal and professional lives, that I completely forgot about the hour gain this weekend. I look out the window now and see California smoke, but those fires rival these which are burning in my own little world. "I'd drown apart from that which I learned to live without." My poetry is back with a vengeance....

Life Changes

So now it probably all makes sense why my posting habits here have declined to a mockable all-time-low.

If I had posted more frequently, my entries would have most likely been about the amount of stress I was under or how tired I was from working. And, if i posted that, I'm sure a number of you would have thought "what the hell is she talking about? Movable Type can't be that hard to develop."

And, if I had ignore the self-embargo I had placed on myself not to speak about work, I feared that not only I would have said too much but I would have also created a public record of my weaknesses -- something that I was sure would come to haunt me some day.

So I wrote the sort of posts that kept me in a pre-TypePad, pre-funding state of mind. What you see in my archives from the past few months represents almost all thoughts I've had that relate to my for-public-consumption life. The fact that I've forked has been incredibly difficult to reconcile in dollarshort.org and I'm so terribly happy that, with this announcement, I'm living an secret-free existence.

We write weblogging tools because we believe in the medium. At some point, the writer has to choose what they can and can not disclose in public. Some of this has to do with strategy and some of it has to do with legalities. Weblogging is amazing because you can read the thoughts of a newly-minted CEO and understand, with one post, what has been going through her mind for the past couple months.

That's a power that we can't take for granted.

One of the best days of her life

One of the best days of her life 06/01/2004 11:58 AM
On Sunday I had a special date with my seven year old second cousin, McKenna. We planned to go clamming together, that is, dig up clams on the beach at low tide. (And then take them home and eat them!) The day broke clear and warm, a slight breeze but nothing too chilling. We sat in the sun as we awaited the low tide in the early afternoon. And as 1 PM neared, we climbed into the pickup truck with our rakes, basket, and brand new rubber gloves and headed to the western end of the island. Our destination was a small strip of land inside Madaket Harbor called Jackson's Point (here's a map of west Nantucket, we went right above the "E" on the map). We arrived to find the beach deserted, not only of people but of the soft-shelled clams (aka "steamers") we'd hope to dig up. The sand was littered with empty scallop shells as we began our explorations. Soon we happened upon clusters of mussels all wrapped together in sand, mud, and grass and we changed our plan. Mussels it would be! We gathered about three pounds as we explored the beach at low tide. In addition to mussels, we found a knobbed whelk (the whelk was still inside the shell) and the cutest little hermit crab. We watched sea gulls catch and eat crabs on the beach and collected some shells. And after it was all done, we drove into town for an ice cream cone. More than once McKenna said to me, "Meghan, this has been one of the best days of my life!" And you know what? It was a really special one for me too. That night, McKenna and I steamed the mussels for the rest of our family. Since we didn't have any white wine, we substituted beer instead. Everyone agreed the mussels were delicious. If you like mussels, why not try McKenna and Meghan's Mussels next time you're preparing some.
