Flat-Screen Makers Face Patent Lawsuits
in U.S.
03/14/2005 06:26 PMTwo industrial manufacturers, Guardian Industries Corp. and Honeywell
International Inc., have sued dozens of companies in the global PC and
video display businesses in a U.S. federal court to try to recoup
royalties on liquid-crystal technology. Guardian Industries, a maker
of industrial glass, and Honeywell, known for making weapons systems,
assert in filings in the U.S. District Court in Delaware that their
intellectual property for liquid crystal displays, used in notebook
computers, TVs, and cellular phones, have been infringed.
Taiwan and South Korea are the two primary centers of LCD production,
which is growing rapidly as demand for LCD-based televisions rises.
The lawsuits target the LCD industry directly, but also assert claims
against companies that incorporate LCDs into final electronic
products. Jin Kim, the director LCD market research for research firm
DisplaySearch, said the LCD business largely avoided patent lawsuits
through its earlier years, but has attracted litigants as the business
blossomed into a $40 billion market.

Canon and Toshiba join for flat screen
partnership
09/14/2004 07:32 AMCanon and Toshiba announced today that they would be launching a
partnership worth $1.82 billion to produce the next generation of
flat-panel display screens - Surface Conduction Electron Emitter
Displays, or SED for short. The two companies have been conducting
research on the technology since 1999.
SEDs are thinner that existing flat-screens are more power efficient,
and do not require a back light (LCDs do). The companies will begin
making SED panels for TVs in 2005. Currently, the pair is the only
major companies developing SED panels, a fact unsurprising due to the
massive investment costs involved. Toshiba will be using SED
technology for TVs over 32" in size, with LCD technology being
used for sizes below that.
Analysts DisplaySearch predict the flat-screen market to be worth ~
$97 billion in 2008, up from ~40 billion last year. Currently, the
pair has no plans to license out the technology to other companies.

sorts, one entrepreneur sells the inevitable $15 John Kerry

tchotchkes abound here. There are flip-flop playing cards. Little

delegates having fun with the Kerry "flip-flop" cliche at this
convention have run into a snag: Their own candidate, sold everywhere
here as "resolute," "steady," and "decisive," can't seem to figure out
whether we can win the "war on terror."
