Tell the world (especially the hiring
manager) you’re a team player
09/24/2004 03:59 AM

Being a team player is one of the most important attributes you can bring to a job. Team players are open-minded; they see other points of view and are willing to help others in their efforts to achieve goals. How do you get it across in the interview that you are a team player without it taking away from your value as an individual? In this article, Medzilla offers insight about how to strike that balance of letting potential employers know that you are valuable as an individual and a team player. [PRWEB Sep 24, 2004]

Automating The Hiring Manager

Automating The Hiring Manager 06/01/2004 02:43 AM
Computerized job screening technology has been popular in the casino and hotel industry for some time, but now it appears that many more retail outlets are mak ing all job applicants fill out a computer questionnaire first, which does a first pass filter on whether or not they're worth pursuing. Some stores are even setting up kiosks in the store for job applicants - and if a good one comes by, they may page the manager to grab them before they can get out the door. Meanwhile, some other stores are relying on the technology even after they've hired people to help track their progress and monitor their work. Now all we need is the computer to decide who should be fired (and maybe have it send an email or SMS with the bad news) and people really will be working for the machine...

Engadget: Sony’s Network Walkman NW-HD1 - the world’s smallest 20GB ATRAC3 player. "The Network Walkman is supposed to be able to get an astounding thirty hours of battery life on a single charge." Dell has been advertising "twice the battery life of iPod" on the radio lately, but the fast talk at the end of the commercial says they assume 64kbps files. Most people probably have 128kbps files on their iPods, so the Dell DJ probably accesses the hard disk half as often -- voila, twice the battery life. And if you use 48kbps audio, like Sony does, then you get three times the iPod's battery life -- around 30 hours. When everybody's using the same parts, the only way to get a 2x or 3x advantage is to cheat.

We're Hiring an Editor

We're Hiring an Editor 04/04/2005 08:19 AM

Except for the daily thoughts of suicide and irreparable liver and lung damage, I've had a great time as editor of Gizmodo over the last year. But if I keep up on this schedule—no vacation, ridiculous hours, no sick days—I'm going to have to find something more substantial to suck the life out of than children. I've been looking for a full-time editor to help with the site, but haven't had much luck so far. I've been hesitant to post something on the site, because historically, along with a lot of quality submissions, it's also been an excuse for all the people who AIM me in the middle of day asking me if the "PSP cn ply moviez" to try to fool me into giving them free electronics to review. That said, I know out there among the readership is a person who knows gadgetry in specific and technology in general like the back of their hand, can write their way out of a paper bag, and is full of excitement about working for an editor who is increasingly fed up with the pointless tail-chasing and money-grubbing hypocrisy of the worldwide technology market and takes out his impotent internet rage on real-life subordinates.

If that sounds like an awesome time, I'll explain what you need to do after the jump.

Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules

Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules
09/13/2004 02:14 PM
USA Today is claiming that the rules have changed for resumes, now that they're mostly sent via email instead of snail mail. However, when they get into the details, they sound amazingly like the "rules" many of us learned back in the days before you emailed resumes: focus on results from previous jobs (read: throw in lots of useless percentages to make it look like you improved something), use "descriptive or significant terms" (read: make sure you include the BS buzzwords-of-the-moment to make it through that first pass filter), don't send the wrong cover letter to the wrong company (read: don't be completely stupid), and don't apply "above your skill level" (read: don't waste HR's time so much). I remember hearing all of these years ago as well, and they don't seem any different in this "new age of electronic resumes" as the article would have you believe. Then, of course, there's the biggest recommendation for this supposed new age: they suggest you spam as many companies as possible. Again, has there ever been a time when people were told to send out fewer resumes? If anything, it seems like this strategy is the wrong strategy in the digital age where HR folks are so inundated with resumes that some have found that going back to paper resumes is much more effective in getting attention.
