Time Warner Auditing AOL
Time Warner Auditing AOL
07/29/2004 01:45 PMTime Warner Inc. has launched an internal investigation to determine
whether America Online improperly accounted for losses at its European
division before and after the AOL-Time Warner merger in 2001, the
media giant disclosed yesterday. During the period in question, AOL
Europe posted significant losses that Dulles-based America Online did
not incorporate in its own financial results, according to public
filings. Time Warner said it may have to restate earnings as a result
of its review.
The bookkeeping under scrutiny involved the sale of a small stake in
AOL Europe to Goldman Sachs Group, which temporarily reduced AOL's
ownership in AOL Europe to below 50 percent, according to a recent
article in Business Week. Since it was no longer a majority
stockholder, AOL reported AOL Europe's results separately from its
own. The maneuvers may have helped AOL keep its earnings and stock
price up prior to its January 2001 merger with Time Warner, the
article said. AOL eventually repurchased the stake from Goldman to
again become the majority shareholder.

Time Warner Says You Can Start Over
Again
12/24/2004 12:18 PMA year and a half ago Time Warner (or AOL Time Warner, at the time)
ditched their relationship with TiVo to work on their
own
TiVo killer. The idea, called MystroTV, was that all of the
functionality would be handled at the datacenter, but those using
digital cable could watch
any show from the previous two weeks
of programming at any time. Of course, there were a number of folks
in the broadcasting industry who didn't want that to happen and put
some pressure on Time Warner. Also, there were some huge technology
hurdles to overcome. As a replacement for that, it appears that Time
Warner's cable division is about to start testing a greatly slimmed
down version of this technology that will let users
"start over" any show
that they turn on in the middle. There aren't many details, but
the idea is that as you turn on the TV, if it's already in the middle
of a program, you can simply hit the "start over" button, and the show
will pick up from the beginning. Again, there are some technical
challenges to this (and it may still raise questions from content
companies, of which Time Warner has a division who might not be happy
as well). It also seems like a fairly weak response to a typical DVR
which gives you much more functionality.

Six Apart doesn't want webl0g
professionals to talk about money on the
professional network
09/01/2004 10:45 PMSix Apart President Mena Trott announced the Six Apart professional
network yesterday, using these words: If you're interested in making
money with weblogs, making cool tools, or just making your work with
weblogs easier, the Professional Network is designed for you. Well, as
Adam Smith famously said: People of the same trade seldom meet
together even for merriment and diversion, but the conversation ends
in a conspiracy against the public or some contrivance to raise
prices. so it wasn't surprising when the some of the first posts to
the new Six Apart professional network mailing list were about how
much to charge for doing Movable Type work for clients. Six Apart's
response? Anil posted a list FAQ which said in part: discussions of
specific costs or rates for services, details of legal contracts or
obligations, or human resources issues are not appropriate for the
list1 If weblog professionals can't use the professional network to
talk about how to make money from MovableType, what kind of network is
it? Other than technical details, what else would weblog professional
talk about? Why is are some of the most popular medical journals those
that concern themselves with Medical Economics. While I am not arguing
that Six Apart should be helping people fix prices, if you are going
to set up a network for professionals to make money, the professionals
have to be able to talk about how to make money. I'm sorry if it seems
like I am picking on Six Apart in general or Anil in particular --
some would say that it is like shooting baby squirrels in a barrel.
I'm not trying to. I really wish them the best. But I wish they would
stop going out of their way to make it so easy for their detractors to
find fault with them, or so hard for their friends to defend them. 1
Defying weblog conventions, but respecting Anil's wishes, I haven't
linked directly to the mailing list postings or the FAQ, by they are
readily viewable with a little digging on Six Apart's website....
