TV content aggregation is not a business for network operators, who will do better to form partnerships with satellite and cable operators to sell TV over broadband. Gross margins on TV can be as low as 20% but operators need TV services to compete with triple-play competitors. Fixed broadband (BB) operators providing TV reduce the net present value (NPV) of their business model over the first five years, according to Analysys calculations for this report. Gambling games are the most profitable entertainment option for network operators. [PRWEB Sep 24, 2004]

Broadband wireless could disrupt 3G,
says Analysys
12/19/2004 03:09 PM
Business case for broadband wireless access (BWA) technologies requires mobility to get beyond low-margin fixed Internet access. Broadband wireless technologies forced to compete in the same space as 3G to avoid being marginalised as niche fixed access solutions. Systems available now from Flarion, IPWireless and ArrayComm all offer mobility and will be joined by WiMAX (802.16) and MobileFi (802.20). Vendors still face big challenges in selling to mobile operators as a result of unsubstantiated performance and costs, lack of integration with cellular base stations and limited availability of spectrum. Early commercial business models are delivering only one percent of the revenue per Mbyte of traditional cellular voice and messaging services. WiMAX and MobileFi must learn from early propositions to define winning service propositions and operator business models. Report assesses the true capabilities of, and prospects for, a range of alternative mobile wireless technologies. [PRWEB Dec 16, 2004]

Despite a three-year head start, satellite TV providers will lose their DVR edge over cable companies by 2006, according to Internet-Based Video Services, a new white paper from research firm Parks Associates.Although satellite companies began offering DVRs as early as 1999, they will not be able to overcome the advantages cable companies have in offering a complete bundle of fully integrated services. Parks Associates forecasts that, as a result, over one-half of all DVRs deployed by service providers in 2006 will come from the cable MSOs. [PRWEB Aug 2, 2004]

Acacia Technologies, which says it owns streaming video, sued porn companies last year over the technology. Now it's cable TV's turn.

Acacia Gets Cocky - Sues Satellite And

Acacia Gets Cocky - Sues Satellite And
Cable Companies
06/15/2004 06:24 PM
It looks like patent hoarding company Acacia is getting a bit cocky these days. Last year, the company made a lot of news for getting a questionable patent on "streaming media" and then suing porn sites, since they knew people wouldn't pay as much attention to them. Many sites felt the need to pay up, and Acacia used that war chest to go after bigger companies like Disney. Along the way, they got all excited because a judge upheld their patent rights - but only because no one showed up to contest them. These wins seem to have made Acacia cocky, and they've now decided that any company offering video on demand over cable or satellite services are also violating their patents. Thus, they've sued Comcast, Cox, Charter, DirecTV and EchoStar for violating the patents. These are companies that have a lot of money, and hopefully at least a few of them will stand up to this blatant patent extortion. People have been talking about video-on-demand service for ages. It's not a new concept, and it's unclear (again) how this helps innovation in anyway. Right now, it only looks like it's going to make video-on-demand services more expensive. In fact, Acacia will even tell you how much more expensive: they want $1.25 for every digital cable subscriber with video-on-demand, $1 for every digital cable TV subscriber and $0.50 for every analog cable TV subscriber. If they win, expect to see these charges added to your next bill. Apparently, higher bills count as innovation these days.

Should Cable Broadband Be Regulated At
The State Level?

Should Cable Broadband Be Regulated At
The State Level?
12/22/2003 01:46 PM
The latest Above the Crowd column from Bill Gurley takes a close look at a recent 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision concerning whether or not cable broadband services should be regulated as a telecommunications service by the states. Gurley trashes the ruling (which decided they should be) saying that it goes against what the federal government has made clear as well as against what makes the most sense for the internet. Instead, the only group to benefit from this ruling are the state Public Utility Commissions. Everyone else will suffer. He admits that some say the regulation could increase competitiveness, but points out that DSL is already regulated this way and is losing out to unregulated cable offerings (which are even more expensive). He suggests that the market has already shown that they favor an unregulated solution. I agree with the general premise, but I'm not so sure that the current lead cable has is because their "winning" the competitive battle so much as they've more effectively leveraged their own monopoly. I use cable modem service at home because that was the only choice I had - and no one else has come along to offer a compelling alternative yet. However, because my service is a monopoly, it's treated as such: meaning the customer service is dreadful and the prices keep rising. So far, the DSL providers have had their own problems. The real issue is that neither side is doing much to make consumers happy.

Telcos Falling Farther Behind Cable In
Broadband?

Telcos Falling Farther Behind Cable In
Broadband?
03/24/2005 02:23 PM
The ongoing battle between telcos and cablecos for broadband dominance seems to be one where it's much easier to note the mistakes than the successes. A new report is saying that telcos are falling even further behind cable -- which, if true, would suggest that the telcos have squandered a golden opportunity. It's not clear that it's true, though. Other studies have shown that the cheaper price and aggressive advertising practices by telcos have helpe d them close the gap with cable providers, who were first out of the gate in the US with broadband offerings. Of course, part of the problem is that the telcos still don't trust DSL. They never wanted to offer it to consumers initially, and only did so when they felt forced to by cable offerings -- even if DSL is now w hat's keeping them alive. However, the cheap DSL prices aren' t really that cheap and the forced bundling with local telephone lines makes the problem even worse. People are willing to buy cheap broadband -- but all of the strings attached mean that it's just as easy to go with cable -- the supposedly "expensive" provider. Add into that equation the fact that at least some cable providers are realizing that by offering VoIP for next to nothing they can steal away more telco customers, and the telcos need to do something. Right now, it appears their focus is on fiber , fiber and more fiber -- but it makes you wonder if they really would have been able to get away with denyi ng fiber to certain locations if they didn't get the regulatory changes they wanted. If cable were eating their lunch, suddenly fiber would look better, no matter what the regulatory environment.

Browser Saturation

Browser Saturation 12/24/2004 12:57 PM

I'm curious these days about actual browser saturation statistics. Everyone has a different story.

Boing Boing reported this week that almost half of their visitors are coming in on a Mozilla-based browser. OneStat.com is reporting IE has dipped under 90% for the first time in many, many years. WebSideStory says Firefox market share is up 34% in one month (of course, they claim this is from 3% to 4%...).

W3Schools is reporting Mozilla saturation of over 20%, climbing from just 8% a year ago, but this is just their users, which are often Web developers who are more friendly to Firefox than the Average Joe. Browser News samples five sources, which report Firefox usage rates from 5% to 35%. TheCo unter.com gives Mozilla browsers about 9% in November.

While it seems consistent that Mozilla browsers are definately on the upswing, I'm beginning to think that browser numbers are good for only one site: the site from which the log files were pulled. Everything else is speculation.
