Sony Loses Patent Battle -- Told To Stop

Sony Loses Patent Battle -- Told To Stop
Selling PlayStations In The US
03/28/2005 06:00 AMIf you're familiar with the word "haptics," you're familiar with the
company Immersion. They're the company that seems to own every
possible patent having to do with the haptics space, and any kind of
tactile response or force feedback device usually involves patents
that were first licensed from the company. So, in some ways, it's
pretty impressive that Sony has gotten as far as it has apparently
without licensing patents from the company. A court has found,
however, that Sony's force feedback controllers for the PlayStation
and PlayStation 2 violate Immersion's patents and not only have they
ordered the company to pay $90 million in damages, but also
told Sony it
can no longer sell either console in the US. Sony, of course,
will appeal the ruling, which will allow them to keep selling the
consoles in the meantime. Of course, this is the same Sony that keeps
insisting on
the
importance of stricter intellectual property enforcement to teach
violators a lesson. Funny what comes back to bite you...

Sony ordered to halt PlayStation sales

infringement case
03/28/2005 10:13 AMSony has been ordered to pay over $90 million in damages over a patent
infringement lawsuit and was also issued a permanent injunction
against the manufacture, use, sale, or import into the U.S. of
PlayStation consoles, Dual Shock controllers, and 47 games that
infringe on the patents.
Immersion Corporation was awarded $82.0 million in past damages, along
with pre-judgment interest in the amount of $8.7 million by the court
for the technology Sony used that makes a game controller vibrate in
sync with actions in games.
Sony's gaming unit, Sony Computer Entertainment, plans to appeal the
decision made by the California court on Thursday.

MLB Online Hit With Patent Suit
MLB Online Hit With Patent Suit
09/09/2004 06:33 PMNot sure what the deal is today with companies who have been using
bizarre interpretations of intellectual property to their advantage
suddenly getting hit with intellectual property lawsuits. First, we
had the
RIAA
get sued for patent infringement and now
MLB Online is
getting sued for patent infringement over some patents concerning
the real-time display of game information online. Not surprisingly,
it's a small patent hoarding company rather than a company that is
actually doing any innovating. Of course, MLB.com doesn't exactly
have a sparkling record when it comes to intellectual property
freedom. You may recall that they wanted to stop all other sites from
reporting in-game data (facts) because they seemed to believe
they
owned all the rights to in-game data. Of course, you can't
copyright facts. Once again, though, this lawsuit is unlikely to make
MLB.com realize some of the problems with the way intellectual
property is dealt with these days.

TiVo wins Pause Technology patent suit
Good news for TiVo today as they won a patent suit
against Pause Technology. Pause Technology has a patent on the
functionality of pausing TV, buffering live TV, and catching up to
live by fast-forwarding. It sounds pretty close to what TiVo does, but
a judge sided against Pause. It'll be interesting to see how well TiVo
does in its own patent suits against other DVR manufacturers. [thanks
Scott!]
