Interstate Bakeries files Chapter 11. And with it, an era of American
pop gastronomy may meet its end. To die, to sleep; To sleep: perchance
to dream: ay, there's the carb; For in that sleep of death what
Twinkies may come, when we have shuffled off this mortal Ho-Ho, must
give us pause; there's the respect that makes creme-filled treats of
so long life.

Update: Reader Kate says, "I read your post
on the bankruptcy of the Interstate Bakeries,
alluding to the fact that Twinkies have now met their end. But Chapter
11 bankruptcy is not about ending a company or specific product lines,
but rather re-organizing a companies debts (Link to
explanation). Although its possible that twinkies, ho-ho's and
hostess pies may be gone in the near future, it is just as likely that
they will remain. So in short, reports of Twinkies death have been
greatly exaggerated."
Staci Kramer agrees. "It's not RIP quite yet. The company is
reorganizing -- not liquidating -- and, according to the same Business
Week article mentioned in your post, 'Interstate spokeswoman Maya
Pogoda says the outfit plans to continue operating the rest of its
bakeries and distribution centers.' I just don't want to write off
Twinkies and other delicacies like orange Hostess cup cakes and Devil
Dogs too soon. It would tilt the time-space contiuum."

In an amazing bit of promotion for iRobot (the
company, not the travesty), one of the new Roomba Discoveries has
written a comparison review for San Diego Source, putting an
Electrolux Trilobite and columnist Phil Baker in an head-to-head
deathmatch to answer the home automation question of our time: Can an
$1,800 euro-robot clean floors more effectively than a technology
columnist? Surprisingly, while Phil Baker is almost $1,500 cheaper
than the Trilobite (at $250), his performance stands up fairly
compared to the more expensive model, although he does have a tendency
to leak some dust out of his waste pan when picked up. Score one for
the journos!

Didion on George W. Bush: the NYRB is 40
10/28/2003 11:08 PM It seems slightly scandalous that Krugman has persisted in
noting that the present administration has been moving the lion's
share of the money to an array of corporate interests distinguished by
the greed of their CEOs, an indifference toward their workers, and
boardroom conviction that it is the welfare state that is ruining the
country. Krugman has been strident. He has been shrill. He has lowered
the dignity of the commentariat. How refreshing. Russell

We have now reached
a point when even the White House may be forced to sort out how a

Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci
"I want to read the Notebooks, but there are 1,565 pages and I have
too much else to read.
At a page a day it would take a little over four years, but be
manageable.
Fortunately Project
Gutenberg (who make freely available online out-of-copyright
books) has created a text version of the Notebooks of Leonardo Da
Vinci. You can download
it. It lacks the illustrations of the original, but it's Good
Enough.
Using this site, I can read one page a day using my RSS News
Reader. Find an RSS News Reader. I started at page 1 on May
30th, 2004. I'm now on page 3. You can either read along with me, or
start reading at page 1 today.
Subscribe to one of the following two feeds (copy and paste the URL
into your Reader):

¨ Read with me (starts at page 3): http

I am thoroughly intrigued by this, and my first
thought is how similar this is to what the Chapter-A-Day folks do. Of
course, publishers could also offer this service directly to
readers, but wouldn't it be great if libraries did? Or if we start
providing RSS feeds of new materials from our catalogs, what if we
could also provide the first paragraph of each book in the
feed?
