One of the things I regretted as HB got older was that I didn't really have many puppy pictures to remember him as a fuzzy and playful puppy. It's easy to forget so many of the details of a life that I've had to slowly relearn all the things I had forgotten about puppies in 13 years. I noticed I had a bunch of pictures from the breeder as well as some other photos of Otava's first few months and decided to mark his upcoming 20-week milestone with a small collection of photos of Otava from 1 week to 19 weeks old. I've not been out with friends in nearly 2 months, he rarely lets me relax on the couch in the evening, his teeth are making him cranky and thusly driving me nuts, but he's an adorable, cuddly little furry monster.

Just how much do you rely on the internet on a daily basis? There are some people who can easily leave the internet completely behind when on vacation. However, what about doing everyday things that you've come to rely on it for? An experiment sponsored by Yahoo had 28 people give up the internet for two weeks to see how they coped. Not everyone took it so well. They increased usage of other media like the telephone, television and movies to replace the missing internet. One couple claims their phone bill tripled. While the lack of email was definitely a nuisance, it was "the little things" that really seemed to get to some. Not being able to get directions online and (the most embarrassing situation, apparently) not knowing how to boil an egg, and having no idea where to go to figure it out seemed to be the biggest problem. Honestly, though, for all the talk about people being "addicted" to the internet, this suggests that's not the case at all for the (small) group of people involved in this experiment. It's just that they find the internet useful in getting random every day tasks done.

After the US government decreed that telecommuti ng is vital to national security, a UK study found that working at home poses a higher security risk. The survey found that telecommuters are more lax with computer security procedures, and therefore expose their companies to computer virus and hacker threats. The survey also found that employees working at home were distracted by television and lonely. Worker issues are nothing new, whether the workers are sitting in cubes or in their living room. Telecommuting provides a more flexi ble working arrangement enabled by today's technology. Supposedly, "the only way to protect against the growing security threat was for businesses to take the responsibility off home workers". Well, that just seems obvious. If you just sent your workers home and didn't take responsibility for their security, isn't it obvious why there is a security threat? This study seems like an alarmist exercise. Oh wait, the study was done by Novell, who just so happens to sell security software. If only they had a solution for the loneliness and showering problem (though maybe those two problems are actually related).

The folks who run MSN's Hotmail promised to deliver 250 megabytes of free storage to all users. Users who have been checking have been sorely disappointed not to be hearing anything.
