Olympics underway

Olympics underway 08/11/2004 01:25 PM

Just watched the US Women's team defeat Greece 3-0. Five members of the 1991 world cup team are still playing for the US which is pretty impressive -- there aren't a lot of examples in international sports of people remaining competitive for over 13 years.

Tomorrow, Iraq rejoins the Olympics for the first time since 1988 to play soccer against Portugal, which is great to see. On the downside, I'm hearing about a lot of top American athletes ducking out of this year's games (in tennis, basketball, and cycling especially) citing injuries and personal reasons. It's a shame we won't seem them but I'm wondering if part of it is due to concerns about attacks or violence. I certainly hope the games go smoothly, it seemed a few months ago the only news coming out of Athens was bad news, but today's soccer match seemed to go just fine.

12/05/2003 01:54 PM
Leaders from Intel and Cisco are trying to start up an effort to standardize 802.11 mesh networking : This is a great idea, but one that not surprisingly isn't supported by current developers of mesh networks. Those companies, including Strix, Firetide, and BelAir argue such an effort would be too difficult. They might prefer not to have standards so that customers must buy entire networks from one vendor. Intel apparently is working on a mesh standard that could span 802.11 and ultrawideband networks. That sounds like quite a challenge....

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera
Phone
11/04/2003 07:06 PM
We've had a lot of stories in the last six months or so about shortsighted companies deciding to simply ban camera phones outright. In the past, I wondered if such rules would have an impact on mobile phone sales, but I didn't expect the carriers to jump on this topic so quickly. Put me in the same surprised boat as Alan Reiter to hear that carriers are convincing mobile phone handset makers to offer multiple versions of their phones: one with a camera and the other without. I really thought that with only a few companies overreacting and missing the point about camera phones, it would blow over, and a decade from now we'd be laughing at silly companies banning camera phones. At this rate, that might not be true. This is going to be a huge waste of money. Designing a new phone will take some money, and will create a phone that offers less value to the customer (and less opportunity for revenue for the carrier). However as camera phones begin to find more acceptance in the marketplace, people are going to get angry when their boss tells them the expensive phone they just bought can't be brought into the office. They're not going to want to buy the version without the camera if part of the reason they're upgrading is for the camera in the first place. This is a (costly) over reaction to a technology that will do nothing to stop the real problem (theft of corporate secrets or invasion of privacy), but will cost lots of money and anger many people.

Smoke Day

Smoke Day 06/17/2005 07:11 PM

I smoked today. Actually, I smoked just now with only 31 minutes left in the day. Not really a cigarrete even, more a mini-cigar that was sitting in a forgotten corner of the house until now. So horrible yet so comfortable. I've been on nicotine candy for the past three months and haven't been able to get off it. That's not really quitting, more like pausing. And I've been in an irritating state of mind for the past three months. Damn. I feel like a loser. The worst part of smoking these days is the guilt. I don't know if I am back to smoking or not yet. I am taking it one day at a time at this point. For now, allow me this pleasure of hating myself for this self-inflicted wound.

Darin and I stood in Old Town, on the corner of Delacy and Green. It was a magnificent night: eighty degrees, clear skies, the slightest breeze stirring the young leaves on the trees behind us.

The whole area was packed with people who were taking advantage of the unseasonably warm March evening: families and young couples crowded the sidewalks, as a nearly-full moon slowly climbed the Eastern sky.

"Hey, what are you doing tomorrow?" I said.

"Getting the tires changed on my Jeep." He said.

"Want to get together and have a cigar? I haven't had a cigar in months, and I'd like to take advantage of the warm weather."

Just when you think you've got the hang of preserving the delicate papers of historic documents, along comes electronic parchment -- as fragile as the real thing because rapidly changing technologies can render its content as unreadable as crumbing paper records. What's a government archive to do with the electronic records of, say, active military folks who will need documentation in 30 years to claim veterans' benefits or Food & Drug Administration records that document adverse reactions to drugs -- long after today's hardware and software are replaced by unimaginable innovations? The U.S. National Archives & Records Administration is in the midst of a plan to archive millions -- billions -- of electronic government documents "so that anyone, anywhere, anytime, far into the future, can access these records with the technology in use then," says outgoing NARA director John W. Carlin. In addition to making a great leap forward in government archiving, he predicts the new products and processes will benefit other archivists -- including colleges and universities, libraries and archives, small businesses and large corporations. The first installment of an operational ERA is scheduled to be up and running in 2007.
