On the GUI Selection in UserLinux
On the GUI Selection in UserLinux
12/15/2003 08:04 PMIn the original UserLinux white paper, I made it clear that the
project would play favorites among the software choices available to
it, and that the resulting process would be painful. You can't say
that you weren't warned. But it turns out not to be particularly
painful, except for one issue: the selection of the GUI used in the
system. The selection of GNOME as the GUI of the UserLinux project has
raised a good deal of opposition from KDE supporters.
Unnatural Selection
Unnatural Selection
02/01/2005 10:05 PMAn MIT
Technology Review article offers a good introduction to the use of
evolutionary algorithms for hardware design. By replacing natural
selection with a user-defined fitness function genetic algorithms use
random mutation and recombination of the most fit designs to produce
continually better designs. The article includes plenty of real-world
examples of the results including
"a corkscrew contraption small
enough to fit in a wine glass, yet able to send a wide-beam radio wave
from space to Earth. It resembles nothing any sane radio engineer
would
build on her own." The article also touches on John von Neumann's
"complexity barrier" and the origins of genetic algorithms in the
1950s.

Automotive Bloggers and Writers, Ahoy!
07/30/2004 07:07 AMSo hey, we've got a couple of interesting opportunities coming up
around here for bloggers, and I thought I'd pass along word. The first
is that we're looking for someone who is an absolute car nut --
someone like me, but who actually follows the whole industry, not just
the part where you crash them into walls -- and who knows how to blog,
play nice with others, and write fantastic dick jokes (Choire
says that's optional, but I know the truth). If you're interested,
send an email with a writing sample (or even better, a link to your
blog) to Choire@Google mail.
The other opportunity is on Gizmodo, and I'll talk about it after
the jump.

Barrett Jackson Automotive Auction
Barrett Jackson Automotive Auction
01/04/2005 06:02 PMSpeaking of vehic
ular insanity, my cube-mate was browsing through Barrett-Jackson's listing of
888 drool-worthy machines, all going on the auction block
this month. Barrett-Jackson is one of the nation's biggest automotive
auction houses, specializiing in collectible iron. I'm told their
auction is a regular feature on SpeedTV. Piles of hi-res
photos of the cars are available.
My favorite? Hard to pick, but the 1965 Shelby Cobra Roadster and the 1954 Oldsmobile F-88 Concept Car are right
up there. Honorable mention goes to the 1955 Messerschmitt KR-200 2 Door Bubble
Top. (ok, so I would't be caught dead driving that one, but it
sure is cute!)

Xoxide and Link Selection
07/01/2004 03:56 PMXoxide: So, here's our
first LinkWorth
advertiser, and the process of getting this one up was
eye-opening.
At the risk of sounding like a shill, approving this link was kind
of a no-brainer. Click around their store for a while and you'll see
what I mean — I was like a kid in a candy store here. I'm not a
case modder at all, but they have some insanely cool stuff for
sale.
I have two other links pending, which I'm trying to evalulate right
now. The questions I'm asking myself are (1) are there any reasons I
shouldn't link to them? Do they have crappy service? Are they
deceptive in anyway? Are a lot of people ranting about how they
suck?
And (2), is there any reason I really should link to them?
Are they cool in some way? If I weren't getting paid, would I make a
blog entry about them? (With Xoxide, I think I can answer "yes" to
that question, given the stuff Joe pointed out over there.)
This is the harder question, because I have a pending link that
isn't objectionable in any way, but it's just....well, kind of blah.
It's an example of someone trying to force a business model that's
probably not going to happen. I'm not sure it really adds any value
to the Internet as a whole.
(Another question: why don't I get this uptight about the Google
ads? Probably because I have no control over them. I have plausible
deniability there. With LinkWorth, however, I'm proactively making
the decision to include the link, and that's a little harder.)
Am I being naive here? Is the hope of accepting paid links
—but only good paid links — at all realistic? I
don't know, but stay tuned and I'll keep you informed about how it
works out.
