Screenshot Monit is a utility for managing and monitoring processes, files, directories, and devices on a Unix system. It conducts automatic maintenance and repair and can execute meaningful causal actions in error situations. It can be used to monitor files, directories, and devices for changes, such as timestamps changes, checksum changes, or size changes. It is controlled via an easy to configure control file based on a free-format, token-oriented syntax. It logs to syslog or to its own log file and notifies users about error conditions via customizable alert messages. It can perform various TCP/IP network checks, protocol checks, and can utilize SSL for such checks. It provides an HTTP(S) interface for access.
Changes:
In this release, the HTTP(S) connection tests can be specified using the familiar URL syntax. The HTTP test has also been updated to follow redirect responses from a HTTP server and authenticate using Basic Authentication if specified. The test is also extended to allow for testing content returned by a Web server. POSIX regular expressions are supported in this test. This release also adds NTP and apache-status (mod_status) protocol tests and include a number of bugfixes.

Screenshot Nagios (formerly Netsaint) is a daemon written in C that is designed to monitor networked hosts and services. It has the ability to notify contacts (via email, pager or other methods) when problems arise and are resolved. Host and service checks are performed by external "plugins", making it easy to write custom checks in your language of choice. Several CGIs are included in order to allow you to view the current and historical status via a Web browser, and a WAP interface is also provided to allow you to acknowlege problems and disable notifications from an internet-ready cellphone.
Changes:
Fixes were made to macro processing, the sample config files, the init script, and documentation. Several segfaults were fixed.

Nagios Plugins 1.4 is released

Nagios Plugins 1.4 is released 02/05/2005 09:55 PM
The Nagios Plugins team is proud to announce that Nagios Plugins 1.4 is released. Nagios (http://nagios.org) is the leading open source monitoring system, created by Ethan Galstad. But for Nagios to monitor effectively, it requires the Nagios Plugins - we provide all the intelligence to work out exactly what is the status of your server or network so that you will know the availability and performance of your services before anyone else. In addition to all the standard server checks, like load, swap and disk, the plugins also checks webservers, databases (Oracle, Mysql, Postgres), DNS, mail servers, Netware and Citrix amongst many others. This release includes major enhancements. With the growth of internet enabled devices, the IPv4 addressing range will be used up soon. Jeremy T Bouse has integrated IPv6 support into our networking utilities, so you can now monitor your next generation network. Karl DeBisschop has incorporated GNU df into our disk checks, so we are leveraging the great work done by the GNU coreutils team. Karl has also added internationalisation support to most of our plugins. French and German translations, provided by Benoit Mortier and Michael Wirtgen, are delivered as standard now and the framework is available for more languages in future. Most plugins now provide performance data for graphing by external applications, like PerfParse (http://www.perfparse.org), so you can see how well your services are working. The team has done a great job in fixing bugs and incorporating lots of requests from our users. This includes efforts from Stanley Hopcroft and Subhendu Ghosh, as well as our newest recruits, Matthew Kent and Harper Mann. And thanks must go to our community who have actively provided lots of patches and bug reports, as well as new plugins, of which check_icmp and check_dhcp are now included by default. Download release 1.4 from http://sourceforge.net/projects/nagiosplug/ and let us know how well it works for you.

Novell Announces Enhancements for
GroupWise

Novell Announces Enhancements for
GroupWise
03/30/2005 01:58 PM
Novell announced an extended support policy, new product features and a no-cost, pre-bundled SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server for the next version of Novell GroupWise, due later this year.

“GroupWise is head and shoulders above Microsoft Exchange, and we are very pleased with Novell's ongoing commitment,” said Steve O’Brien, director of IT operations for Jefferson County, Colo. “My peers describe problems with their Exchange e-mail systems that I don't even think about. Because we implemented Linux and open source solutions from Novell, we are able to reduce our hardware costs by 50 percent, software costs by 30 percent and administration cost by 30 percent – all while improving uptime and overall security."

Novell recently announced its long-term plans for GroupWise. The next release, codenamed “Sequoia,” is planned to be released in the summer of 2005, followed by “Aspen” and “Cedar,” targeted for fall 2006 and spring 2008, respectively. Planned enhancements for Sequoia include enhanced client code for Windows*, Macintosh*, Linux* and the Web, support for Microsoft Outlook*, and new SOAP/XML interfaces to support integration of GroupWise with services-oriented application architectures. An additional facet of Novell's long-term commitment to GroupWise is Novell's extension of the support window for GroupWise through 2015.

Novell will also pre-bundle SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server with GroupWise Sequoia at no additional cost. Long known for its security benefits, SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9 recently achieved Enterprise Assurance Level 4+ under the Common Criteria for Information Security Evaluation's Controlled Access Protection Profile, also referred to as CAPP/EAL4+. The increased security and reliability of SUSE LINUX enable customers to deploy GroupWise with even more confidence.
