Porn Site Suing Credit Card Companies
Because That's Where The Money Is
01/29/2004 02:49 AMIt's no secret that pornographic pictures from one porn site quickly
get copied to plenty of other porn sites. It seems that one porn site
is taking an interesting strategy in trying to deal with this issue.
Instead of going after those who copied the pictures, they've decided
to
sue the credit card companies that process payments for
the sites that have copied their photos. The official reasoning is
that they're suing the credit card companies for copyright
infringement because the credit card companies are profiting off of
the transactions on these other sites. That these credit card
companies haven't actually infringed on any copyrights doesn't seem to
enter the picture. This is, of course, the typical response to the
"who do you sue?" question. The answer is always "the company with
the most money" - even if that company hasn't actually
done
anything wrong.

Public Or Private Info?
Is The Contact Info You Provide Someone
Public Or Private Info?
02/10/2004 05:32 PMI've complained in the past about the
annoyanc
e of Plaxo spam. Lately, the more I've been thinking about Plaxo,
the more it annoys me. Though I've never had anything to do with the
company, and have never responded to a single spam, they now have a
database with my contact info that others gave it. Bambi Francisco
over at CBS Marketwatch has
noticed the same thing with Spoke Software, which she
finds disconcerting. However, I'm wondering about the bigger legal
issues: is the personal info you've given to individuals for business
or personal reasons shareable? Some say that all Spoke is doing is
collecting
public information. However, if the info was given to an
individual, is there a reasonable expectation that the information is
not public at all, but for private use only? I'm not sure what the
answer is, but I wonder how long until there's a lawsuit around this
issue. Personally, like so many other things, I don't think it's
something you can get "back in the box," but these systems do reveal
to me who is freely giving away personal information about me, which
could make me less willing to do business with them in the future.

IE Pop-Up Spoof Won't Get Patched
IE Pop-Up Spoof Won't Get Patched
06/24/2005 08:20 PM Microsoft does not plan to update Internet Explorer to prevent a
spoofing attack that could trick users into giving out personal
information to hackers.
In the attack, JavaScript is used to display a
pop-up window in
front of a trusted Web site. The pop-up appears to be part of the
legitimate site, but actually is linked to a different, malicious
site. A user might be fooled into sending personal information to the
scammers. Although the pop-ups could be used by attackers, overlaying
multiple windows in a Web browser is a feature, not a vulnerability,
according to
an advisory posted
Tuesday on Microsoft's TechNet Web site.
"This is an example of how current standard Web browser
functionality could be used in phishing attempts," Microsoft said
in the advisory.
Phishing is a prevalent type of
online fraud that attempts to steal sensitive information such as
usernames, passwords and credit card numbers. The schemes typically
combine spam e-mail and fraudulent Web pages that look like legitimate
sites.

01/16/2004 11:33 AM So, the Club for Growth runs this ridiculously nasty commercial that
slips into self-parody as a couple says: "I think Howard Dean should
take his tax-hiking, government-expanding, latte-drinking,
sushi-eating, Volvo-driving...[etc.] freak-show back to Vermont." The
Dean blog responds by posting the ad and a new version with dubbed
voices so that the couple is now explaining why they're supporting
Dean. It's a totally amateur job, and is intentionally funny because
of that. Now the blog is hosting a make-your-own-postcard page where
you can make your own list of the sort of Dean supporter you are. The
blog notes that...

New, sneaky, evil PayPal spoof.
12/28/2003 06:58 PMMike Outmesguine points us
to yet another new riff on the classic PayPal scam (click thumbnail
for full-size image):
I got this email that looks like it came from PayPal. Of course, I
didn't believe it for a second. But I'm sure others would. Digging
deeper, the URL redirects people to a site in China that uses the IE
URL spoof to seem like it's sitting at paypal.com. Insidious! I
reported this to Paypal and they confirmed it's a spoof site. Here's
the breakdown:
1. URL included in the original email:
<a href="http://www.paypal.com%01%01%01%01%01%01%

3. Actual site being loaded (remove spaces to activate): www . Epack .

Microsoft has not released a patch for this URL vulnerability. Now it
seems there is a real-world attack, albeit only to Paypal members so
far. Sneaky buggers!
