Another Tapwave Zodiac review

Another Tapwave Zodiac review 11/14/2003 04:03 PM
Another review of the new Zodiac, Tapwave's Palm PDA designed specifically for playing games, this one by Mike Langberg of the San Jose Mercury News. Like almost everyone else who seems to have gotten their hands on one, Mike likes it quite a bit, saying that it has the best screen he's ever seen on a handheld. He does make one good point about the Zodiac though, that there will probably be limited number of top-quality games available to play on it. Since the Zodiac costs a lot more than a Game Boy Advance, Tapwave isn't likely to sell more than a few hundred thousand of them (at best), which is too few for most game developers to bother creating titles that really take advantage of its capabilities. Tapwave Zodiac in Retail 06/18/2004 04:17 PM

zodiacincradle.jpg
The Tapwave Zodiac, the PDA/MP3 player/Game Platform has snuck into the retail channel a few days before its scheduled June 24th ship date. NYC J&R Music and Computer World stores and, by extension, Amazon.com now have both the 32MB and the 128MB models available.

With a nice 480x320 16-bit display, an analog control stick, a mess o' gaming adapted buttons, all running on PalmOS 5.2T, the Zodiac sure looks like a neat PDA for someone with a gaming streak.

Tapwave Zodiac in Stores June 24th 06/10/2004 07:55 AM

compusa_employees.jpg imageMake it or break it time for Tapwave as they confirm a June 24th retail launch date in CompUSA stores for their PalmOS-based gaming PDA Zodiac. Tapland confirms that the Zodiac will have at least a 4-foot dedicated shelf space and a full marketing rollout with all the usual ads and promotions, I would imagine. It's not a CompUSA exclusive, either -- both J&R and Amazon have started dropping information about their intention to carry the Zodiac, as well. I don't have huge hopes for the Zodiac; I hate to be such a fuddy-duddy about it, but I just can't see them blowing up without the support of the major game publishers. Still, if they can capture the Palm purchasers who wouldn't mind playing a game or two on the side, they might be able to carve out a nice little niche for themselves.

tapland_430.jpg imageWhen MTI Micro Fuel Cells decided to show off their 'Mobion' fuel cells, they threw one on the back of a Tapwave Zodiac, which as Tapland's Scott Raulinaitis points out, makes it extremely clear exactly how big these cells will be. I wouldn't mind the size, actually, if MTI could tell us exactly what sort of power time we could expect out of fill-your-own fuel cells. "2 to 10 times longer" is just a little too vague for me. Still, methanol-powered gadgets? Maybe I could start distilling my own at home.

Best Methods For Broadcasting Live Audio
On The Web
12/15/2003 02:26 AM
We don't normally do "Ask Techdirt" type posts, but this is a good question, and Jeremiah Jacobs has been doing very interesting things with online music, which we like to encourage (and has been an active, thoughtful commenter on Techdirt). So, if anyone has some good thoughts, feel free to note them in the comments. Jeremiah writes "Dear Techdirt: What's the best means for "broadcasting" audio via the web? I'm aware of things like Shoutcast, and it's ilk, but I'm in need of something I can use to create a 128k or higher mp3 stream in realtime. The overall concept is that I want to put on sessions where surfers can listen in @ near-CD quality while I compose/mix/screw-off in my studio, with a live audio feed right from my mixing station. The idea being to give people some insight (directly) into the creative process, as they can listen in on actual creative/production sessions. Later on, I want to couple this with a webcam feed, too. I am capable of implementing suggestions in both M$ and Linux environments. Thanks for your suggestions."

It uses an "I/O Map" visual interface that helps audio pros optimize and direct their efforts, rather than relying on more common transfer curves and displays. Neodynium costs US$159 (and is available for $139 for a limited time). It works with Digidesign Pro Tools, Emagic Logic and other software. System requirements call for a G3 or faster with Mac OS X v10.2 or newer and a compatible host application.
