Review: Xserve G5 and Xserve RAID
06/01/2004 12:15 PMFor the past two weeks I have been the proud user of
Apples newest assault on the enterprise: a dual-processor Xserve
G5 and an Xserve RAID, writes Yuval Kossovsky for Computerworld.
For those of you who already have a G4 version of the Xserve,
you will still be in awe of this box. For those who have never had
one, keep a chair handy to faint into. [Jun 1]

Waiting for GPS
Waiting for GPS
01/09/2004 09:53 PM My GPS navigation system should arrive today. I forewent all birthday
and Chanukah gifts from my family in order to build up a fund for the
device, a Garmin 2610. It's a perky little number that sits on your
dash and tells you, in a silky voice that forgives all your
directional transgressions, how to get from A to B. I'm not a
particularly good driver to begin with, but I spend most of almost
every trip trying to envision how the road I'm on links up with the
road I'm trying to get to. The rest of the...

It's All Over Now but the Waiting
It's All Over Now but the Waiting
06/22/2005 02:19 AMI’ve finally been able to post a few things because for the
first time in about three weeks, I’m not spending my nights
working on grants. In Illinois, 2006 LSTA grant submissions were due
Friday, June 17, so it’s all over but the waiting now. Which is
a killer, because I’m very excited about both of the grants MLS
is involved in.
- MLS
submitted a grant to create an online, statewide book discussion group
for audio ebooks called “One State, One Listen” by adding
simultaneous use titles from netLibrary/Recorded Books and OverDrive to ListenIllinois. Of course, I
think it would be totally cool, but we’ll see what the grant
reviewers think.
- MLS is also mentioned as a supporting
agency in the big gaming grant I mentioned last month. Aaron submitted the grant
under the Thomas Ford Memorial
Library, and we ended up with 23 participating libraries out of 35
applicants. Response was incredible, and I’m truly sorry we
couldn’t take every one of them. Everyone that read the grant
loved it, and we have some mighty big plans if we get it. This will
truly be something never before seen in the library
world.
So now we wait until September to hear back. I
don’t want to say much more until then, so light a candle for
us!

Our competition
Oh, and
thanks to Su Bochenski for driving all the way to Springfield to make
sure they were there on Friday before the deadline!

12/27/2004 08:06 PMI've arrived at the Hotel Fundador in Santiago, Chile (free
wireless in the lobby). It is difficult to fault Chileans in the
department of hospitality. One of this Weblog's readers, Jorge
Tambley, picked me up at the airport on Sunday morning and dropped me
off at the hotel. Then he came back a couple of hours later to
invite me to lunch with his wife and kids. Then he took me to
the small airport to hunt for flight schools and onward to the various
neighborhoods of Santiago. Jorge provided some insight into the
world of the Chilean computer programmer. Things seem to be done
on a somewhat smaller scale than in the U.S. The programmer
needs to be more in contact with the client, with the users, and more
aware of business problems and how to solve them. Consulting
rates and real estate prices are in a more favorable ratio than in the
U.S. A top programmer might earn $70/hour and a newly
constructed small condo in Santiago sells for $25,000. A
reasonably nice house is $100,000 and a Las Vegas-style McMansion is
$225,000.
With some very kind assistance from Cristian Levy of Amity Tours
(http://www.amitytours.cl/)
I've begun to sketch out a trip to Valparaiso (Dec 30) and La Serena
plus environs (Jan 2-8).

daylight...

Waiting for SyndiCon I
03/06/2004 01:48 AMSo BloggerCon
II is scheduled to take place on April 17 this year, again in
Boston at Harvard.
Happy: there will be a
session on weblogs and libraries!
Sad: I have no budget to
attend (although I'm really pushing Steven to go).
I'm glad there's a follow-up and that these folks will continue
exploring the impact and potential of blogging, but I'm also ready for
SyndiCon (or AggregatorCon or
whatever you want to call it). As evidenced by Will Richardson's
vision among other things, it's time to take syndication to the
next level - make it more user-friendly, integrate it into other
tools, figure out what users want, and in general
take RSS to the next level. Same types of sessions - education,
politics, business, libraries, journalism, etc.
The RSS
Winterfest was a good start, but it's difficult to
over-emphasize the value of this type of conversation taking
place in-person, face-to-face. In addition, how great would
it be to include an "RSS Hackfest" (led by Andrew Grumet) to get us BitTorre
nt + RSS, authentication, better customization, metadata, and more?!

12/28/2004 05:27 AMI'm tired of waiting. The iPhoto book printing service never did
arrived in Singapore, and I doubt the iTunes Music Store will ever
