AP - College junior Kyle Taylor is downloading hundreds of songs by No Doubt, Bruce Springsteen and others onto the Compaq laptop in his cramped dormitory room. With a few more clicks of his mouse, Taylor is watching commercial-free "Seinfeld" episodes on his computer. In just minutes, he then downloads the entire movie "A League of Their Own." The 20-year-old is not breaking any laws. Nor is he at risk of expensive lawsuits by the entertainment industry over copyright violations.

Checking In On The Dorm For Dreamers

Checking In On The Dorm For Dreamers 12/03/2003 11:06 AM
Last year we had a post about the special dorm for entrepreneurs at the University of Maryland. It's a dorm for students who want to start businesses. The dorm is set up to make it easier for students to run their own businesses, with full wireless connectivity, professional looking conference rooms, offices, white boards, and lots of typical office amenities. They also bring in speakers and have sessions on some of the more important aspects of starting and running your own business. Finally, they encourage students to go off and build the business of their dreams. The Boston Globe now has an article looking at how the program is doing, and it sounds like it's doing great. Lots of companies have been started, and the students seem to love the experience they're getting. They especially seem to enjoy the fact that they get to be around other like-minded students who they can share stories with and learn from. It sounds like there are even more companies this year than last year, and quite a few are making money. Whether or not any of these companies turns into a sustainable business is less important than the experience the students are getting. It will be interesting to see if other universities follow suit.

The potential dancers have to prove they can dance in the nude, immigration lawyer Mendel Green said Monday.

"They can't be partially nude," he said. "If they don't have pictures in the nude, they are not going to wiggle their bottoms in Canada."

College Kids Draining Dorm Electricity
Grids
11/17/2003 04:17 AM
College kids are showing up at school with an increasing number of gadgets and electronics - and they all need power. Universities are discovering that they need to upgrade their electrical systems to provide more power and more outlets per room - and even then they're finding it's sometimes not enough. One study found that an average freshman arrived with 18 electrical gadgets. One director of residences claims that dorm rooms these days look like mini electronics stores. Of course, I don't think this sort of thing is limited to dorm rooms. I'm sure plenty of home users are discovering that they're draining more electricity and using up more outlets than ever before.

Student, teacher punished for bypassing
school's 'net filters
04/05/2005 04:48 PM
Xeni Jardin: A high school student was punished for freeing his fellow websurfing students and teachers from their school's internet content filtering system.
Conrad Sykes, 16, created a Web site that bypassed the district's Internet content filter, which was hampering student research, the student said. Sykes said he did this so students could access research sites - but it also allowed students to visit adult sites or others that the school district intends to screen out. Sykes' site was so successful that many Spokane Public School students - and people from as far away as Alabama and Pennsylvania - used it thousands of times between Dec. 14 and Feb. 22.

Sykes was even asked by his computer teacher, Wes Marburger, to make a presentation to other classes on the number of visitors to his Web site. The district filter is called Bess, and a dog is in the logo.

In the end, Sykes was suspended for two days in February for violating school computer use policies. His teacher was given a written reprimand and removed from teaching computer classes. The state Office of Professional Practices is now investigating and could potentially take away Marburger's teaching certificate.
