Sony will support MP3 in portable
digital music players
09/23/2004 11:15 AM

Xeni Jardin: Sony confirmed yesterday that it plans to add native MP3 support to digital music players, in a move that will likely help the products compete more effectively with more popular competitors like Apple's iPod. Until now, the Sony devices were designed to only play files encoded with Sony's proprietary Atrac music file format.

The shift from reliance on its proprietary format will begin with flash memory-based players, the electronics giant said, but plans are still being finalized on how and when products will add MP3 support. CNET News.com affiliate ZDNet France first reported of the change in Sony's strategy for the European market. U.S. representatives said the company is making similar plans here.

AMD chips in for portable video players

AMD chips in for portable video players 01/04/2005 11:03 AM
AMD has developed a low-power chip that it thinks will make portable video players more compelling by reducing the time needed to transfer content to the devices. The company is expected to announce the chip at CES (the International Consumer Electronics Show) this week. Portable video players with the new Alchemy Au1200 processor will play Mpeg files recorded by digital video recorders, eliminating the need for users to change those files to a different format, a spokeperson says. AMD has designed a reference platform for manufacturers that includes the chip and media player software, and the company expects devices to emerge in the second quarter of this year.

Panasonic D-snap Audio Portable Players

Panasonic D-snap Audio Portable Players 03/19/2005 02:45 AM

portable_panasonic.jpg image

Panasonic introduced a few portable audio players yesterday that we forgot to mention (although they leaked way back in October), in the "D-snap Audio" line. We'll start with the "SV-SD100V" and "SV-SD90" square-shaped players with SD card slot (and only an SD card slot). They also have a mirrored organic EL display, and compatibility with MP3, WMA and AAC. In fact, the SV-SD100V throws in an FM tuner and voice recorder.

Also announced were the "SV-MP720V" and "SV-MP730V." Their interesting "two block" design actually won Panasonic a design award. The two units vary only in capacity, color variations and price. Both are MP3 and WMA compatible and have an FM tuner/voice recorder you probably won't ever use. A sort of disappointing 10-hour battery life on these.

Two S-Media Portable Video Players:
JoyToGo and Black Diamond

Two S-Media Portable Video Players:
JoyToGo and Black Diamond
06/08/2004 07:31 AM

smedia_joytogo_bd.jpg imageDAPReview has shots of a couple of small, hard drive-based video players, both with planned release dates around September. The first is the JoyToGo (pictured left, and which I could have sworn we'd seen before, but Google says otherwise), built around either a 20 or 30GB 1.8" hard drive, with a 480 x 234 2.5" LCD screen, as well as built-in speakers and SD slot. It will also allow direct recording of video in MPEG-4 at rates of 640x480 at 25fps -- not bad, consider that's larger than its own screen.

And even though it's only a mock-up at the moment, I can't help but be excited by the 'Black Diamond' player, built around a tiny 1" hard drive with an as-yet-unspecified capacity. It only has a 294 x 228 resolution (with the same 2.5" screen size as the JoyToGo), and no speakers or anything like that, but if they could bump the resolution of the Black Diamond up to 480 x 234, I would be happy -- honored, even -- to carry around the little player in my pocket.

Both players are from S-Media, the makers of the moderately successful CoCoPod hard disk player.
