Microsoft to secure IE for XP only.

Microsoft to secure IE for XP only. 09/23/2004 09:10 AM

If you're one of about 200 million people using older versions of Windows and you want the latest security enhancements to Internet Explorer, get your credit card ready. Microsoft this week reiterated that it would keep the new version of Microsoft's IE Web browser available only as part of the recently released Windows XP operating system, Service Pack 2. The upgrade to XP from any previous Windows versions is $99 when ordered from Microsoft. Starting from scratch, the OS costs $199.

Microsoft to use Longhorn to secure Web

Microsoft to use Longhorn to secure Web 03/28/2005 11:01 AM
MICROSOFT will tackle the growing fear of identity theft in its upcoming version of Windows, codenamed Longhorn, with a technology it calls ‘info-cards’, the Wall Street Journal reported today. The scheme bears a resemblance to the Passport scheme Microsoft tried reasonably unsuccessfully to introduce to its online services like MSN and Hotmail, as it relies on users being willing to hand over their personal data to 'trusted' companies. Info-cards, said the Journal, will allow users to "selectively disclose information about themselves to businesses or others online". The software will store users’ personal information such as credit-card numbers or phone numbers and allow data to be transferred in an encrypted form "that can be decoded only by trusted Web sites".

A number of security bodies and industry experts, including the US government-backed CERT, and non-profit Sans Institute, have urged companies to consider Microsoft alternatives. These include Netscape, Opera, Mozilla and Apple's Safari.

Richard Brain, technical director at security consultant ProCheckup, said: "It is a good idea to use other, safer browsers like Firefox by default, and the more complex, buggy Internet Explorer to access those sites which will only work with IE. "IE is an overly complex bit of software that should really get back to its simpler roots as a web browser, so that Microsoft developers can simplify it and remove its security holes," he said

Secure UI: Phishmarking

Secure UI: Phishmarking 02/16/2004 04:08 PM

This post describes variations of an idea that reduce the vulnerability discussed in Visual Spoofing and Visual Illusions posts.

Below is an example of a phishing attempt using the visual spoofing techinque (clickthrough to see it fully).  It shows a browser window containing an image of a explorer window and an fake HTML form inside a DIV section.  While wary experienced users will catch on to what is going on, naive users are not likely to.

The idea of phishmarking is to introduce features to the UI that clearly distinguish the real UI from the fake UI.  Appearance of the feature should vary depending on on who (user), when (time), and possibly what (site).  Site dependent feature is a big topic so I'll discuss it in future posts.

When I came up with the idea of phishmarking, I was thinking about tigers, so I originally thought of using tigerprint-like patterns to be embossed into the background of UI components like toolbars and titlebars.  Other patterns will work just as well as long as the pattern is not a simple geometric shape and has some random elements to it.  I call these patterns phishmarks.

Note that phishmarks doesn't have to be present all the time on the UI as long as the phishmark appears briefly within the time frame that typically takes to be fooled by a fake UI.  In fact, I recommend brief display of animated (to draw attention) phishmark over static phishmark which could clutter up the UI.

A simple, easily implemented, form of phishmarking is changing UI colors.  But this technique is not as effective as using animated phishmarks as you can see for yourself in the following screenshot.  It's same as the screenshot above except I have changed the UI theme from default blue XP theme to silver XP theme.

In this example, the color change was not drastic enough to cancel the illusion created by the fake UI and the power of branding (logo, graphics, layout).  Making more drastic color changes is possible, but not without affecting aesthetics negatively.  More research is needed in this area to find the right balance between protection against phishing and aesthetics.

I have other ideas related to visual spoofing and visual security and will post them in the near future under the Secure UI series.  Stay tuned.

Linux is Secure 12/22/2004 01:52 AM
Security research suggests Linux has fewer flaws By Robert Lemos The Linux operating system has many times fewer bugs than typical commercial software, according to an upcoming report. The conclusion is the result of a four-year research project conducted by code-analysis company Coverity, which plans to release its report on Tuesday. The project found 985 bugs in the 5.7 million lines of code that make up the latest version of the Linux core operating system,…

Genx

Genx 01/22/2004 03:04 AM
It seems there’s some considerable demand for a C-callable API which will write XML safely and efficiently. I sketched out an interface design which you may peruse here; I think it’ll be pretty self-evident to the C-literate. It compiles and I wrote and tested the genxScanUTF8() method, so it’s not entirely vapor. Upon consideration, I think it will be virtually no extra work to make it emit Canonical XML, ready to be signed, sealed and delivered (and Rich Salz said he would help) so why not? Major thanks to Anthony J. Starks for the name—I am not a member of Gen X myself, but I do share a city with Coupland, so there you go. Since ongoing doesn’t have comments, I’ll post a pointer to this item over in the xml-dev mailing list, which is a natural place to discuss it. It would be very surprising if this first-cut sketch didn’t contain some stupid errors, so go get ’em.

Genx Alpha

Genx Alpha 02/17/2004 07:51 PM
I just posted a Genx tarball; the documentation is separately available here. This is Alpha code, not because it’s all that buggy (it doesn’t do that much, after all) but because it’ll quite likely change once some other smart people see the problems I haven’t. There are quite a few departures from the designs I posted earlier and where the ensuing discussion got to, simply because I’ve now written the code; and I’m never smart enough to understand the problem until I’ve written the code. For those who care about such things, discussion will probably be mostly on the XML-dev mailing list. Genx currently has an ultra-minimal copyright statement but I plan to adopt the latest rev of the Apache copyright before I do another release.

Child' s Play: Part II

"Donkey Kong is 'lame.' Tetris is boring.' Space Invaders 'needs a superbomb or something.' And why play Pong when it's more fun to 'jump up and down on one foot'? Hey, save your irate letters--we didn't say this stuff. The nostalgia-nuking commentary is from EGM's November 2003 issue, in which we had kids of the PlayStation generation playtest classic games from the '70s and '80s....

It was our most popular article ever. So we're doing it again, with a new batch of brittle truckers and a new bucket of classic games....

[Defender]
Bobby: I've played this on my cell phone.

EGM: [Pointing to the humans on the ground] What do they look like?

Parker: They look like those little characters in the game Life, the little people you have to stick in your car.

EGM: Before this came out in compilations, we used to put quarters in arcade machines.

Parker: You wasted quarters on this?

EGM: Yeah.

Parker: That's so sad....

Rachel: If I knew what any of these buttons meant, I might push them....

[Galaga]
Parker: Space Invaders...all these games are exactly the same--there's no real difference.

EGM: What does this game need to make it as good as Space Invaders?

Parker: Worse graphics." [1Up.com, via Gadg etopia]

The whole article is a scream, but it's depressing that you can play Defender in a Hallmark card now!
