LookSmart Buys Furl -- The Search
Stickiness Battles Are On
09/23/2004 03:21 AMWell, look at that. Just yesterday, we were pointing out how Ask
Jeeves was adding features to store and annotate the websites you like
and asked if
people
wouldn't just prefer to use an independent offering like Furl,
rather than be tied down to a specific search property. Whoops.
Forget we said that. Furl has just announced (no news sites have it
yet, but we're including the text of the email after the jump) that
they've been acquired by Looksmart, the also-ran paid-search,
paid-inclusion search engine provider. So, this is yet another search
provider trying to increase stickiness by letting users do more with
their search results. They're also offering five gigs of storage. If
you hadn't realized it yet, this space is getting more interesting
every day.

02/14/2004 09:15 AMFurl - Your Online Filing Cabinet for Useful Web
Pageshttp://www.furl.net/index.jsp
Furl is a new web browsing tool that lets you save and
organize thousands of useful web pages (you know, the ones you want to
save for future reference but then can never find again) in a personal
"web page filing cabinet". Once saved, you can effortlessly find any
page again later using a powerful full text search tool. With Furl you
can forget trying to save and organize dozens of bookmarks, forget
saving web pages to your desktop, in fact forget everything except how
to find a useful web page again next time you need it. I will be
adding this to my
eCurrent
Awareness 2004 Report.

Who owns my data? Furl vs. Gmail
Who owns my data? Furl vs. Gmail
09/23/2004 05:13 AMI received an email today from Furl founder Mike Giles, announcing
that he had sold Furl to Looksmart. John Battelle, ever quick off the
mark, posted that when he talked to Mike about it, Mike explained he
picked Looksmart because they wouldn't make him move to California,
and because they would allow him to keep developing the Furl service
in the way he wanted to. I liked Furl, although I haven't used it much
since I created a home-grown system for saving and indexing web pages
to create my personal version of the Internet Archive (more on that
later, if anyone is interested). Furl works well, and I haven't
noticed any appreciable downtime. I'm a little uncomfortable with
Looksmart, because they are one of the few remaining search companies
that mixes paid listings in with their search results. However, the
great thing about Furl, for which Mike Giles should be commended, is
that since very early on it provided functions to export the pages you
had saved, and Mike has constantly improved upon them. I've used the
functions several times in the past, and they work. After several
unpleasant experiences during the dotcom era, I swore never to use a
service that doesn't provide an easy way to get my data back onto my
local machine. That's one of the reasons Geodog's gmail account sits
unused -- while there are plenty of good hacks, there is no supported
method to export your email from Google's servers. I feel safe using
Furl, even after Looksmart bought them, knowing that no matter how
their policies change, I can get a copy of my data any day I want to.
If I wanted to, I could use cron and wget to make a backup daily.
Gmail users, what happens to your email if tomorrow Google mistakenly
decides you have violated their TOS and shuts down your account?
Google may at any time and for any reason terminate the Services,

event of termination, your account will be disabled and you may not be
granted access to your account or any files or other content contained

our system. With Yahoo you can spend $20 a year and buy POP3 access.
With Google, you are currently SOL. Think about it. I hope Google

What Is RSS-Blog-Furl High School
Missing?
03/06/2004 01:48 AMMorning at
RSS-Blog-Furl High School
"English teacher Tom McHale sets down his cup of coffee and boots
up the computer at his classroom desk. Its 6:50 in the morning.
After logging in, he opens up his personal page on the school
Intrablog. There, he does a quick scan of the New York Times front
page headlines and clicks through one of the links to read a story
about war reporting that he thinks his student journalists might be
interested in. With a quick click, Tom uses the 'Furl it' button on
his toolbar, adds a bit of annotation to the form that comes up, and
saves it in his Furl journalism folder which archives the page and
automatically sends the link and his note to display on his journalism
class portal for students to read when they log in. Next, he scans a
compiled list of summaries that link to work his students submitted to
their Weblogs the night before. With one particularly well done
response, he clicks through to the students personal site and
adds a positive comment to the assignment post. He also 'Furls' that
site, putting it in the Best Practices folder which will send it to
the class homepage as well for students to read and discuss, and to a
separate Weblog page he created to keep track of all of the best
examples of student work. Its 7:00...." [Weblogg-ed

Check out the full text of this amazing post by Will Richardson. In
it, he pulls together the beginning threads of integrating blogs, RSS,
and social bookmarking in an educational setting. It's a great vision,
one that I fully believe will eventually happen in one integrated
app.
However - and this is a big however - the only time the library
shows up in Will's post is when the teacher unsubscribes from the
library's feed! There's no mention of a topical feeds from the
library, use of library databases to support research or assignments,
no collaborative collection of web-based resources managed by the
library, or any other daily interaction with the library and its
resources. It's actually pretty sad when you think about it, but
unfortunately, it will be accurate if librarians don't start
understanding, using, and providing information to these types of
tools.
