Lots More People Shop Offline, Buy
Online
09/23/2004 03:21 AM

Last year, people ripped me to shreds for mentioning there were times that I would window shop in a store, but eventually buy online. Well, if that's as evil as people made it out to be, it appears I'm in some good company. A new study says that nearly 70% of people now admit to doing some offline browsing, before purchasing online. The thing is, to me, it's no different than comparison shopping offline. If I'm looking to buy something, I may visit a few stores offline before finding a reasonable deal. Sometimes, a store will immediately offer a good enough deal, or a level of convenience or additional value that it's worth buying right away -- and sometimes not. Sites online are just one more place to comparison shop. At the same time, the reverse is true as well in some cases. There are plenty of times I've researched products online before buying locally at a store. Either way, it's clear that most people now have no qualms looking for the deal that makes the most sense for them, whether it's on or offline -- and both sides need to learn to deal with that.

Shop Offline, Buy Online 12/08/2003 03:34 PM
It looks like the rest of the world is catching up with me. For years, now, my method for buying new books is to go into a bookstore and browse randomly until I found something interesting. I'd flip through the book a little and if it looked good, I'd jot down the name of the book. Later on, I'd look the book up online and see what sort of reviews it received, and then decide whether or not to buy it online. I did the same thing with the last car I bought - test driving at various dealers before making the final purchase online. For years, this was backwards of what most people did. They would research items online first, and then go buy at a shop. However, it appears that I'm not so much of an oddity any more. The latest study shows that many more people are resea rching in stores, but then going to the web to buy. I wonder if there will be a backlash against such in-store browsing. I recently heard about a shoe store that is telling people if they try on a shoe but don't buy it, the store will charge a $30 fee. They did this because people kept coming in and trying on shoes until they found ones that fit, and then went online to buy them instead. This seems a bit draconian, and unlikely to win many fans (or shoppers!), but it does suggest some of the tactics that brick-and-mortar shops may eventually adopt.

New Study Says People Not Afraid To Shop
Online

New Study Says People Not Afraid To Shop
Online
05/10/2004 01:30 PM
It was just last week (wasn't it?) that we had a study (paid for by a company that wanted to provide secure transaction software) saying that people were going to shop less online due to fear of fraud and scams like phishing (which have nothing to do with shopping online). This week, thanks to some research paid for by PayPal/eBay we have a study saying exactly the opposite. It turns out, according to this study, that the increase in stories about these scams means that shoppers are much more sophisticated and careful about buying online, but they're planning to buy more and many feel the internet is much safer for shopping these days. In other words, you can't trust either study as both are impossibly biased by the money that paid for them.

Congrats to Roland and Boris and.....

They've just launched Bryght - a Drupal hosting service. I hung out with these guys a bit when I was in Vancouver and they're certainly a compelling reason for moving there.

Vancouver is hot.

Here's Roland's post....

Our latest venture is Bryght, a hosted Drupal service, "the Salesforce.com of community content". I am working with Boris, Richard, Adrian and James on this one. Yes, we are all Bryght guys :-) !

We have taken Drupal and combined it with web hosting and email to give you a one stop shop for your community content. No IT required, no muss, no fuss! Check out The lights are on at Bryght for more background on how this started. And if you know of an individual, organization or company that could use a Bryght site, please contact us.

Whither StreamLine you might ask? StreamLine continues and it will continue to resell Blogware blogs because we still believe that Blogware is the best individual blogging platform.

Lots Of People Reporting Spammers Under
UK Law
12/15/2003 01:00 PM
Just ahead of the US's spamming law, the UK has had their spamming law go into effect. It has different problems than the US law, but most people still feel it will do little to stop spam. In the meantime, though, there was a bit of pent up demand, as the agency set up to deal with spam complaints was inundated with people reporting spam. Now comes the real test: what will they do about the complaints and will that do anything at all to stop spam?

bt800_rev.jpgFor the life of me, I can't figure out how to configure my phone to pair with my Bluetooth headset and still ring, which means I miss a lot of calls if I'm not paying attention. The (relatively) new Jabra BT800 headset has a built-in vibrate mode that would alleviate that problem, while giving me another: embarrassment. While the BT800 does feature an integrated LCD Caller ID read-out, it's also sort of huge, which makes my likelihood of wearing it anywhere outside of a tech convention pretty slim. If you don't mind the bulkiness, though, Mobileburn gives it high marks, with good battery life, excellent noise-cancelling features, and decent sound quality.

Lots Of Online Holiday Shopping... At
Work
12/24/2003 02:35 PM
There have been a ton of studies showing that lots of people did their holiday shopping online this year. However, the latest study has one other interesting factoid: the peak times for online shopping were during lunch times. In other words, people did their holiday online shopping at work during their lunch hour. Advertisers are beginning to notice this trend as well, and have been looking to buy targeted ads during the lunch time traffic rush. The article also mentions that some web filtering technologies for the workplace are now starting to wise up to the fact that some personal surfing from the office isn't such a bad idea, and will let employers "open up" access to shopping sites for some period of the day to keep them at their desk, rather than having them need to run out and do their shopping.

Radical Breeze released on Thursday Illuminati on 1.0, a utility that indexes and searches through the contents of any disc, whether it's located online or offline. The software allows you to avoid loading multiple CDs in your Mac when looking for a file; it can tell you which disc it's on once the contents have been added to its index. It can search based on file name, path, type, creator code or file size. Illumination 1.0 requires Mac OS X v10.3 and sells for US$19 on its own or as part of the Radical Breeze 7 Pack, which also features DiscBlaze, Macabinet, DoThisNow, RadicalPhoto, RadicalSqueeze and Zephyr.

Some People Still Won't Get Online

Some People Still Won't Get Online 12/29/2003 03:36 AM
While for many of us, the internet has become a central part of our lives, there are still many Americans who haven't bothered with the internet. In many cases, it is still a money issue. While it's getting cheaper all the time, for some it's still difficult to justify a computer purchase and a monthly ISP. For others, it's a fear issue. There are so many stories about all the bad stuff online that many are afraid to even try it out.
