No more dry mouth
02/01/2005 08:37 PMDavid Pescovitz:

Developed by
researchers at Israel's Assuta Medical Centers, the Saliwell Crown is
an electronic tooth implant that stimulates saliva production.
Diseases like AIDS, Parkinson's, and some antidepressants and
chemotherapy can cause brutal dry mouth that inhibits speech and
sleep. The device contains a wetness sensor, microchip, and electrodes
that zap the lingual nerve to trigger saliva production.

Doc Searls sees it as it is - in so far as Apple's role in our
industry is concerned. Anything that can facilitate the
development of personal publishing is fine by me.
This is the continuation of the journey started by macroMind when
we first started selling 'Creativity Tools' back in 1984.
Macwhirled.
Had an interesting day at Macworld yesterday. As expected, Apple
didn't provide wi-fi net connections during the keynote, but I had a
fun time hanging out in virtual space with other journalists there,
notably a crowd led by Adam Engst, who put up
a wi-fi LAN and facilitated group note taking, which he put up
somewhere (I'll find out later).
A sub-par Steve Jobs keynote for product announcements, I thought.
Not that it mattered. My main take-away was that Apple is doing a
great job of hacking the music industry, and is playing a significant
role (how intentionally it's not clear) in the mass market shift from
a consumer to a producer culture.
What will happen when all of us can be the first sources of music and movies as well as journals and books? A
bigger, freer and far more interesting marketplace, is what.

Last night, I've been thinking about Russell's
post on PSP in which he wrote:
So I snagged Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow this weekend via
BitTorrent and
then converted it to run on my PSP.
Actually, it wasn't that he snagged a major movie off BitTorrent
that had me thinking.
He wouldn't have been able to unless it wasn't a common albeit
illegal and shadowy activity.
What had me thinking was his response to the obvious questions:
I simply described an activity that many, many people are already
doing with or without
me. Do you really think that not talking about this sort of illegal
use of BitTorrent
is going to somehow protect it?
While my answer to his question is no, I do think talking in public
about illegal
activities does somehow cause changes, changes which the affected
or interested parties
(i.e. MPAA, FBI) may consider extremely harmful and thus proceed to
counter by setting
examples.
Based on my mutated theory of ying and yang, what belongs in
the shadow should
stay in the shadow. Failing to do so leads to chaos.

07/26/2004 03:50 PMWorld of Wonder has a
video clip of a man who makes little animals sculptures out of chewing
gum, using his mouth to mold them.
"He prefers to work with gum that is past the expiration
date. It takes him about three hours of chewing to get a piece of gum
the right consistency for art. Once he's done that, it takes him only
30 second to make a turtle, 20 seconds for a pig, and over a minute
for something complicated like a UFO. Unless he's out and about
handing the sculptures to unsuspecting kids, he submerges the tiny
artifacts in water to harden them. When he's really on his game he can
do as many as 20 an hour."

Of Mouth Marketing Conference?
So How Did You Find Out About The Word
Of Mouth Marketing Conference?
03/22/2005 05:03 PMFor the past decade or so, there's been a growing interest in the
concept of "word of mouth" or "viral" marketing -- where the idea is
to get people to tell others about it. This has been helped along
(greatly) by the rise of the internet. Since it's a communications
platform more than a content platform, it makes it quite easy for
people to tell others about something interesting or cool that they've
seen, even if it is advertising. So, it was only a matter of time
until some marketers
set up
a conference just for word of mouth marketing -- though, you have
to wonder exactly how they got the... er... word out. It will be
interesting to see how this technique evolves, because too many
marketers still seem to think that marketing is about
tricking
users into viewing an ad or buying a product. The whole point of
viral marketing isn't to trick people, but to make the advertising
interesting and engaging so that people
want to find out more
about your product. That's a very different mindset, and it's not
clear everyone has figured that out yet.

Hateful mouth and fingers that express
themselves so badly...
11/10/2003 11:06 PMSome of the things I'm thinking about at the moment - at work and
not at work - that I'm having real trouble articulating for some
reason but that maybe I can do something with if I set some of them
free:
- Collaborative online experiences for friends, small groups,
one-on-one interactions - going places to do things with friends,
co-browsing, co-experiencing, what it's like being at the cinema with
a friend, backgrounded/instinctual non-verbal communications,
presence-and-flocking, hello, Non-stranger-spaced, non-subject-focused
discussions, tiny
permeable-membrane reducers, three degrees;
- Routinely time-shifted media, ubiquities of recording and
collation technologies, "Death of live", time-based design and the end
of time-based content, programming in the middle of the night is as
important as during the middle of the day, navigating insane
scheduling information, worn paths, distribution technologies,
bittorrent;
- Simplicities of structures, metadatas, identifiers, organisational
principles, multi-use tags, clumpings, technological strata versus
social orders;
- Leaderships, relationships, political managements, social
engagement as game, rules of games, message-boards as prime structural
spaces to test political systems, American free-market reputation
economies, capturing ill-formed relationships, alpha behaviour,
dominance, leadership, leader-led vs. leader-less groups;
- Information in the air, tiny LCD screens, scrolling data printed
on milk-cartons, teddy bears that react to the weather, Ceefax,
smoke-alarms, application-updates through the radio...
Gah. I can't think properly. Too much stuff piling up unexpressed.
Too many things I'm not expressing properly. Too many opportunities
not to produce stuff of suitable quality and value.
