Not because I don't have any, but because I usually prefer to keep
political opinions to myself, until I can discuss it face to face with
someone. Yet, I'm going to publicly announce my standing on the Iraq
crisis.

More Evidence that Hatred of U.S. is due
to Overestimation?
01/07/2004 03:43 PMIn the Israel Essay,
under "Why do Muslims hate the United States?", the following
paragraphs seem relevant to this Argentina trip:
As with the preceding question we should step back and ask the more
general question "Why does everyone hate the United States?" Everyone
hates the U.S. because everything that goes wrong in the world today
is the fault of the U.S. Our military consists of 1.5 million highly
trained people and tens of thousands of machines capable of getting
them very quickly to where they are needed. Yet though we claim to be
interested in justice and human welfare we generally don't bother to
act to protect non-citizens. For example, impending genocide in Rwanda
elicited the following quote from then-President Bill Clinton: "... I
mention it only because there are a sizable number of Americans there
and it is a very tense situation. And I just want to assure the
families of those who are there that we are doing everything we
possibly can to be on top of the situation to take all the appropriate
steps to try to assure the safety of our citizens there." In other
words "We could use all of our airpower and troops to stop the Hutus
from killing the Tutsis but instead we're going to airlift American
citizens out and then move on to the next issue." An estimated 1
million people died.
Nobody is going to blame the Rwandan genocide on Ireland. They've
only got 17,000 troops and a limited number of ships and cargo planes.
Nobody is going to blame Denmark, with its 35,000 troops. But the U.S.
military is strong enough to intervene anywhere in the world. People
can blame, with some justification, anything that makes them unhappy
on the U.S.
Ask Joe Foreigner what upsets him most about the U.S. Top on the
list is the fact that the U.S. is too interventionist, swaggering
cowboy-like with military power into complex international situations.
Complaint #2, however, is that the U.S. failed to intervene in a
particular situation that is near and dear to Joe's heart. They hate
us because we are too interventionist... except when we're not
inventionist enough. They also hate the U.S. because they're so weak
and their government essentially serves at our government's pleasure.
Consider how annoying it is to be an American voter, knowing that
because you don't have $50 million you don't have any political power.
Imagine how much more annoyed you'd be if you were a citizen of one of
the European nations. Not only are your politicians corrupted by the
local rich but if your society wants to do something that is contrary
to a sufficiently important U.S. desire, the U.S. military might
invade and turn your country into a possession, ruled by a colonial
viceroy.
Joe Third World Foreigner has even more reason to hate the U.S.
than Joe European Foreigner. Most Third World governments have no
plausible claim to legitimacy. They have power because they seized
power and because the U.S. has chosen not to overthrow them. If Joe
Third World Foreigner hates his rulers, who are presumably skimming
whatever they can take out of his pocket, it is only natural for Joe
to hate the U.S. for enabling his rulers to remain in power.
In just a few days here I've encountered several Argentines who
aren't fans of the U.S. government. For starters, these folks
are angry because they blame their suffering under the military
dictatorship on the U.S., which trained some of their officers.
I asked if they really thought it was possible for the U.S. government
to control what happened half a world away. Indeed they
did. What about Castro? I asked. The U.S. has been trying
to get rid of him for 40 years and hasn't managed to do it.
True, an Argentine responded, but the U.S. has succeeded in making
Cuba ridiculously poor. Cuba, of course, is free to trade with
and accepts tourism from the entire European Union. So it
doesn't seem plausible to expect a U.S. trade embargo to cripple an
ambitious hard-working people. And most of the rest of the
Caribbean is extremely poor as well, despite not suffering from any
animosity from the U.S. government.
To an American this image of the U.S. government as omnipotent,
right down to the smallest details of how other countries are
administered seems odd. We live admidst evidence of our
government's impotence to achieve its goals. After 40 years of
the War on Poverty the streets are filled with homeless. After
20 years of Reagan's stepped-up War on Drugs it is as easy to party as
ever. The FAA tried to build itself a new air traffic control
computer system and the project went $billions over budget and more
than a decade beyond its original deadline. How could a
government this incompetent in its own country prevent a determined
group of foreigners from educating themselves, working hard, building
industries, and exporting their goods to Asia and the European
Union?

What Good Does Pointing Out Spyware Do?
What Good Does Pointing Out Spyware Do?
01/06/2004 01:11 PMWhat a strange world we live in these days, where companies are afraid
to actually deal with spyware/adware companies because they somehow
have the air of "legitimacy". It's your computer, and you should be
free to ditch any crap that has been installed without your knowledge
and explicit consent. However, as we've pointed out in the past,
companies like Dell have decided that, in order not to piss off these
so-called marketers (which is not the right term for them), they won't
help you
get
spyware off of your computer, even if that's what's causing it to
slow down. Now, Broadband Reports is pointing out that, for similar
reasons, big ISPs like Earthlink and AOL are offering
anti-spyware
products that don't actually remove the spyware. They just tell
you that you have spyware on your computer, and leave it up to you to
figure out how to remove it. It's certainly better than ignoring the
problem completely, but it really doesn't go that far. Of course,
they're probably trying to avoid
lawsuit
s from companies that are called spyware, but which insist they
are "legitimate" - despite the fact that there's plenty of evidence
most people don't install it on purpose.

America Pop
America Pop
10/28/2003 11:07 PMOne of my friends in college was a Japanese guy, here in the U.S.
getting his master's degree in "American Pop Culture". He had a
degree in marketing, and worked for a Japanese marketing agency,
and he was taking a break from his work to develop some expertise that
would help him more effectively target the American market.
Although we haven't kept in touch, the idea of someone pursuing a
graduate degree in pop culture always fascinated me, and I think
it made me pay a bit more attention to pop culture ever
since.
Last weekend, I was able to play amateur cultural anthropologist
and observe one particular class of pop-culture meme in action.
I was having lunch at the airport, and overheard a rather boisterous
self-identified geek relating a story to his friends, all of whom were
definitely not geeks. The story line was a familiar
one; "Once upon a time in the land of Unix, there was a
pure-hearted young man named Richard Stallman. The people of the
land toiled beneath the crushing weight of the Empire's brutal reign.
The community cried out for a savior to deliver them from oppression
and restore to them control of their own
destiny..." The person telling the story missed a few
points, exaggerated some others, and fumbled a bit by trying way too
hard to get his audience to laugh about the recursive nature of "GNU"
(they never got it); but at the end it was satisfying enough. We
all know the story.
In some ways, the basic plot is universal, and certainly you can
find the same story as far back as the Scottish legends of
the warriors who fought the Roman occupiers, or even the story of
Moses in the Bible. But I think the story plays better in
America than most other places. The names vary, but the story is
remarkably consistent in its ability to capture our hearts. The
key ingredients of the story are this:
- The empire is too big and powerful; you can never hope to control
it or reason with it head-on.
- The empire mindlessly serves its own desires, and you and
your community are collateral damage. You will go
extinct and the empire will not cry.
- Only through action can you hope to earn survival for yourself and
your people. You may never eliminate the empire entirely, but
you can heave off the yoke of opression from the neck of your own
people.
A very current example of this meme can be found in the story of Sherman
Austin, who began serving a one-year term in federal prison last
week. At the face, he's not much different than any other
college kid who styles himself as a revolutionary/hacker and gets into
trouble with the system. But when you follow the story he spins,
he could easily have some serious marketing appeal. He's sort of a
crossover between Mitnick and Mumia, and although I highly doubt that
he has the marketing clout of either the "Free Mumia" or
now-defunct "Free Mitnick" campaigns, you have to consider that
he is just starting out. One hopes, to be sure, that he reflects
while in prison and decides to become a quietly productive and settled
member of society. But I am very skeptical of this outcome.
The main proof comes from the comments he makes in every interview,
and his speech to the crowd at the Che Cafe benefit last month (in audio). He sounds the way that Bobby Seale
must have sounded, and he seems to be drawn to the mic. All bets
are that he is back at the mic the minute he gets out of prison, and
with his talent for attracting controversy he is sure to continue his
rise in notoriety. The anarchist community are undoubtedly
salivating over this guy the same way that the democrats are
currently salivating over Wesley Clark.
At the Che Cafe benefit, Zack De La Rocha recited "From a German War
Primer", by Bertolt Brecht. It's a very
well-crafted poem. If you're familiar with the Japanese Anime
"Cyborg
009", read the tail part of the poem and tell me if you think
there is a resemblance:
GENERAL, YOUR TANK IS A POWERFUL VEHICLE
It
smashes down forests and crushes a hundred men.
But it has one
defect:
It needs a driver.
General, your bomber is
powerful.
It flies faster than a storm and carries more than an
elephant.
But it has one defect:
It needs a
mechanic.
General, man is very useful.
He can fly and he can
kill.
But he has one defect:
He can
think.
~
Finally, since the topic is pop culture, I should point at this
story of a Bosnian
town who are erecting a statue of Bruce Lee. The story is
funny, profound, and even a bit sad. To be honest, I
get sick every time I tell someone I am from Mostar and they ask me
whether I am from the east or west side of the city (the city is
divided into the Bosniak east side and the Croat west side),
said Nino Raspudic. That is one of the reasons for building a
statue of Bruce Lee. We are hoping that someone in the future will
say: I knew Mostar. That is the city with the Bruce Lee statue.
If we succeed in that, then I can retire.
