Copyright Proposal Induces Worry
09/11/2004 05:36 AMU.S. copyright officials say legislators should amend the law so firms
that profit from others' infringement of copyright materials can be
held liable for their actions. Tech companies and digital-rights
activists say proposed changes go too far. By Katie Dean.

Articles for Educatorshttp://www.articlesforeduc
ators.com/Articles For Educators is a free resource
offered by Virtu Software. On this website, teachers will find lesson
plans, field trip ideas, tips and tricks for the classroom written by
educators. Visitors can browse the directory of articles by subject or
search for a specific topic. This section highlights Mathematics
lesson plans written by math teachers and is organized into the
following main sections: Competition, Fun with Numbers, and
Miscellaneous. Membership, which is free, provides educators access to
post articles, comment on other articles, or discuss subjects in the
community forum. The website does include a few advertisements, but
they do not overwhelm the website and its creator, a software
developer who is also active in Christian ministry, also includes
several Christian education links. This will be added to

Canadian Copyright Board allows
downloads, copyright levies
12/14/2003 12:27 PM
The
Copyright Board of Canada
issued a ruling on
" private
copying ", largely via peer-to-peer computing, with several
components. First, downloading is acceptable, but uploading is not
(presumably to target hyperpirates). Second, new mechanisms for
levies were described, freezing current ones, allowing new
charges.
the Copyright Board said uploading or distributing
copyrighted works online appeared to be prohibited under current
Canadian law.
However, the country's copyright law does allow making a copy for
personal use and does not address the source of that copy or whether
the original has to be an authorized or noninfringing version, the
board said.

Teaching educators about free software
Teaching educators about free software
12/17/2003 10:45 AMI was shocked when the middle school principal told me he could not
accept free software for his journalism program; that all he was
allowed to use was fresh-from-the-box commercial software. "It's
school district policy," he said. "We can't even bring software from
home now. It's because of the licensing. There are big fines for using
unlicensed software. We can't risk it." This was an educated man, a
fine teacher and administrator, but he knew nothing about the
licensing terms under which Linux, OpenOffice, and many other fine
programs are distributed. Neither, apparently, did his superiors in
the school district administration. We need to teach them.

Illinois Educators Conference Blog
03/14/2005 06:22 PMWhat in the World is IceCasting?
“IceCasting is an experiment in MobCasting, an idea that
Andy Carvin has been exploring lately. The Illinois Technology
Conference for Educators (IL-TCE) will be held in St. Charles from
March 1 through March 4 and I thought this might be an interesting way
to extend the learning.
Everyone loves attending conferences.
There's something about being surrounded by your colleagues and being
exposed to new ideas at every turn that really just gets people jazzed
up about technology, teaching, and education in general. This blog is
a way to capture that feeling and share it with other people. It's a
place to capture those ideas that you just can't wait to take back to
your school, or make you think differently about the way you're doing
things now.
If you experienced something at ICE and want to
share it with people, there's two ways that you can do so. Send an
email to teach42.icecasting@blogge
r.com, and the entire text of the email will be instantly posted
here. You can also attach photos to the emails if you'd like to! If
you'd like to leave an audio comment, simply call 1-661-716-BLOG
(2564), use 555-555-5555 for the login and then enter 2005 as your
pincode. Leave a message and your audio comment will be posted
directly to the blog!
So in between sessions, if you feel
inspired, pick up your cell phone and give the number a call. Share
what you've seen or heard that inspired you with everyone else. Please
feel free to pass this information on to anyone else attending the
conference.
If you happen to use Flickr, then tag your ICE photos with
ICE2005. I'll be adding a feed to the sidebar that will grab all of
our communal photos that way.” [IceCasting]
Steve Dembo seems to be doing
all of the heavy lifting at this point (text and audio),
but it’s certainly a great idea. Keep up the great work,
Steve!
To my great regret, I won’t be able to attend the
Computers in Libraries
conference this year, so I’m going to have to attend
via the blogs. Thank heavens for non-complex, navel-gazing conference
bloggers!

Robotic mating proposal
Robotic mating proposal
03/28/2005 01:17 PMXeni Jardin:
Jason Striegel wrote an
interesting post for Hackaday about a proposed sexual evolution
mechanism for robots. He tells Boing Boing:
Using Lego Mindstorms, you can create simple robots that have the
ability to mate (swap a simple software genome) and evolve (random
chance of single point mutations). Mutations that make a robot unfit
for traversing its environment or unable to mate will effectively
drive it toward extinction as it cannot pass on its genes.
It's a pretty interesting experiment, as you can watch novel behaviors
emerge with each generation. Even more interesting are the possible
applications for an evolution based robotic platform. Two things that
immediately come to mind are sex-based software upgrade mechanisms for
distributed machines and distributed robot cultures that can adapt as
a group to be optimized for communication in an environment, rather
than being explicitly programmed for the task.
Now, I couldn't find any
specific reference to fembots with
gun-boobies in Jason's post, but any excuse to post this jpeg's a good
one.
