Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AMCory Doctorow:
The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the
Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in
game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all
seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it
will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These
people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with
players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live
"actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially
commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty
slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other
than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an
Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game
so far.

Good Chip/Bad Chip
03/19/2005 02:23 AMMaking computer chips is not as easy as it sounds. Manufacturers
throw out 20–50% of the chips they make because of defects. According to a USC professor, Melvin Breuer, many
of these defects are so minor that the chips could still be used in
video cards and audio applications without a problem. He feels that if
the manufacturers could identify these chips, they could resell them
and drive the cost of electronic devices down to an amount in the
billions of dollars each year of savings.
The technique doesn't have to be limited to chips that are
consistent in their errors. Chips that make errors only once in a
while can also be spared, according to Breuer. They just need to end
up in devices where humans can tolerate a glitch in the output from
time to time. For instance, a video card could mark one pixel
in a million as red instead of blue and an end user probably wouldn't
even notice the difference. The same goes for a soundcard in a
voicemail application that blurs one word in every thousand. At
present, chips failing these tests are usually tossed.

Videogames Receives NASA Space Act
Agreement To Develop Space Station Game
05/31/2004 01:55 PMVision Videogames of Towson, Maryland received a Space Act Agreement
from The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) earlier
this month to develop their PC/PS2/Xbox game, Space Station:SIM, due
for consumer release this Christmas season. The Space Act Agreement is
a continuation of one received by GRS Games before Vision Videogames
management bought out the company in March 2004. It allows Vision
Videogames a flow of information from, and access to, NASA personnel
so the company can gather information to build their game. “The game
has captured everyone’s imagination. We have individuals and
international agencies including JAXA (The Japanese Space Agency)
volunteering to help us with drawings, science, music – anything you
can imagine,” says company president Bill Mueller. In Space
Station:SIM, the player assumes the roll of the Chief Administrator of
NASA, creating astronaut crewmembers with unique needs, abilities and
personalities while managing their activities and personal
relationships like “The SIMS®”. [PRWEB May 31, 2004]
