Tooth Tattoos at 99-Cent Only Store 09/22/2004 02:38 PM

Mark Frauenfelder: yukpacBilly Hayes sez: Mark, Thanks for the cool post on the 99 cent cartoons. I bought a whole grip of them this evening. While I was in the store my wife and I walked around looking at all the other stuff. I spoted some tooth tat 2's. I read the package but couldn't bring myself to buy them. I checked out the web site from the back of the pack but it timed out. I did however fid a site that sells the tat's. Crazy Stuff at the 99 cent store. Link

5 cent download store comes to life!

5 cent download store comes to life! 03/30/2005 08:30 PM

A week ago, I blogged about the 5 cent download. Soon after, I heard from Tryad, a virtual band that spans the ocean from Japan to Ohio. They decided to open their own 5 cent download store, and also offer the service to other artists for free (as long as the bandwidth costs remain manageable).

So, if you want to sell you Creative Commons licensed music, drop them a line. If you want to support artists who go CC, go buy some music. Let's build some good content, and hopefully, a good market.

Thanks Tryad for taking this idea and running with it.

American "Japgrish" tattoos

American "Japgrish" tattoos 04/09/2004 04:04 PM
It's all well and good to snigger at "Engrish" -- weird, random Englishoid phrases printed on Japanese garmets and packaging, but check this out: the Chicago Tribune went out and looked at the "Japanese" characters tattooed on five Chicagoans and had them translated, then compared the results with what the bearers thought their ink meant.
* What he thinks his tattoo says: "strength" and "courage."

* What it actually says: The left part of the symbol appears to say "dog," while the right part conveys something along the lines of "time moving into the past." Smushed together, the two symbols amount to gibberish.

dDrive: Bluetooth Tooth (Blue Optional) 08/13/2004 11:04 AM

blue_tooth.jpg imageAll Book of Revelation and Book of Orwell and such beside, does anybody really want to install a bit of electronics in their jaw that only has 512MB of memory, Bluetooth-enabled or otherwise? The dDrive is a concept from industrial design firm Creganna that would be designed to store medical records, security clearances, etc., and while I don't have a huge problem with that in and of itself, I don't think I'll be giving up one of my teeth just for something that's going to be obsolete in a year. At least not just for storage - get a Bluetooth-enabled cellphone headset in there and we'll talk about it.

apple_osaka.jpg imageImpress Watch took advantage of Apple's offer to members of the press for a sneak preview of the Shinsaibashi store (in Osaka, Japan), and brought back images that remind me of... the Apple store in the mall. Not that it's an entirely bad thing - the mall stores are pretty swanky.

While we're on the topic of things not being bad, Apple's market in Japan certainly isn't either. This two story, 500 square meter Osaka store is the second Apple store in the country. Though the first floor appears to be your common Apple store, a glass staircase will take you to the second floor that features a bar and 25-person seminar room. The store will open to the public on the 28th, so I'm expecting a bunch of people to bum rush the place and help Apple pay for that much square footage in downtown Osaka.

While we're on the subject of Apple stores, the company also announced a third Apple store in Japan at the press event: Nagoya, to open early next year.

Mark Frauenfelder: I'm stopping at my local 99-cent store today. As reported in Cartoon Brew:
99centtjRivaling Fleischer studios with their abstract rubber-hose animation style and hot jazz musical scores, the RKO Van Beuren Tom & Jerry cartoons (1931-1933) have become classics for their sheer surrealism. Currently in distribution at 99 Cents Only Stores is one of the greatest bargains I've ever seen: a dvd of nine Van Beuren TOM & JERRY cartoons! That's 11 cents per cartoon! And if that's not enough for you, it comes with a free 10 minute phone card inside the package!!
