Report:
"Rumsfeld and Rice Approved; Bush Knew"
Greetings. Seymour Hersh of The New Yorker, who exposed so many
aspects of the Iraqi prisoner abuse story, now reports that U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and national security
advisor Condoleezza Rice secretly approved the expansion of a
clandestine program that encouraged physical coercion, sexual
humiliation, and blackmail of Iraqi prisoners, setting the stage for
the abuses that these same officials have recently been condemning so
publicly.
According to the report, President Bush was kept informed regarding
this program. The Department of Defense called the accusations in the
story "outlandish, conspiratorial, and filled with error and anonymous
conjecture."
How accepted is this view in the US now?

The FDA has approved an over-the-counter home
defibrillator from Philips for use in emergancy (or kinky sexual)
situations.
When the shock is delivered within five
minutes of the sudden cardiac arrest, 50 percent of individuals
survive, said Deborah DiSanzo, vice president and general manager of
cardiac resuscitation at Philips Medical Systems, manufacturer of the
device.
Ambulances typically arrive within nine minutes of a 911 call. Ten
minutes after the sudden cardiac arrest, the patient has a 1 percent
chance of survival, she said
On the off chance you think you need one, though, be ready to pony
up a heart stopping amount of cash - around $2,000. And why do we even
have a Home Entertainment category? Is it just to tempt me on posts
like these?

Google approved PageRank stripping
05/11/2004 02:12 AMBlogger are now using the redirect-without-PageRank technique to protect their hosted blogs against comment spam
(also used by Moveable Type). At the risk
of sounding incredibly pleased with myself (which I am), that was my idea! Sweet.
Here's the real kicker: the URL redirector they are using is hosted on Google's
primary domain. This is great news for people like myself who are
running their own redirector, as the problem with having a redirect on
your site is that it can be abused to make it look like people are
visiting a specific site from a link on your domain: or even worse, to
trick people in to visiting an unpleasant link (see Slashdot comments, where links are
displayed along side the domain on which the "real" site is hosted).
Now I can point my own PageRank stripper at
http://www.google.com/url?sa=D&q=URL and let Google
handle the redirects for me. Lovely.
Peter van Dijck recently joined
the ranks of victims of wiki spam. Let's start rolling this technique
out on Wikis as well. The trade-off in lost PageRank for linked sites
is more than worth it.

Which listening patterns are
Radiohead-approved?
01/19/2004 01:55 PMPat, noting that Radiohead "believes their albums should be listened
to in their entirety and will not sell them online as singles,"
wonders:
# My CD player has a random feature. Am I allowed to listen to the
Radiohead album on random play?
# The inside of my car is quite noisy and I'm thinking it might
interfere with the "Radiohead experience." Can I listen to it in my
car?
# At home I have two small JBL speakers for my stereo, are these
"Radiohead approved?"
# What household activities am I allowed to do while I listen to the
new Radiohead album? I'm guessing that dusting would be okay, while
vacuuming would be right out...
...and so on.
