Microsoft releases VPN patch for SP2 09/22/2004 02:15 PM

The update to Windows XP is being updated to fix a flaw that affected virtual private network connections. Microsoft has announced it is to patch a patch -- it's fixed a hole in XP Service Pack 2. Microsoft has published the patch through its Web site. It fixes a problem that installing XP SP2 creates with VPNs and can be downloaded here.

Microsoft on Friday issued a hotfix aimed at distributed queries that may incorrectly use SQL Server startup account permissions when SQL Server 2000 is running in Fiber Mode. An open source and freeware software development web site has released a patch to fix the URL spoofing vulnerability in Internet Explorer, which can be exploited by scammers who try to trick people into revealing details of online banking accounts or other private information. Openwares.org, a Vaunatian company, with branches in Israel, the US and France, released the patch and the source code for the same a couple of days back. The company has also set up two pages where users can test to see if they are vulnerable to the exploit, one a fake Microsoft Update example and the other an example of a fake PayPal site.

Microsoft are planning to release 13 patches next week according to the companies security bulletin advance notification service.

The updates range from moderate to critical. 9 of the bulletins will affect Microsoft Windows and all 9 are critical. Other bulletins affect Microsoft SharePoint Service, Microsoft Office & Visual Studio, Microsoft .NET framework, Windows Media Player and the companies IM software; MSN Messenger.

The patches will be available on February 8 via the Microsoft Security website or WindowsUpdate. 13 patches in one month is among the biggest ever released.
