The skin is a large-area, flexible, rubber, pressure sensitive matrix with integrated organic field-effect transistors. The flexible and inexpensive technology can even be used to create sensitive robot hands and fingers. The research team has recently published a new paper (abstract only) which is summarize in today's Nature Science update. Additional photos of the prototype robot hand are available on the University of Tokyo website. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run. Hitachi today announced that
they have successfully developed the world's highest resolution
organic TFT (Thin Film Transistor) display. 80 x 80 dots in 1.4 inches
isn't exactly what I think of when I hear "high resolution," but
according to Hitachi, this is the highest thus far for a display of
this size. Perhaps the biggest advantage of organic TFTs, like
gymnasts or the tax code, is their flexibility. Electronic paper
enthusiasts or owners of cellular phones should be excited about
today's development, because a bendable display could mean a lot for
portability.
