08/12/2004 11:28 AMPolitical slogans come and go, but
CNN
reports that President Bush seems to be nailing the coffin shut
rather quickly on his latest stump speech refrain -- the notion that
America is "turning the corner." And who could blame him? With
disappointing job numbers out, escalating violence in Iraq and
widespread dissatisfaction among seniors with the Medicare
prescription-drug benefit, Bush's "turning the corner" rhetoric can be
turned around against him pretty easily.

Mayday Mystery. At the University of Arizona, a
series of
ads has been placed in the school's newspaper, the Arizona
Wildcat. These ads have shown up every year around May 1st for the
last 20 years or so, and seem to be cryptic puzzles relating to some
sort of secret counterculture organization. Bryan Hance, the former
webmaster of the Wildcat, noticed the ads, and has been trying to
track down what's been going on ever since. He is chronicling his
findings at

Turning thirty
Turning thirty
07/25/2004 07:45 AMKolibri has had a sudden anxiety attack over turning thirty.
I, having passed that mark long ago, realized that there is very
little I can say.
At some point you start to think of your life, and generally feel bad
or good about it.
Thirty is as good as age as any.
Our society attaches certain labels to certain ages, and thirty is one
of the ones where you are supposed to finally turn into a responsible
adult (in case you hadn't done it before). I don't believe the exact
age matters, but I think it is necessary for people to pause at
some point and reflect. It's even inevitable. It's a part of
growing up. So one should not feel too bad about it; in fact, one
should welcome these moments of self-reflection. They are good.
My life changed at 27, and realized I am not who I thought I was. It
took me a few years to get to grips with the fact that I am still,
even at 34, at a complete loss as how to I should lead my life. It's
like the more I learn, the less I know. And I guess that's how it
should be. People who are older than me, feel free to correct me.
All I can do is to rely on some things that I think I know now. But
I'm still "waddling through the swamp with leaking boots, in the
dark with no light, and having no clue where to go; just trying to
find firm ground; and not to drown."
Pushing and Turning
Pushing and Turning
05/19/2004 04:38 AM
For every startup, there comes a time when you stop looking around
and start pushing,
the long haul. Your goals are clear so you pour all your
resources into filling
and expanding the rank and start beating the marching drum.
At the executive
level, focus shifts from faces and dreams to numbers and
dollars. It's a time
of metamorphosis that turns a group of people into an engine of
profit.
If all the pushing goes well, swell. If not, there is no
point in keep pushing
in the same direction. But all to often, startups I worked
with over the years
continued to pump away until the money ran out. The smart
thing to do would
have been to 'turn' your product line toward a direction that will
give more easily
just as a wrestler might. Some VCs see 'turning' as
compromising of the original
business plan, a great poopoo. Hogwash.
If the landscape changes, the map must change as well.

Turning Clicks Into Calls
Turning Clicks Into Calls
06/08/2004 04:11 AMApparently, the next ads for search engines will
encourage consumers to call instead of click to buy
from advertisers in order to get ads from businesses that may not
have websites but definitely do phone orders. Without clicks, though,
the search engines have to find ways to be able to track the calls, so
special toll-free numbers may have to be used, or other ingenious ways
must be devised, in order to make sure the ads are effective. (the
second coming of fax, perhaps?) Too bad for dial-up users who don't
have a second line, but cell phones might be able to help out the
broadband-challenged to place a call instead of a click. And one
would imagine this could really take off if VoIP gets more popular.

xml?

I agree here.
While previous mistakes don't make a wrong a right, I think our whole
manual
lacks any consistent concept of what we really feel needs to happen
when and
where.
Anyways we have a bunch of messes that are a result of the long
period of
limited peer review, followed by a period of package inflation,
followed by
the today ruling confusion.
I think its time we fix our standards by starting from a clean
slate with a
PEAR2. There we can think about how to best deal with our developer
and
users base and how to great the best possible code in a PHP version
which
actually supports our needs for OOP.
PEAR1 should of course be maintained as we all have an interest to
keep that
code running and to use PEAR1 as a momentum towards a PEAR2 which
build on
the past experience.
<rant>
PEAR1 is now suffering from the fact that it focused from a long
period of
building technical foundations without planning the community growth
at the
same time. This has lead to numerous problems and is making us very
inefficient. Of course PEAR1 has a lot to offer, but I don't think we
are
scaling well and past mistakes seem to haunt us more and more, which
we
don't seem to be able to fix. So I think we need to recognize our past
which
we of course need to maintain to remain credible, but at the same time
we
should work to build a more scalable PEAR2 in which we can address our
issues on a clean slate.
</rant>
> Would you be so kind to point me to the pear group document or
public

There is no such decision I can remember.
As George pointed out we discussed this point in Amsterdam, however I
don't
remember that anyone decided on requiring documentation at first
commit.
However our decisions there were mostly only concepts and not
complete.
Anyways maybe someone should check when this was commited anyways.

Lukas Smith

E-Voting Turning a Corner
E-Voting Turning a Corner
06/17/2004 04:33 PMWhen a posse of computer scientists first raised dire warnings about
untrustworthy new voting machines in late 2002 and early 2003,
California's top voting official thought they were ``a bunch of nut
jobs.''
But Secretary of State
Kevin
Shelley came to understand the risks. And he's working to head
them off.
A flurry of news in recent days convinces me that, at least in
California, voters can have some measure of trust in the ballots
they'll be using in November and beyond. We're not in the clear yet,
partly due to astoundingly obtuse actions by some local officials, but
the progress is now visible and heartening.

Turning off your SSID is dumb
Turning off your SSID is dumb
12/10/2003 11:21 PMGood, short white-paper explains why turning off your WiFi access
point's SSID broadcast is not only bad for security, it's also bad for
performance.
Contrary to a common belief that the SSID is a WLAN security feature
and its exposure a security risk, the SSID is nothing more than a
wireless-space group label. It cannot be successfully hidden.
Attempts to hide it will not only fail, but will negatively impact
WLAN performance, and may result in additional exposure of the SSID
to passive scanning. The performance impact of this misguided effort
will be felt in multiple WLAN scenarios, including simple operations
like joining a WLAN, and in significantly longer roaming times.
