MarsEdit And NetNewsWire Icons

MarsEdit And NetNewsWire Icons 09/24/2004 08:27 PM
Here’s Bryan Bell on designing the MarsEdit And NetNewsWire icons. His post includes some versions of the app icons that I myself never saw.

Also see Jon Hicks on designing icons for NetNewsWire (including a hack I mentioned previously for switching to the all-Jon-Hicks set).

Intel, NetNewsWire, MarsEdit 06/17/2005 04:30 PM
For most Cocoa developers the Intel switch won’t be a big problem. For our apps it’s not quite as easy as just checking a checkbox, but it shouldn’t be very difficult, either.

NetNewsWire, for instance, is made up of a collection of components: several frameworks, bundles, and libraries. Each separate component will have to be Intel-ified before the main executable will run Intel-native.

I’m guessing that, in terms of work, it will be somewhat less work than, say, adding the Bloglines subscriptions feature was. Probably 5% as much work as the syncing feature. In other words, in terms of the amount of work I expect to do, it’s a relatively minor feature.

So of course we plan to make our apps universal; we plan to support PowerPC and Intel.

Not at all developers will have it as easy, of course. Cocoa developers using Xcode are likely to have the easiest time making universal binaries.

I’ve heard and read some fearful reactions about the Intel thing. Here’s the deal: the Mac developers I know are professionals. They’re not going to just do PowerPC only or Intel only.

One of the things about independent developers is that they often do a great job of supporting a range of systems. Consider this: Safari with RSS runs only on Tiger, but NetNewsWire still runs on Jaguar. This isn’t some special case, this is normal for independent developers.

You might say something like, “Oh, that’s just because Apple wants to sell operating systems and independent developers want to sell to everybody, even people who don’t upgrade.”

To that I’d say, “Yes! You’re right! We have a very strong incentive to support different systems.” It’s just plain good business sense.

And, at least for the majority of Cocoa developers, this support won’t be a big deal. We already do stuff like this. In fact, supporting older operating systems is probably quite a bit more difficult.

How to move NetNewsWire and MarsEdit to
a new OS

How to move NetNewsWire and MarsEdit to
a new OS
04/07/2005 03:40 PM
Once Tiger ships, a question we’ll get is how to move your NetNewsWire and MarsEdit prefs and data to a new OS.

Here’s what you need to copy over...

NetNewsWire:

1. Prefs: ~/Library/Preferences/com.ranchero.NetNewsWire.plist

2. Data: ~/Library/Application Support/NetNewsWire/

MarsEdit:

1. Prefs: ~/Library/Preferences/com.ranchero.MarsEdit.plist

2. Data: ~/Library/Application Support/MarsEdit/

That’s all. (Well, the applications too, of course.)

On inessential.com we posted answers to some frequently asked questions about the public betas of NetNewsWire< /a> and MarsEdit .

NetNewsWire and MarsEdit public betas

NetNewsWire 2.0 icon

NetNewsWire 2.0b3—full and Lite versions—are now in public beta.

Here’s what ’s new in 2.0 and here’s the download page.

If you bought (or will buy) any version of NetNewsWire 1.x, all NetNewsWire 2.x upgrades are free.

Here are a few screenshots of NetNewsWire 2.0: setting up a smart list, creati ng a new search engine subscription, using the new embedded tabbed browser, a collection of built-in styles, and the activity window.

MarsEdit 1.0 icon

MarsEdit, our new weblog editor, is also in public beta: it’s designed to make weblog writing like writing email.

If you bought (or will buy) any version of NetNewsWire 1.x, all MarsEdit 1.x upgrades are free too. In other words, if you already bought NetNewsWire, you own a license for MarsEdit.

Here’s a screen shot that shows both NetNewsWire and MarsEdit—the Post-to-weblog button has been clicked in NetNewsWire, and the post has opened in a new window in MarsEdit. (More screen shots appear on the MarsEdit home page.)

So, what’s the deal?

We get so many great feature requests, and we wanted to add a bunch of new features to NetNewsWire. But we realized there wasn’t really room to add features to the newsreader and the weblog editor both unless they were split into separate applications.

NetNewsWire’s new features including searching, flagged items, persistence, per-feed refresh settings, new icons by Bryan Bell and Jon Hicks, embedded browser, smart lists, search engine subscriptions, script subscriptions—and m ore. The weblog editor was removed completely.

MarsEdit screen shot

MarsEdit was more of a from-scratch application. We kept (but revised) some of the under-the-hood plumbing that was in NetNewsWire’s weblog editor, but then we completely re-designed the user interface to make it work more like email. There’s a main window that lists your weblog and recent posts, and you create and edit posts in separate windows—just like using an email program.

Another thing we wanted to do was make it possible to mix and match newsreaders and weblog editors. See the page on NetNewsWire and ex ternal weblog editors.

We also wanted to make it so NetNewsWire Lite users could have a Post-to-Weblog button—and now they do. When it comes to weblog editing, there is no difference between NetNewsWire and NetNewsWire Lite.

NetNewsWire + MarsEdit lines of code

NetNewsWire + MarsEdit lines of code 01/04/2005 05:58 PM
A little while ago folks were posting the number of lines of code of their apps as generated by SLOCcount. I’m just now getting around to it.

But first—here’s Fraser Speirs, Gus Mueller, and Michael McCracken.

I can’t tell you NetNewsWire and MarsEdit stats separately, since both apps share a number of frameworks that we’ve written. Here’s the stats on both apps together, including the frameworks they share:

Total Physical Source Lines of Code (SLOC) = 86,433
Development Effort Estimate, Person-Years (Person-Months) = 21.60 (259.25)
Schedule Estimate, Years (Months) = 1.72 (20.66)
Estimated Average Number of Developers (Effort/Schedule) = 12.55
Total Estimated Cost to Develop = $ 2,918,470

I think the main virtue of SLOCcount is that it’s an ego gratification tool for developers. “I did the work of twelve point five five people!” Etc.

A type of question we often get asked is “Where can I find more styles for NetNewsWire?” or “Where can I find more scripts for MarsEdit?”

To answer these questions, we set up some web pages—and feeds, of course—for NetNewsWire and MarsEdit. Each application has an All category that gets everything, or you can subscribe to one or more categories: tips, scripts, and so on.

Here is the NetNewsWire Resources page and here is MarsEdit Resources.

Since these feeds also have web pages, next time someone asks where they can find more styles for NetNewsWire, we’ll be able to point them here. (The web pages, as well as the feeds, are linked to from the above Resources pages.)

NetNewsWire special Atom beta 02/12/2004 02:15 PM
Yesterday Sheila posted on ranchero.com that it was NetNewsWire’s first birthday—and now today we have a small present for you.

But first, a note about birthdays: the first beta of NetNewsWire Lite appeared going on two years ago. So if it seems like you’ve been using NetNewsWire for more than a year, it’s probably because you have.

Anyway, today we’ve posted a special Atom beta for testing NetNewsWire’s Atom parser.

Atom support is part of NetNewsWire 1.1—but this build is not a build of 1.1, it’s really 1.0.8-plus-Atom. NetNewsWire 1.1 will have a bunch of new features, but this build is just for testing the Atom parser.
