TiVo and Netflix to Partner for
Downloadable Content?
09/06/2004 04:33 PMHey, guys. I'm sort of taking the day off from news - finishing up
some freelance and doing a lot of behind-the-scenes catch up for
Gizmodo - but this was just too interesting not to talk about.
Newsweek is reporting that TiVo and NetFlix are planning on releasing
a system that would allow subscribers of both services to download
movies and television programs directly to their TiVos over broadband.
There's no confirmation from the companies yet, but this could be
huge. If they could figure out a way to let us take TiVoToGo
onto mobile media devices, we could finally have an all-you-can-eat,
legal video download option.

One Step Closer
One Step Closer
03/11/2003 01:23 AMThe Outside Reading section there to your right has been updated to
use the latest version of my RSS
parser. It seems to be working fine, let me know if you notice any
problems.
If things go well I should have time tomorrow after work to right
some documentation for the new version, and then release it for
download. Some features:
- Fully Object-Oriented
- Supports parsing of RSS files stored on the server.
- Lets you export all parsed results to an external file, so the
parser doesn't have to get called everytime someone calls the page.
You could have a cron job call the parser every X amount of minutes to
reduce server load.
- Cleaning and easier outputting of parsed feeds.
- Designed with forward compatibility in mind (it will be easily
adaptable to take advantage of PHP 5's OOP improvements).
- Retrieve results in either an associate array or as an
object.
- Cleaner error checking. Also the error checking is much easier
to adapt to your own logging scheme, such as to a database.

One Step Closer To Teleportation
One Step Closer To Teleportation
06/17/2004 05:16 AMNearly three years ago, we wrote about
breakth
roughs in atomic entanglement that could lead to advancements in
quantum computing and teleportation. It seems that much of that
research has continued as two separate groups of researchers have now
used entanglement to
successfu
lly teleport the quantum state of an atom. As the article points
out, the fact that two separate research groups came up with similar
results (using slightly different methods) is particularly promising.
It is amusing, though, to note that just about every article
discussing atomic teleportation feels the need to explain that this is
nothing like Star Trek style teleportation.

One step closer to Podcasting
Proliferation!
One step closer to Podcasting
Proliferation!
01/03/2005 02:47 PMNo I am not talking as someone had suggested of my plan to take
over the world of podcasting, but about a new product that is trying
to find a investor to get it from prototype to production. The so
called iRoamer is basically a Internet Ready portable Radio.
My thought has always been that it will not be long before my car
stereo either comes with built in WiFi were I can push my Podcast to
the car from the house or carry a memory stick to the car when I walk
out the door.
My thoughts on the ultimate vision of Podcasting is that as you
download the shows you are subscribed to the software that does this
will automatically load it on your portable media device, your car in
the driveway, obviously your laptop and maybe even push it to your
computer at work. Hopefully the player software will be smart enough
to tag were you stopped listening and update that placeholder on other
devices your syncing to. [iRoamer]
One Step Closer To Wearable Displays
One Step Closer To Wearable Displays
05/07/2004 05:44 PMPeople have been talking about display technology embedded in a pair
of glasses for years, and it's looking like
they may not be that far away. Microdisplay
companies are doing good business building mini-screens for digital
cameras and mobile phones, but the idea of wearable heads-up displays
is where they expect the big money to come from. They're already
being used in military and medical environments, but they're moving
one step down the latter to industrial uses as well. From there, it's
not that much farther to go for more general purposes. Right now,
most of the heads-up displays are still bulky and ugly (though, not
nearly as bulky as they were a few years ago), but the companies
clearly realize where this is headed, and are working hard to make
glasses with embedded displays that are both functional and "cool"
looking. Combined with a phone or a personal mobile gateway device,
and you could have full internet access all the time. As someone in
the article points out, at that point, what we use internet access for
may change in completely unexpected ways.

Anti-Spyware Bill Gets One Step Closer
Anti-Spyware Bill Gets One Step Closer
06/17/2004 07:33 PMDespite
strong
lobbying efforts from a number of large tech companies, a House
panel has
approv
ed an anti-spyware bill that would require any software to clearly
tell the user that it includes traffic tracking components. It would
also prohibit keystroke logging, browser/computer hijacking and ads
that can't be closed. While this (of course) won't stop the
worst
spyware offenders who don't really care about the law, it should
slow down the proliferation of annoying and sneaky adware that's
almost as bad. It's still unclear which part of the law tech
companies are upset with at this point. It does seem to be clearly
written to only focus on
"bad"
spyware.

Closer Look at McCaw Moves
Closer Look at McCaw Moves
04/30/2004 07:18 PMSteve Stroh has taken a close look at Craig McCaw's recent purchases
in the broadband wireless space: McCaw bought Clearwire, a Texas
company that controlled some ITFS spectrum--ideal spectrum for
broadband wireless. But Stroh thinks that one of the most important
aspects of what McCaw is doing includes the purchase of gear maker
NextNet. NextNet was around during the last big interest in MMDS in
the mid-1990s and McCaw has been an investor in the company. NextNet
is part of the WiMax Forum and says it intends to build WiMax
equipment, but Stroh thinks that McCaw is likely to use NextNet's
proprietary gear to get a jump on the market. The first certified
WiMax gear from almost every vendor will operate in licensed bands in
international markets. One analyst recently told me that WiMax
equipment designed to operate in the U.S. probably won't appear until
late 2005 or possibly 2006. In the meantime, McCaw can use NextNet's
gear and beat potential competitors to the market. Also, with McCaw in
control of NextNet, he can make sure that the vendor is making the
gear he wants. As Stroh notes: "McCaw learned from Nextel that if your
service depends on the whims of your supplier, they can dictate things
that can materially affect the service." McCaw could migrate to WiMax
in the future in order to take advantage of potentially lower cost
equipment. But Stroh notes that in many cases the proprietary gear may
be better than the WiMax equipment. "WiMax is a compromise," he notes.
Even if the customer equipment from Clearwire is more expensive than
that of WiMax gear, McCaw will have a head start, Stroh says. The new
Clearwire Web site in part leads Stroh to think that McCaw is close to
officially introducing the new business. McCaw may be trying to keep
quite about his plans in an effort to try to buy additional ITFS or
other spectrum at good prices, Stroh says. Stroh says he dug up some
other juicy information that's available to subscribers of his
newsletter, Focus on Broadband Wireless Internet Access. [Editor's
note: When we point to a paid editorial resource, we like to be clear
whether or not we have a financial relationship with that resource. We
do not. We merely know that Stroh knows his stuff.]...

FCC Approves TiVoToGo
FCC Approves TiVoToGo
08/05/2004 08:45 AM
Although public policy isn't really our
niche, there are occasional bits of regulation that are notable for
the future products they herald, like the approval yesterday by the
FCC of a plan by TiVo to allow sharing of recorded content to up to 10
other users via a new service called TiVoToGo. The first
implementations will probably be local network -- sending to other
TiVos and PCs around your house -- but there's certainly the
possibility that sharing over the internet could be implemented, as
well.
Unless the approval gets shut down by the numerous groups
protesting the approval -- something not as likely as I at first
thought, as at least nine other DRM-encumbered sharing schemes were
approved in addition to TiVos, creating sort of an insta-lobby -- we
probably won't pay this too much mind until products using the
TiVoToGo service are implemented. But we thought you might at least
like to know it's coming.

AMD Alchemy Chip with TiVoToGo
01/04/2005 12:44 AM
AMD has announced a new chip called the 'Alchemy'
Au1200, designed to power portable video devices of all sizes. The hot
heat about the Alchemy is two-fold: first, it can resize almost any major format video into different resolutions on
the fly (upscale and downscale, it seems), meaning that devices that
use the chipset won't have to have video transcoded to its native
resolution before copying it over; also, the chip will power portable
video players that will be compatible with the just launched TiVoToGo service that
will allow you to copy recorded content from Series2 TiVos to portable
devices, such as the newly announced G
oVideo and FIC's
video players. (Thanks, Dimitri!)
