The Chord Project
http://www.pdos.lcs.mit.edu/ chord/

The Chord project aims to build scalable, robust distributed systems using peer-to-peer ideas. The basis for much of our work is the Chord distributed hash lookup primitive. Chord is completely decentralized and symmetric, and can find data using only log(N) messages, where N is the number of nodes in the system. Chord's lookup mechanism is provably robust in the face of frequent node failures and re-joins. One way that we use Chord is as the basis for the CFS (Cooperative File System) storage system. CFS allows anyone to publish and update their own file system, and provides read-only access to others. CFS distributes the load of serving data very widely to achieve high performance despite flash crowds. It also replicates all data, and maintains that replication as nodes fail and re-join the system. This has been added to Grid Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog.

Swift Boat Story a Sad Chord

Swift Boat Story a Sad Chord 08/27/2004 01:49 PM
That we are still fighting about the Vietnam War is sad. Watching an old political fight try to finish itself thirty years later in either the wreckage of the Kerry campaign or its triumph over the attempt to wreck-- that's sad. William B. Rood of the Chicago Tribune spoke out Sunday; he was a commander of a swift boat who had first hand knowledge. Rood thought it was sad that we're still fighting about this.

AP - These are troubled times. As geopolitical turmoil mounts across the globe, essentials such as homeland security hang in the balance. Gas prices spiral upward of $7 per gallon as the United States falls deeper out of favor with oil producing nations — and others. Reality or video game? It's a close call as Atari's "Act of War: Direct Action" ($50, rated T) strikes an extremely familiar chord.

content
09/22/2004 02:19 AM
Online music provider eMusic announced on Tuesday a relaunch of its Web site that features new editorial content and search tools. The service launched in 1998 and currently sells over 1,000,000 MP3 downloads per month, with more than 500,000 songs available in a wide variety of genres. Its new roster of editors and writers, who help guide users toward the type of music they like, was culled from well-known newspapers and magazines while such added features as "Tell a Friend" and "Neighbors" expand the site's browsing options with the ability to e-mail information about tracks to friends and the chance to create a profile and connect with others who share similar interests.

eMusic Relaunching, Still Offering MP3s
-- But Still Limiting Downloads
09/20/2004 04:56 AM
When eMusic was sold and ditch ed their unlimited download plan, we were afraid they'd also end up ditching MP3s and start offering some kind of copy-protected/crippled music. It looks like they still realize that would be a bad plan. The new owners are getting ready to relaunch the service, still offering MP3s. The focus is still mostly on independent bands, but they're also adding more reviews and written content to help "guide" users through the independent music world. While it's an interesting idea, one of the joys most people have in working through the world of independent music is discovering stuff on their own, or with the help of friends, rather than professional music reviewers. Instead of going with professionally written reviews, why not open it up and make it more participatory? Of course, with their plans that still limit the number of downloads you can make a month, it limits a subscriber's ability to sample new music anyway. So, while it's better than plenty of other offerings, it still seems to be a bit too limiting. The one good thing they've done, however, is to partner with a company that records live shows to put those up for download as well -- recognizing that people use file sharing apps not just for the studio versions of recordings, but also for live and bootleg recordings.

Debian: Where should
we
we should go from
here?
06/17/2005 06:46 PM
Debian sarge has finally been released -- now what? If you ask me (and you didn't, but I'm going to tell you anyway), Debian should have two overarching priorities for the next release: 1. putting a timed release cycle in place, so what happened with sarge never happens again; and 2. keeping the growing family of Debian derivatives united around a common core -- namely, Debian itself. What's at stake? If we don't do something about both of these problems, actual and potential, Debian will be irrelevant by the time etch is out.

Iraqi first strike before the American
first strike?
03/15/2003 04:09 AM
ABC news is reporting that the US is worried that Iraq may strike first before we can strike first. I don't wish any harm on the American troops overseas (or on the poor Iraqi soldiers either, for that matter), but the logic of the outrage about this escapes me. We are proclaiming our right to strike preemptively and unilaterally, where we see a threat that might appear in the future, and we are actively preparing to strike at Iraq. What logic allows us to be outraged if Iraq reacts to this threat by striking at the troops ringing her borders? Incidents like these are why the Europeans have concluded that Americans have gone off their rockers....
